[The cerebellum as a major player in motor disturbances related to Autistic Syndrome Disorders].

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders associated with disturbances in communication, social interactions, cognition and affect. ASD are also accompanied by complex movement disorders, including ataxia. A special focus of recent research in this area is made on the striatum and the cerebellum, two structures known not only to control movement but also to be involved in cognitive functions such as memory and language. Dysfunction within the motor system may be associated with abnormal movements in ASD that are translated into ataxia, abnormal pat

Hard tissue organoids: From concept to practice.

Hard tissues are core components maintaining the mechanical integrity and physiological functions of organisms but have limited self-repair capacity. Traditional clinical strategies for hard tissue healing or regeneration face challenges, including donor scarcity. As engineered 3D cell culture systems that recapitulate tissue/organ-specific structures and functions, organoids outperform conventional 2D cell culture systems and animal models, thereby holding substantial potential for hard tissue healing or regeneration. Regrettably, constructing desired hard tissue organoids is highly demanding

The neuropathology of amnesia.

Relations between brain damage and memory disturbance are outlined with emphasis on the so-called amnesic syndrome. Following a brief introduction into forms of memory and memory failures, the basic causes of brain damaage (with relevance to amnestic failures) are described. Thereafter, the two best-known forms of brain damage-amnesia relations are reviewed: the consequences of damage to medial temporal lobe structures and to diencephalic regions. For the cases with medial temporal lobe damage, evidence is reported in greater detail for H.M., who has been examined more than any other amnesic p

B-mode, Doppler, and Elastography abdominal ultrasound in Tamandua tetradactyla.

The aim of this study was to describe the normal B-mode, Doppler, and 2D Shear Wave Elastography ultrasonographic findings of some abdominal structures in a six-month-old male Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla). The animal was found and rescued by the environmental police after being discovered in the wild near its mother, who had died in a car accident. For the ultrasonographic exams, the animal's abdominal region was shaved, and only physical restraint was used. In the B-mode exam, the urinary bladder, small intestine, kidneys, left adrenal gland, stomach, liver, and gallbladder were

Visualization of the Cartilage and Bone Elements in the Craniofacial Structures by Alcian Blue and Alizarin Red Staining.

Craniofacial morphogenesis is underpinned by orchestrated growth and form-shaping activity of skeletal and soft tissues in the head and face. Disruptions during development can lead to dysmorphology of the skull, jaw, and the pharyngeal structures. Developmental disorders can be investigated in animal models to elucidate the molecular and cellular consequences of the morphogenetic defects. A first step in determining the disruption in the development of the head and face is to analyze the phenotypic features of the skeletal tissues. Examination of the anatomy of bones and cartilage over time a

Mobile encapsulated bodies comprising fat necrosis and fibrous tissue in the abdominal cavity of cows.

The microscopical features of 18 samples of fat necrosis and/or fibrous tissue removed from the abdominal cavity during laparotomy from 15 cows were studied. The nodular, ivory-coloured mobile structures were free-floating in the abdominal cavity, were not attached to any abdominal tissues or organs, and were completely surrounded by a fibrous capsule. Abdominal fat necrosis (bovine lipomatosis) was not observed in any animal. The structures comprised either necrotic fat, fibrous tissue or varying proportions of both. Focal calcification and mild inflammatory cell infiltration and accumulation

Panic disorder: is the PAG involved?

Data from studies with humans have suggested that abnormalities of midbrain structures, including the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG), could be involved in the neurobiology of panic disorder (PD). The electrical stimulation of the PAG in neurosurgical patients induces panic-like symptoms and the effect of drugs that are effective in the treatment of PD in the simulation of public speaking model of anxiety is in agreement with data from animal models of PD. Structural neuroimaging studies have shown increases in gray matter volume of midbrain and pons of PD patients. There is also evidence of

Experimental microneurosurgery of the trigeminal ganglion and ophthalmic-maxillary nerve in the rat: subtemporal fossa approach.

In the researches of the innervation relationship between trigeminal ganglion and a particular structure in the head, it is usually necessary to apply neural tracers into the ganglion for anterograde nerve tracing study or perform bilateral trigeminal nerve transecting for degeneration study. A common surgical approach for exposing these structures in the rat was to remove a piece of skull and a portion of brain. While investigating the innervation of rat's pineal gland from its trigeminal ganglion, we used a subtemporal fossa approach, whereby the mortality of the animal was remarkably reduce

Assessing the toxicity of tau aggregation.

Abnormally phosphorylated and aggregated tau protein is the primary component of pathological structures that are closely associated with neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease, Pick disease, corticobasal degeneration, progressive supranuclear palsy and many other neurodegenerative tauopathies, leading to the hypothesis that these structures are toxic mediators of disease progression. Results from animal models designed to test this hypothesis have yielded evidence that can suggest either a pathogenic, beneficial, or incidental role for tau aggregation. This review summarizes the differences

The human glenohumeral joint. A proprioceptive and stability alliance.

The glenohumeral joint, because of its relatively poor osseous and capsuloligamentous stability, depends upon the proprioceptive and stabilizing capabilities of musculotendinous structures more than any other joint in the human body. The purpose of this review is to compare the morphology, histology, and sensorimotor functional relationships of the human glenohumeral joint with the more abundant animal research data. From a synthesis of this information, a proprioceptive and stability alliance is proposed for the human glenohumeral joint which is initiated by mechanoreceptor activation from ca

The effects of apamin in rats with pretrigeminal or high spinal transsection of the central nervous system.

Rats were injected in one lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) with apamin (100 ng per animal). The resulting desynchronisation pattern in the electrocorticogram (ECoG) and the symptoms of poisoning were monitored before and after transsection at different levels, and following morphine. Apamin acts primarily on the brain stem and spinal cord, i.e. structures possessing a sensory input, and then indirectly on the higher integrating systems. There is no general parallelism between receptor density and locus of action.

[The variability of the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer (Acariformes, Sarcoptidae) in connection with the epidemiology of scabies. A rank system for the variability of the chaetoid integument in females].

The variability of the naked section of the chaetoid cover of itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei De Geer females was studied. The sample used was divided into 5 grades by the number of undeveloped chaetoids. The structures surrounding the naked section, its size and dimensions of the female body were analysed in each grade of specimens. Such grade scale for describing the chaetoid cover proved to be useful for comparative analysis of human and animal forms of itch mite.

[Results of animal experiments on the healing of bone defects in os frontale and os parietale after implantation of tricalciumphosphate sheets (author's transl)].

The healing of artificial one defects in the region of sinus frontalis and or parietale following implantation of tricalciumphosphate sheets was controlled in animal experiments. After 8 weeks, the implants were in direct bone contact without any demarcation of soft tissue structures. The tunica mucosa of the frontal sinus covered the ceramic sheet totally. Comparable results on the bone-contacting side of the implant have never been demonstrated before by other biomaterials like metal, acrylate, or aluminiumoxide ceramics.

Physiology of Dystonia: Animal Studies.

Dystonia is currently ranked as the third most prevalent motor disorder. It is typically characterized by involuntary muscle over- or co-contractions that can cause painful abnormal postures and jerky movements. Dystonia is a heterogenous disorder-across patients, dystonic symptoms vary in their severity, body distribution, temporal pattern, onset, and progression. There are also a growing number of genes that are associated with hereditary dystonia. In addition, multiple brain regions are associated with dystonic symptoms in both genetic and sporadic forms of the disease. The heterogeneity of

Social isolation and the brain: effects and mechanisms.

An obvious consequence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is the worldwide reduction in social interaction, which is associated with many adverse effects on health in humans from babies to adults. Although social development under normal or isolated environments has been studied since the 1940s, the mechanism underlying social isolation (SI)-induced brain dysfunction remains poorly understood, possibly due to the complexity of SI in humans and translational gaps in findings from animal models. Herein, we present a systematic review that focused on brain changes at the molecular, ce

Monitoring of antibiotic consumption in livestock: a German feasibility study.

Every application of antibacterial drugs in veterinary medicine may encourage selection for resistant bacteria. In Germany no valid data are available which would be suitable for a species specific estimation of drug consumption especially regarding food producing animals. Therefore, a representative monitoring of consumption of antibacterial drugs in food producing animals should be implemented. As a first step, a feasibility project was conducted to identify the technical preconditions and develop a concept for a regular monitoring system within Germany as a country with a non-central federa

[Neuroanatomy of panic disorder].

OBJECTIVES: Animal model studies may allow greater elucidation of the cerebral circuits involved in the genesis of panic disorder (PD), but these studies have not yet been fully analyzed. METHODS: The authors review recent literature on the neurobiology and neuroanatomy of PD. RESULTS: In this update, the authors present a revision of data that demonstrates the existence of a "fear network", which has as its main point the central nucleus of the amygdale and includes the hypothalamus, the thalamus, the hippocampus, the periaqueductal gray region, the locus ceruleus and other brainstem struct

Cataract induction in rabbits with the Nd-YAG laser.

The study of occlusion amblyopia and its therapy has involved animal models of stimulus deprivation achieved by various means, none of which closely simulates human congenital cataract. The authors used the Nd-YAG laser as a means of inducing cataracts in rabbit eyes. Twenty rabbit eyes were treated at various frequency and power settings. High energy YAG laser pulses of 10 mJ produced cataracts that at first resembled large bubbles. Over several days, these bubbles coalesced into smaller opacities. With multiple treatments (usually 150-200 pulses), the authors could create a cataract of a spe

Role of basal ganglia neurocircuitry in the pathology of psychiatric disorders.

Over the last few decades, advances in human and animal-based techniques have greatly enhanced our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders. Many of these studies have indicated connectivity between and alterations within basal ganglia structures to be particularly pertinent to the development of symptoms associated with several of these disorders. Here we summarize the connectivity, molecular composition, and function of sites within basal ganglia neurocircuits. Then we review the current literature from both human and animal studies concerning altered basal gan

Isolation of matrices from maize leaf nuclei: identification of a matrix-binding site adjacent to the Adh1 gene.

Nuclear matrices were isolated from maize leaves by the two conventional methods usually employed for the preparation of the corresponding structures of animal origin. It is demonstrated that functionally competent matrices, recognizing and specifically binding the MAR-containing DNA of the mouse kappa-immunoglobulin gene may be prepared by both 2 M NaCl and LIS extractions of maize nuclei. A DNA region with a high affinity for the nuclear matrix was identified at the 5' end of the maize Adh1-S gene, distal to the promoter region. The presence of sites of reported altered chromatin structure i
