Species-specific sensitivity to in vitro inhibition of the thyroperoxidase (TPO) enzyme by environmental pollutants for five fishes.

Chemicals released into aquatic environments are detected in surface waters globally, and some can disrupt thyroid hormone (TH) signaling in fishes. A key protein in this pathway is thyroperoxidase (TPO), which catalyzes synthesis of THs. Inhibition of TPO is associated with decreased THs, leading to a variety of adverse outcomes. However, there is uncertainty regarding species-specific sensitivities to inhibition of TPO among fishes and whether inhibitors in mammals share that activity in fishes. Therefore, the present study applied the Amplex UltraRed TPO assay to compare in vitro sensitivit

Tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive cell groups in the brain of the teleost fish Gnathonemus petersii.

Different antibodies against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) were used to obtain detailed information about the distribution, morphology and chemical differentiation of catecholaminergic neurons in the highly differentiated brain of the electric mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersii. The results show that the distribution of catecholaminergic neurons is much more widespread than was previously thought on the basis of dopamine and noradrenaline immunohistochemistry. Tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive neurons were observed not only in clearly dopaminergic regions (the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the magnoc

An Integrative Homeopathic Approach in the Management of Class II Mesangial Lupus Nephritis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with frequent renal involvement that significantly influences disease prognosis. Class II mesangial lupus nephritis represents an early histopathological stage and may present with persistent proteinuria and recurrent disease flares. Conventional long-term management often requires prolonged corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy, which may lead to adverse effects and therapeutic dependency. CASE SUMMARY: A 20-year-old male with SLE and biopsy-proven Class II mesangial lupus nephritis presented with recurren

Broodstock management and hormonal manipulations of fish reproduction.

Control of reproductive function in captivity is essential for the sustainability of commercial aquaculture production, and in many fishes it can be achieved by manipulating photoperiod, water temperature or spawning substrate. The fish reproductive cycle is separated in the growth (gametogenesis) and maturation phase (oocyte maturation and spermiation), both controlled by the reproductive hormones of the brain, pituitary and gonad. Although the growth phase of reproductive development is concluded in captivity in most fishes-the major exemption being the freshwater eel (Anguilla spp.), oocyte

Molecular identification and genetic diversity of Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae in freshwater fishes in southern Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

Gnathostomiasis, an emerging food-borne parasitic zoonosis in Asia, is mainly caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae). Consumption of raw meat or freshwater fishes in endemic areas is the major risk factor. Throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar, freshwater fish are often consumed raw or undercooked. The risk of this practice for gnathostomiasis infection in Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Myanmar has never been evaluated. Here, we identified larvae of Gnathostoma species contaminating freshwater fishes sold at local markets in these three co

Neuropeptide Y and peptide YY immunoreactivities in the pancreas of various vertebrates.

NPY-like immunoreactivity was observed in nerve fibers and endocrine cells in pancreas of all species examined except the eel, which showed no NPY innervation. The density of NPY-positive nerve fibers was higher in mammals than in the lower vertebrates. These nerve fibers were distributed throughout the parenchyma, and were particularly associated with the pancreatic duct and vascular walls. In addition, the density of NPY-positive endocrine cells was found to be higher in lower vertebrates than mammals; in descending order: eel = turtle = chicken > bullfrog > mouse = rat = human > guinea pig

Evidence for the participation of a melanin-concentrating hormone in physiological colour change in the eel.

The hormonal and nervous control of colour change in the eel has been investigated. The only bioactive forms of MSH found in eel pituitary extracts or secreted by eel pituitary cultures were forms of alpha-MSH; no beta-MSH was detected. After transfer of eels from a black to a white background, the melanin concentration in skin melanophores was accompanied by a rapid decline in plasma alpha-MSH titres. Hypophysectomy resulted in melanin concentration, and pituitary extracts injected into hypophysectomized eels caused melanin dispersion. This effect was eliminated if the pituitary extracts were

Expression and localization in the fish retina of a homologue of the Alzheimer's related PS1 gene.

Early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (early-onset FAD) has been linked with mutations in the presenilin gene, PS1. Mutations in PS1 may affect the processing/trafficking of b-amyloid precursor-protein (bAPP) and favour the production of toxic amyloid-b fragments that are associated with neural degeneration. This study reports the expression of a PS1-like cDNA in the carp (Cyprinus carpio) retina (the encoded protein shows 76% identity to the human PS1 protein). Carp PS1 mRNA was localized by in situ hybridization to the photoreceptor cell, inner nuclear and ganglion cell layers. Expression

Contaminants in tropical island streams and their biota.

Environmental contamination is problematic for tropical islands due to their typically dense human populations and competing land and water uses. The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico (USA) has a long history of anthropogenic chemical use, and its human population density is among the highest globally, providing a model environment to study contaminant impacts on tropical island stream ecosystems. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, historic-use chlorinated pesticides, current-use pesticides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), and metals (mercury, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, zinc, and selenium)

Post- and pre-synaptic action of isotocin in the upper esophageal sphincter muscle of the eel: its role in water drinking.

Isotocin is a fish analogue of the mammalian hormone oxytocin. To elucidate sites of action of isotocin (IT) in the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) muscle, a key muscle in swallowing, IT was applied after treatment with tetrodotoxin (TTX). Even after blocking nerve activity with TTX, IT relaxes the UES muscle in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting that IT receptor(s) is present on the muscle cells. Similar relaxation was also obtained by application of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), forskolin (FSK) and 8-bromo-adenosine, 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (8BrcAMP) after pretreatment wi

The 3' ends of tRNA-derived short interspersed repetitive elements are derived from the 3' ends of long interspersed repetitive elements.

Short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs) are a type of retroposon, being members of a class of informational molecules that are amplified via cDNA intermediates and flow back into the host genome. In contrast to retroviruses and retrotransposons, SINEs do not encode the enzymes required for their amplification, such as reverse transcriptases, so they are presumed to borrow these enzymes from other sources. In the present study, we isolated a family of long interspersed repetitive elements (LINEs) from the turtle genome. The sequence of this family was found to be very similar to those of

Potential interactions between diadromous fishes of U.K. conservation importance and the electromagnetic fields and subsea noise from marine renewable energy developments.

The considerable extent of construction and operation of marine renewable energy developments (MRED) within U.K. and adjacent waters will lead, among other things, to the emission of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and subsea sounds into the marine environment. Migratory fishes that respond to natural environmental cues, such as the Earth's geomagnetic field or underwater sounds, move through the same waters that the MRED occupy, thereby raising the question of whether there are any effects of MRED on migratory fishes. Diadromous species, such as the Salmonidae and Anguillidae, which undertake la

Hosts and parasites as aliens.

Over the past decades, various free-living animals (hosts) and their parasites have invaded recipient areas in which they had not previously occurred, thus gaining the status of aliens or exotics. In general this happened to a low extent for hundreds of years. With variable frequency, invasions have been followed by the dispersal and establishment of non-indigenous species, whether host or parasite. In the literature thus far, colonizations by both hosts and parasites have not been treated and reviewed together, although both are usually interwoven in various ways. As to those factors permitti

New butterfly taxa and findings from genomic analyses.

Continuing our genomics-driven exploration of butterfly taxonomy, we integrate phylogenetic trees from all protein-coding genes with existing taxonomic and phenotypic knowledge and uncover further insights into butterfly systematics. As a result, one subgenus, 44 species, and 11 subspecies are proposed as new (type species in original combinations or type localities are listed in parentheses): Porphaurea Grishin, subgen. n. (Phoenicops porphyropis Meyrick & Lower, 1902) of Chaetocneme C. Felder, 1860 in Hesperiidae Latreille, 1809; Dione (Agraulis) lamasi Grishin, sp. n. (Peru: Cuzco) in Nymph

Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for 315 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (HALE), 1990-2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015.

BACKGROUND: Healthy life expectancy (HALE) and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) provide summary measures of health across geographies and time that can inform assessments of epidemiological patterns and health system performance, help to prioritise investments in research and development, and monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We aimed to provide updated HALE and DALYs for geographies worldwide and evaluate how disease burden changes with development. METHODS: We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 20

BACKGROUND: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), a composite measure of disease burden capturing both premature mortality and prevalence and severity of ill

Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk-outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk-outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk-outcome associations. METHODS: We used the CRA framework developed for previous iterations of GBD to estimate levels and trends in exposure, attributable deaths, and
