Individual differences in responses to anger recall: The role of social inhibition.

The current study aimed to examine the role of social inhibition (SI) and its underlying facets (behavioral inhibition, interpersonal sensitivity, and social withdrawal) in explaining individual differences in anger-induced autonomic reactivity and recovery. The sample consisted of 218 undergraduate students (Mage = 20.3, SD = 2.8; 80 % women). Participants completed the 15-item Social Inhibition Questionnaire and participated in either the Anger Recall task (n = 143) or the Neutral Recall task (n = 75), while continuous blood pressure, electrodermal activity, and an electrocardiogram were rec

Anger regulation in patients with functional neurological disorder: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Functional neurological disorder (FND) has been associated with predisposing psychological factors, including dysregulation of anger-related processes. This paper provides a systematic review of the literature on anger regulation in FND. We evaluated anger-related research on patient self-report, observational, and laboratory based measures in FND. The review also addresses adverse childhood experiences and their relation with anger regulation, and the effects of therapies targeting anger regulation in FND. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO were searched for both quantitative

Childhood trauma and anger in adults with and without depressive and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is associated with severe sequelae, including stress-related mental health disorders that can perpetuate long into adulthood. A key mechanism in this relationship seems to be emotion regulation. We aimed to investigate (1) whether childhood trauma is associated with anger in adulthood, and, if so, (2) to explore which types of childhood trauma predominate in the prediction of anger in a cohort that included participants with and without current affective disorders. METHODS: In the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), childhood trauma was asses

Rumination in the Context of Anger and Sadness: Differential Effects on State Agitation.

BACKGROUND: Agitation is an important transdiagnostic factor for several mental health disorders and a significant risk factor for dangerous or maladaptive coping behaviors. How an individual responds to experiences of agitation itself may also play a crucial role in conferring risk towards maladaptive behaviors. Specifically, ruminating on high arousal emotions, such as anger, will also be more likely to initiate and maintain agitation, thereby increasing risk for impulsive and maladaptive behaviors. METHODS: Undergraduate students (N=117) were randomly assigned to an emotion induction condi

Anger, hostility and risk of stroke: a meta-analysis of cohort studies.

OBJECTIVE: A growing number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between anger and hostility and the risk of stroke, and their conclusions are not consistent. Accordingly, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between anger and hostility and the risk of stroke. METHODS: We searched the PubMed and Embase databases for cohort studies, focusing on the relationship between anger and hostility and risk of stroke. Then studies were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Study results were pooled using a random effects model. RESULTS: Ten studi

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anger and Aggression in a Child With Tourette's Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by vocal and motor tics. Children with TS often also exhibit disruptive behaviors including sudden anger outbursts accompanied by verbal and physical aggression. This case study presents cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment of anger and aggression in a 9-year-old girl with TS, co-occurring generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). At initial assessment, tics were well-managed and disruptive behavior concerns, including near-daily tantrums lasting 20 min to 1 hr, were primary

Aggression, anger and hostility: Evaluation of moral disengagement as a mediational process.

This study examines how the mechanisms underlying moral disengagement serve as a mediator between anger and hostility and physical and verbal aggression. The study was carried out on 424 participants (61.1% females), aged 15 to 25 years, assessing the direct and indirect effects of the distinct variables using a hierarchical multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling. The findings suggest that anger and hostility contribute independently and positively to physical and verbal aggression. Moreover, the relationships between anger, hostility, and aggression appear to be mediate

Anger Traits Associated With Cardiovascular Risk Biomarkers in the Metabolic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that different personality traits contribute to mortality in different subtypes of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Anger traits have been shown to promote the constellation of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), which in turn increases CVD risks. OBJECTIVE: To determine covariation of anger traits with CVD biomarkers, we examined patients (N = 101; 34 men and 67 women; age, 45.6 ± 13.96 years) in a nationally sampled treatment cohort for MetS in the Ukrainian governmental healthcare system. METHODS: Data collection was conducted in 2007. Laboratory data of sing

A cohort study of the relationship between anger and chronic spontaneous urticaria.

INTRODUCTION: Anger plays a major role in psychodermatological diseases. Researchers have reported that anger and other psychological factors play a role in the etiology of chronic urticaria. This study aimed to examine symptoms of anger, anger-related behavioral patterns, thoughts associated with anger, situations that cause anger and experiences of interpersonal anger in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU). The authors hypothesized that patients with CSU react to more situations with anger and experience more anger symptoms as compared to alopecia areata (AA) patients and healt

The mediating role of anger in the relationship between PTSD symptoms and impulsivity.

Research indicates a significant relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anger (Olatunji, Ciesielski, & Tolin, 2010; Orth & Wieland, 2006). Individuals may seek urgent coping to deal with the distress of anger, which is a mobilizing and action-oriented emotion (Novaco & Chemtob, 2002); possibly in the form of impulsive actions consistent with impulsivity's association with anger (Milligan & Waller, 2001; Whiteside & Lynam, 2001). This could be 1 of the explanations for the relationship between PTSD and impulsivity (Kotler, Julian, Efront, & Amir, 2001; Ledgerwood & Petry,

Breastfeeding experience differentially impacts recognition of happiness and anger in mothers.

Breastfeeding is a dynamic biological and social process based on hormonal regulation involving oxytocin. While there is much work on the role of breastfeeding in infant development and on the role of oxytocin in socio-emotional functioning in adults, little is known about how breastfeeding impacts emotion perception during motherhood. We therefore examined whether breastfeeding influences emotion recognition in mothers. Using a dynamic emotion recognition task, we found that longer durations of exclusive breastfeeding were associated with faster recognition of happiness, providing evidence fo

Anger and hostility from the perspective of the Big Five personality model.

This study was aimed at examining the relationships of the personality dimensions of the five-factor model or Big Five with trait anger and with two specific traits of hostility (mistrust and confrontational attitude), and identifying the similarities and differences between trait anger and hostility in the framework of the Big Five. In a sample of 353 male and female adults, the Big Five explained a significant percentage of individual differences in trait anger and hostility after controlling the effects due to the relationship between both constructs and content overlapping across scales. Hostility and anger in: cardiovascular reactivity and recovery to mental arithmetic stress.

BACKGROUND: Hostility and anger have been attributed as psychosocial risk factors for coronary heart disease. Heightened cardiovascular reactivity (CVR), and poor recovery, to provocative stressors are thought to hasten this risk. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between hostility and anger inhibition (AI), and the moderating situational influences of harassment and evaluation, in predicting CVR and recovery to mental arithmetic (MA) stress using a multiple regression approach. METHODS: 48 male undergraduate students engaged in the following 3 minute tasks during recording of the electro

Randomized control trial of an integrated therapy for comorbid anger and gambling.

This study evaluated an integrated treatment for comorbid problem gambling, anger, and substance use. Problem gamblers with comorbid anger problems (N=42), half of whom also had substance use disorders, were randomized to either a 14-week integrated treatment targeting anger and addictions (i.e., both gambling and substance use) or a specialized treatment-as-usual (TAU) for gambling and substance use. Participants were assessed at baseline (Tl), 14 weeks (T2), and 12 weeks follow-up (T3). Relative to the TAU, participants in the integrated anger and addictions treatment reported significantly

Rumination on anger and sadness in adolescence: fueling of fury and deepening of despair.

We examined anger rumination and sadness rumination in clinic-referred adolescents (N = 121). Factor analysis indicated that items from analogous anger and sadness rumination measures loaded onto 2 factors tapping anger rumination and sadness rumination, respectively. Structural equation modeling confirmed unique relations between each form of rumination and specific emotional or behavioral problems. Anger and anger rumination were independent predictors of aggression, suggesting that both the affective component of anger (i.e., angry feelings) and the cognitive process (i.e., recurrent though
