Paediatric amputation is one of the treatment options for various indications, namely, trauma, infection, tumour and congenital problems, and some may be born with congenital problems. It differs from adult amputation as they have higher physical demands, and special complications may arise. Stump overgrowth by far is the commonest complication in paediatric transosseous amputation, while varus deformity of the tibia stump was reported sparsely in the literature. The growth discrepancy of the proximal tibia and fibula physis coupled with distal tibiofibular synostosis may have resulted in prox

A patient with electrical injury to both upper extremities which necessitated amputation above the elbow on both sides is presented. Further débridement on the stumps resulted in extensive exposure of bone with little coverage by skin and granulation tissue. Adequate coverage and maintenance of the length of both stumps was possible with bilateral myocutaneous latissimus dorsi flaps. This enabled the patient to carry out various activities and to wear a prosthesis.

Of the possible levels of amputation, transtibial amputations result in functionally excellent outcomes. However, in contrast to hind foot amputations, such as Syme and especially Boyd amputation, acute or late complications related to the amputated stump are frequent with the various described techniques. The aim of this study was to describe a hind foot (including the calcaneum and fat pad) pedicled sensate flap with a surface that allowed full terminal weight-bearing in transtibial amputations in adults. One male patient, 66 years old with schizophrenia and chronic distal tibial osteomyelit

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of percutaneous revascularization of the profunda femoral artery (PFA) in patients with amputation stump ischemia who are at risk of hip disarticulation.
METHODS: We identified 4 patients who were treated for persistent amputation stump ischemia by PFA percutaneous revascularization over a 3-year period. All 4 patients had significant cardiopulmonary comorbidities and 2 patients had at least 3 previous groin surgeries. The short- and long-term outcomes of the patients were evaluated with regard to stump salvage, wound healing rate, complications, and

The graft on flap method, a useful option for the restoration of fresh fingertip amputation, was applied to the reconstruction of the short fingertip stumps resulting from the initial amputated stump plasties. As a modification, a nail bed graft from the big toe and a small cubic iliac bone graft were substituted for the lost tissues normally reduced as a composite graft in fresh cases. Upon follow-up ranging from 1 to 8 years, the grafted bone was found to have been resorpted in all cases. For the reconstruction of short fingertip stumps after the initial amputated stump plasties, acceptable

Preservation of the knee joint in a patient undergoing lower limb amputation for critical ischaemia is associated with improved postoperative rehabilitation and mobility. Yet, for most surgeons the below-knee to above-knee amputation ratio remains less than one. Poor wound healing and a high reamputation rate for below knee stumps are important factors mitigating against below-knee amputations. Many tests (Doppler indices, segmental pressures, skin blood flow, skin perfusion pressure, TcpO2, thermography) have been described to predict the likelihood of successful healing of an amputation stum

In Germany there are approximately 18,500 major amputations of the lower extremity each year, primarily transtibial or transfemoral. For successful rehabilitation, knowledge about the desired optimal stump condition and specific amputation techniques are essential. Biomechanical considerations regarding the amputation stump play a crucial role in the selection of the surgical technique as do the reasons for the amputation. Techniques such as myodesis, myoplasty or Gottschalk plastic surgery help to maintain muscle tension and optimize prosthesis control.

Most leg amputations are performed because of the effects of peripheral vascular disease. Only 50% of such amputations were performed below the knee in Ontario in 1972, although the knee joint should be preserved in most patients. Careful preoperative evaluation is essential. Postoperative problems include gas gangrene for which prophylactic measures are recommended; failure of the stump to heal, which necessitates early revision of the stump; and defects in stump contour, which necessitate late revision. An enthusiastic team approach to rehabilitation is necessary to overcome the physical and

OBJECTIVE: Treatment with transcutaneous osseointegrated prosthesis systems (TOPS) for short femoral amputation stumps aims to restore independent walking ability after proximal femoral amputation by direct bone-guided prosthesis anchorage. This cannot be safely achieved with conventional socket prostheses due to the mechanically inadequate socket contact surface.
INDICATIONS: Treatment of patients with short transfemoral stumps who cannot be mobilized sufficiently with conventional socket prostheses.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Known contraindications as with standard TOPS fittings.

The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy on prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with unilateral lower limb amputation. Narang's scale, the Locomotor Capabilities Index and the two-minute walk test were used to assess functional abilities of amputees on the admission and on discharge from hospital. We also kept records of some clinical parameters whose improvement enables better mobility of patients: thigh and lower leg girth, strength of amputation stump, existence of amputation stump contracture, existence of some other complications on amputatio

A painful neuroma in the amputation stump of a finger can be psychologically and physically disabling. Numerous surgical procedures have been attempted to prevent and treat amputation neuromas of the finger, but the results are inconsistent. Microsurgical transfer of the distal second toe to the amputated stump of the finger can provide a pathway and target for the regenerating axons and avoid recurrence of neuromas. In this article, we present the experience of successful treatment of amputation neuromas of an index finger with microsurgical distal toe transfer.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate the prevalence of stump infections after major amputations of the lower extremities. Patients rehospitalized in Hospital de Base of the Medicine School in São José do Rio Preto in the period from January 2005 to January 2007 due to stump infection after major amputations of lower extremities were evaluated in a retrospective study. All the patients underwent prophylactic antibiotic therapy at the time of the surgery. The Fisher exact test was utilized for statistical analysis with an alpha error of 5% (p-value < 0.05) being considered acceptable.A t

AIM: Ballistic injuries during the Great March of Return (GMR) protests in Gaza have resulted in young, civilian amputees. This article defines this unique population, their injuries and clinical variables that impacted on amputation.
METHOD: A multidisciplinary team (MDT) assessed 103 lower limb amputees (104 stumps). Individualized prescriptions of care were formulated and applied for both stump and prosthesis management. The cohort's health state was assessed at screening by applying the EQ-5D-L5 questionnaire. The EQ-5D-L5 will be repeated on completion of the prescription of care.

To evaluate reorganization in motor pathways following amputation, we studied motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to transcranial magnetic stimulation in 7 patients with unilateral upper limb amputations, a patient with congenital absence of a hand, and 10 normal subjects. Electromyographic recordings were made from biceps and deltoid muscles immediately proximal to the stump and the same contralateral muscles. Magnetic stimulation was delivered by a Cadwell MES-10 magnetic stimulator through a 'figure eight' magnetic coil over scalp positions separated by 1-2.5 cm. Maximal M responses were elicite

BACKGROUND: Primary amputation (stump closure) for diabetic foot sepsis is perceived to have a higher re-amputation rate due to stump sepsis. A guillotine amputation with elective stump closure is widely practised due to the lower risk of stump sepsis and re-amputation.
AIMS: To provide an epidemiological analysis of the spectrum of disease and outcomes of primary amputation for diabetic foot sepsis in a regional rural hospital.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 100 patients who underwent surgery for diabetic foot sepsis over a 5-year period was undertaken at Madadeni Provincial Hospita

When performing an amputation of the lower limb, the preservation of the knee joint is important to obtain an optimal functional outcome. Many reconstruction procedures are available to cover the amputation defect in order to preserve a sufficient length of the stump, so a prosthesis could be put in place with the best functional results. Local musculocutaneous flaps or free flaps are conventionally described with their advantages and disadvantages. In this report, we describe our experience with a transtibial amputation and stump covering using a fasciocutaneous flap based on tibial posterior
