Faecal samples from suckling piglets from 113 litters on 25 farms in the Netherlands were examined to study the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites, in particular Strongyloides ransomi and Isospora suis. S. ransomi was not found but I. suis was demonstrated in 17 of the 25 farms and in 41 out of 77 litters of these farms (53%). No other parasites were found. On the basis of these results, a longitudinal study on the incidence and significance of I. suis was performed on 10 farms (5 litters/farm). A plasmid encoding Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) prM and E proteins was constructed, and its efficacy as a candidate vaccine against JEV was evaluated in suckling mice. Development of experimental cholera in suckling rabbits is associated with appearance of alterations in glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption of renal cortex. Ultrastructural changes of nephrons appear in the adhesion period and progress 24 hours later. In this case, particular vulnerability of the kidneys is associated with insufficient development of principal stages both in the cavity and membrane digestion in the gut, therefore, the kidney plays a role of one of the components of the protein-splitting system in the organism.

Kasba (Chuzan) virus (an orbivirus), strain K-47, produced encephalopathy with severe necrosis in suckling mice inoculated intracerebrally. On day 3 after inoculation with 10(3)TCID50, the mice showed severe focal encephalomalacia and meningitis. On day 4, necrosis had spread to the midbrain, cerebellum and spinal cord. Clostridium chauvoei is an anaerobic bacterium, widespread in the environment, and one of the causes of gas gangrene in animals. We describe an outbreak of gas gangrene in 1- to 3-day-old suckling piglets in a commercial farrowing farm caused by C. chauvoei. Twenty-five litters were affected, resulting in 30 deaths and a ~1% increase in preweaning mortality.
