Stress and stability: applying the Anna Karenina principle to animal microbiomes.

All animals studied to date are associated with symbiotic communities of microorganisms. These animal microbiotas often play important roles in normal physiological function and susceptibility to disease; predicting their responses to perturbation represents an essential challenge for microbiology. Most studies of microbiome dynamics test for patterns in which perturbation shifts animal microbiomes from a healthy to a dysbiotic stable state. Here, we consider a complementary alternative: that the microbiological changes induced by many perturbations are stochastic, and therefore lead to transi

Investigations on the biology, epidemiology, pathology, and control of Tunga penetrans in Brazil: VII. The importance of animal reservoirs for human infestation.

In Brazil tungiasis is endemic in many resource-poor communities, where various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs for this zoonosis. To determine the role of animal reservoirs in human tungiasis, a cross-sectional study was performed in a traditional fishing community in northeast Brazil. The human and the animal populations were examined for the presence of embedded sand fleas and the prevalence and the intensity of infestation were correlated. The overall prevalence of tungiasis in humans was 39% (95% CI 34-43%). Of six mammal species present in the village, only cats and dogs

"We Were on Our Own": Animal Slaughtering and Processing Industry Workers' Perspectives on Workplace Health and Safety During the COVID-19 Pandemic in North Carolina.

Workers in the animal slaughtering and processing industry have been disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our mixed methods study aimed to describe worker experiences during the pandemic, focusing on workplace health and safety. We surveyed 69 animal slaughtering and processing workers in North Carolina between April 2021 and July 2022 and conducted in-depth interviews with 9 workers between July 2022 and April 2023. Nearly all survey participants reported their employers provided (94%) and required (90%) face masks, but fewer reported engineering or administrative controls. I

Attitudes of pet owners in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, towards pet ownership and access to care.

Free-roaming dogs pose risks to human, animal, and environmental health, through zoonotic disease transmission, contribution to parasite life cycles, and predation on vulnerable species. Sterilization campaigns are a common method to reduce free-roaming dog populations. A questionnaire was developed to assess the attitudes and practices of dog owners in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico, regarding pet ownership and access to veterinary care. The primary reasons for owning dogs were companionship and protection, and the most common barriers to care reported were cost and access. The professionalism, knowl

Exploring Host-Commensal Interactions in the Respiratory Tract.

Commensal microbes are currently in the limelight in biomedical research because they play an important role in health and disease. Humans harbor an enormous diversity of commensals in various parts of the body, including the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Advancement in metagenomic and other omic approaches, and development of suitable animal models have provided an unprecedented appreciation into the diversity of commensals, and the intricacies of their intimate communication with the host immune system. Most studies have focused on the host-commensal interaction in the gut, while

Exploring animal food microbiomes and resistomes via 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics.

As a diverse and complex food matrix, the animal food microbiota and repertoire of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes remain to be better understood. In this study, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and shotgun metagenomics were applied to three types of animal food samples (cattle feed, dry dog food, and poultry feed). ZymoBIOMICS mock microbial community was used for workflow optimization including DNA extraction kits and bead-beating conditions. The four DNA extraction kits (AllPrep PowerViral DNA/RNA Kit, DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kit, DNeasy PowerSoil Kit, and ZymoBIOMICS DNA Miniprep Kit)

The Challenge of Lyme Borreliosis: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices in France.

Lyme borreliosis (LB), a zoonotic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and transmitted by Ixodes ricinus, is increasingly relevant in France, yet data on public awareness and prevention are limited. This cross-sectional study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of companion-animal owners (CAOs) and veterinarians regarding LB. Online questionnaires were distributed between January and April 2023, yielding 159 valid CAO responses and 48 responses from veterinarians. Among owners, 95% reported outdoor access for their pets, 73.9% had observed ticks, and 88.8% used

Breaking the silence: brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for communication and motor control.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) allow control of computers or external devices with regulation of brain activity alone. Invasive BCIs, almost exclusively investigated in animal models using implanted electrodes in brain tissue, and noninvasive BCIs using electrophysiological recordings in humans are described. Clinical applications were reserved with few exceptions for the noninvasive approach: communication with the completely paralyzed and locked-in syndrome with slow cortical potentials, sensorimotor rhythm and P300, and restoration of movement and cortical reorganization in high spinal cor

Community-based symptom reporting among agro-pastoralists and their livestock in Chad in a One Health approach.

One Health Syndromic Surveillance has a high potential for detecting early epidemiological events in remote and hard-to-reach populations. Chadian pastoralists living close to their animals and being socio-economically unprivileged have an increased risk for zoonosis exposure. Engaging communities in disease surveillance could also strengthen preparedness capacities for outbreaks in rural Chad. This study describes a retrospective cross-sectional survey that collected data on clinical symptoms reported in people and livestock in Chadian agro-pastoral communities. In January-February 2018, inte

A rather dry subject; investigating the study of arid-associated microbial communities.

Almost one third of Earth's land surface is arid, with deserts alone covering more than 46 million square kilometres. Nearly 2.1 billion people inhabit deserts or drylands and these regions are also home to a great diversity of plant and animal species including many that are unique to them. Aridity is a multifaceted environmental stress combining a lack of water with limited food availability and typically extremes of temperature, impacting animal species across the planet from polar cold valleys, to Andean deserts and the Sahara. These harsh environments are also home to diverse microbial co

Modelling the drivers of outbreak communication in online media news for improved event-based surveillance.

Epidemic intelligence (EI) practitioners at health agencies monitor various sources to detect and follow up on disease outbreak news, including online media monitoring. The Platform for Automated Extraction of Disease Information from the Web (PADI-web), developed in 2016 for the French Platform for Epidemiosurveillance in Animal Health (Platform ESA), monitors and collects outbreak-related news from online media, allowing users to detect and anticipate response to disease outbreaks. Given the mass number of outbreak-related news collected with PADI-web, we aimed to understand better what driv

Characterisation and prevalence of community-associated MRSA among horses, dogs, cats and their human handlers: a cross-sectional study.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as an infectious organism of public health significance has evolved to a genetically distinct community-acquired MRSA with extended resistance to other than β-lactams. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 149 participants handling 446 animals (240 horses and 206 companion animals). The isolates were characterised as S. aureus and MRSA based on polymerase chain reaction detection of the nuc, mecA and mecC genes and the pvl gene for differentiation as community associated/livestock associated or hospital associated. The isolation rate of

Honeybee communication during collective defence is shaped by predation.

BACKGROUND: Social insect colonies routinely face large vertebrate predators, against which they need to mount a collective defence. To do so, honeybees use an alarm pheromone that recruits nearby bees into mass stinging of the perceived threat. This alarm pheromone is carried directly on the stinger; hence, its concentration builds up during the course of the attack. We investigate how bees react to different alarm pheromone concentrations and how this evolved response pattern leads to better coordination at the group level. RESULTS: We first present a dose-response curve to the alarm pherom

Measurement of Bone Metastatic Tumor Growth by a Tibial Tumorigenesis Assay.

Bone metastasis is a frequent and lethal complication of many cancer types (i.e., prostate cancer, breast cancer, and multiple myeloma), and a cure for bone metastasis remains elusive. To recapitulate the process of bone metastasis and understand how cancer cells metastasize to bone, intracardiac injection and intracaudal arterial animal models were developed. The intratibial injection animal model was established to investigate the communication between cancer cells and the bone microenvironment and to mimic the setting of prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis. Given that detailed pro

International standards for brucellosis prevention and management.

International standards are a crucial element in brucellosis prevention and management. They allow policy-makers, scientists, epidemiologists, laboratories and trade entities to have a common vocabulary for communication and understanding of the disease. These standards cover the entire spectrum of activities from surveillance, testing, prophylaxis, transport and trade to policy development, research and reporting. Developing, adhering to and monitoring standards increases both the effectiveness and efficiency of prevention and management programmes. Creating standards with the input of all st

Why statistical learning researchers should study nonhuman animals.

Statistical learning (SL) - the ability to detect patterns in sensory input without explicit instruction - is crucial for building internal models of the environment. In humans, it notably supports language acquisition, including word segmentation and grammar learning. Evidence across primates, songbirds, rodents, and insects indicate that SL is a widely shared evolutionarily conserved ability. The computational complexity of the mechanisms involved; however, varies between species, likely reflecting specific cognitive limitations. Alternatively, specific competences may have evolved to suppor

Advances in Pharmacological Approaches to Tinnitus and Hyperacusis: Insights into Mechanisms, Biomarkers, and Clinical Heterogeneity from an International Scientific Meeting.

Pharmacological approaches to tinnitus have remained peripheral within research, despite persistent patient demand and advances in auditory neuroscience. There is increasing consideration of whether these developments now justify renewed focus on pharmacological research in tinnitus and hyperacusis. This paper presents a narrative synthesis of perspectives arising from an international scientific meeting, based on invited contributions from speakers who expanded on themes related to their presentations, integrating insights from systems neuroscience, cellular and molecular mechanisms, animal a

Sex-Specific Behavioral Features of the Prenatal Valproic Acid Rat Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background/Objectives: Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restricted behaviors and impaired social and communication skills. The exact cause of autism remains unknown. One promising animal model for studying autism is the valproic acid rat model. Due to a 1 to 4 bias for males in autism occurrence, most animal model studies investigate only males and neglect females. However, female autism often appears different from that observed in males. Females are said to be less regularly diagnosed because they can "mask" their symptoms. Female autism is as necessary to inv
