Opioid, cocaine, and amphetamine use disorders are associated with higher30-day inpatient readmission rates in the United States.

Background: Patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) are more likely to experience serious health problems, high healthcare utilization, and premature death. However, little is known about the contribution of SUDs to medical 30-day readmission risk. We examined the association between SUDs and 30-day all cause readmission among non-pregnant adult in-patients in the US. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using 2010-2014 data from the Nationwide Readmissions Database. Our primary focus was on opioid use compared to stimulant use (cocaine and amphetamine) identified by ICD-9-CM diagn

Comparing the dynamic course of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine use over 10 years.

To examine dynamic changes in drug-use trajectories over time we analyzed episode types and predictors of quitting use over the 10 years following drug-use initiation for 1797 heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine (meth) users. Most episodes reflected high use and incarceration, however these events occurred more frequently among heroin and meth users. Quitting was predicted by current treatment and self-help participation among meth (RR 2.57, 1.79-3.70; 2.57, 1.80-3.67) and cocaine (RR 2.00, 1.42-2.81; 2.10, 1.63-2.72) users, and by a history of quitting for meth users (RR 1.11, 1.06-1.17). Personality, dopamine, and addiction: the DRD4 Ex3 (VNTR) polymorphism and personality traits in men addicted to gambling and amphetamine.

OBJECTIVES: The present study analyzed the polymorphism of the dopamine receptor gene DRD4, which is widely described in the literature as being associated with sensation seeking. Gambling disorder (GD) shares similar biological mechanisms and symptoms with substance use disorders (SUD). Therefore, a behavioral addiction group was selected for this study. During the research and recruitment process, it was revealed that all individuals undergoing treatment for gambling addiction were also addicted to amphetamine, which aligns with the biological mechanism related to brain neurotransmission. Bupropion in Comorbid Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) frequently occur together. Serotonergic agents are preferred medications to treat PTSD, while bupropion is reserved due to limited evidence. Ongoing studies suggest bupropion may be effective for treating methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). Investigators aimed to evaluate if bupropion would confer benefit to patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition diagnoses for PTSD and MUD compared to traditional pharmacotherapy. Methods: This report describes four patients with comorb

Neurologic manifestations of chronic methamphetamine abuse.

Methamphetamine abuse has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. The repetitive use of methamphetamine causes massive and sustained elevations in central monoamines. These elevations, particularly in dopamine, can cause changes in the function of the central nervous system that can manifest as a variety of neurologic disorders. This article focuses on these disorders, such as neurocognitive disorders and mental illness, including drug-induced psychosis; motor disorders, including the possible risk of Parkinson's disease, the development of choreoathetoid movements, and punding; and

Ecstasy-related deficits in the updating component of executive processes.

AIMS: Research shows that users of ecstasy (MDMA) exhibit deficits in executive processes. The updating component appears to be particularly susceptible. Less is known about the precise nature of such deficits. The present study sought to determine if ecstasy-related deficits in memory updating are related to serial position of items presented, or length of the list of items. METHOD: Seventy-three ecstasy/polydrug users and seventy-three non-ecstasy users completed tasks of verbal and spatial memory running memory, recalling the most recent items, in lists of varying and unknown length. Variable maternal stress in rats alters locomotor activity, social behavior, and recognition memory in the adult offspring.

Rats repeatedly exposed to variable prenatal stress (PNS) exhibit behavioral signs that are similar to those manifested in several neuropsychiatric disorders such as deficits in attention and inhibitory control, and impairments in memory-related task performance. The purpose of the study described here was to conduct a comprehensive battery of tests to further characterize the behavioral phenotype of PNS rats as well as to evaluate the sensitivity of the model to therapeutic interventions (i.e., to compounds previously shown to have therapeutic potential in neuropsychiatric disorders). The res

Changing Drug Consumption Patterns Among Clients Attending the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, Sydney: Implications for Service Provision and Harm Reduction Response.

INTRODUCTION: The Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney (Australia) provides a supervised space for people to inject pre-obtained drugs. We investigated injecting patterns among clients over time and the impact on overdose risk and client behaviours. METHODS: MSIC holds information on visit-specific drug injected, overdose, and sanctions for disruptive behaviour. Data for May 2001 to December 2024 were analysed. Where amphetamines or opioids were injected, the study record was marked accordingly. Data were aggregated to an annual visit summary and drug categorised int

Cognitive-behavioural treatment for amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS)-use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) refer to a group of synthetic stimulants including amphetamine, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) and related substances. ATS are highly addictive and prolonged use may result in a series of mental and physical symptoms including anxiety, confusion, insomnia, mood disturbances, cognitive impairments, paranoia, hallucinations and delusion.Currently there is no widely accepted treatment for ATS-use disorder. However, cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) is the first-choice treatment. The effectiveness of CBT for other substa

Crystal amphetamine smoking-induced acute eosinophilic pneumonia and diffuse alveolar damage: a case report and literature review.

Eosinophilic pneumonia (EP) is a disease characterized by prominent infiltration of lung structures by eosinophils. The lung interstitium is infiltrated by eosinophils, and essentially the alveolar spaces are filled with eosinophils and a fibrinous exudate, with conservation of the global architecture of the lung. Diagnosis of EP relies on pathological demonstration of alveolar eosinophilia along with characteristic clinical manifestations of nonproductive cough, dyspnea, chest pain and/or unique imaging features. EP may be categorized according to the origin: EP of undetermined origin may ove

Impact of dextroamphetamine substitution on the use of illicit amphetamines in adults with amphetamine dependence: a study protocol for the multicentre double blind randomised controlled trial ATLAS4Dependence.

INTRODUCTION: There is limited evidence on how to effectively treat individuals from marginalised populations with dependence on amphetamine and/or methamphetamine (collectively referred to hereafter as amphetamine dependence). The disease burden is extremely high in this population, especially related to psychiatric comorbidities, cardiovascular complications, injection-related infections and poor social functioning. ATLAS4Dependence is a multi-centre randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial that will investigate the effectiveness and safety of substitution treatment with dextroamph

Only susceptible rats exposed to a model of PTSD exhibit reactivity to trauma-related cues and other symptoms: an effect abolished by a single amphetamine injection.

The present study had two main goals. First, to investigate whether an animal model of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), single prolonged stress (SPS) leads to one of the main PTSD symptom: avoidance of trauma-related stimuli. Second, to investigate whether a single amphetamine injection delivered 30 days after SPS can reduce these symptoms. Olfactory and auditory cues were added to the SPS context and reactivity to these cues were tested more than one month later using an odor discrimination test, and freezing to the trauma-related tone. Other PTSD symptoms, such as anxiety (elevated plu

A review of positron emission tomography studies exploring the dopaminergic system in substance use with a focus on tobacco as a co-variate.

With the evolving sensitivity of positron emission tomography (PET) and the emergence of novel radiotracers, greater insight has been gained into the dopaminergic system as it relates to substance use. In this review, we summarize PET investigations from the last ten years that explore the dopaminergic system in tobacco, alcohol, stimulant, opiates, and cannabis addiction. In light of the prevalence of substance co-use, this review will also explore the effect of tobacco and other substance abuse co-morbidity on the dopaminergic system across study samples in the reviewed literature. Premorbid cannabis use is associated with more symptoms and poorer functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use disorder is associated with an earlier age at onset and a more severe outcome of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The role of cannabis use before the onset of illness (premorbid cannabis use) has not been fully investigated. We here examined how amount and type of premorbid cannabis use was associated with the later course of illness including current substance use, symptoms and level of functioning in schizophrenia spectrum disorder. METHOD: We used a naturalistic sample of patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia spectrum disorders with a comprehensive history of illness

Fatal outcome in drug addiction.

A sample of 524 young drug addicts consecutively treated at a special hospital ward has been followed by registers for an average of 10 years. A total of 62 were found to have died drug-related deaths at an average age of 28 years; 19 of them had committed suicide. Representativeness of the sample is investigated. Sex and choice of drugs were predictive factors behind fatal outcome: male opiate addicts died 5.4 times and male amphetamine abusers 2.5 times as often as expected. The males were exposed to greater risk than the females. Those who committed suicide had an hereditary disposition for

From opiates to methamphetamine: building new harm reduction responses in Jakarta, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rise of stimulant use, most harm reduction programs still focus on people who inject opioids, leaving many people who use methamphetamine (PWUM) underserviced. In Asia, especially, where methamphetamine prevalence has overtaken opioids prevalence, harm reduction programs assisting PWUM are rare. The few existing innovative practices focusing on methamphetamine use lie underreported. Understanding how these programs moved their focus from opiates to methamphetamine could help inspire new harm reduction responses. Hence, this paper analyzes a newly implemented outreach pr

Trends in injection drug use among pregnant women admitted into drug treatment: 1994-2006.

OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in the regional and demographic characteristics of injection drug use (IDU) during pregnancy. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), an administrative data set that captures admissions to federally funded treatment centers in the United States. Demographic and treatment-related measures were examined and compared between injection drug and noninjection drug admissions. The results were stratified by year of admission to assess trends over time. RESULTS: From 1994 to 2006, there were 239,511 admissions of pregnant women, of whom 3
