The aim of this study was to work out a clinical test which is possible to measure the anterior talar drawer (ATD) in patients after ankle sprain. The instrument for evaluation was called "ankle meter". The instrument consists of two plastic scales (heal scale and tibia scale). The instrument allows quantifying the results of the anterior drawing test. A total of 38 persons (16 men, 22 women) were available as control group. The persons were 28.8+/-10.1 years old. No proband had any ankle problems in his history. A total of 45 patients (25 males, 20 females) suffering from ankle sprain were in

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to quantitatively examine the flexibility of sprained ankles using an arthrometer device and compare the differences in flexibility between ankles following the first sprains and ankles with repeated severe sprains and chronic symptoms.
DESIGN: A retrospective in vivo study was used.
BACKGROUND: Many in vitro studies have demonstrated a significant role of joint flexibility in determining mechanical laxity of human cadaveric ankles after sectioning of the lateral ligaments, but few in vivo studies have used the technique to provide objective measureme

Assessment of ankle mobility is complex and of clinical relevance after an ankle sprain. This study develops and tests a biomechanical model to assess active ankle circumduction and its reliability. The model was then applied to compare individuals' ankle mobility between injured and noninjured ankles after a sprain episode. Twenty patients with subacute unilateral ankle sprain were assessed at 4 weeks and 10 weeks after the injury. They underwent a clinical exam and an ankle circumduction test during which the kinematics were recorded with an optoelectronic device. A biomechanical model was a

BACKGROUND: Pediatric ankle injuries are common, giving rise to ∼17% of all physeal injuries. An os subfibulare in a child with an ankle sprain may be confused with a type VII transepiphyseal fracture. Here, we evaluate the clinical and radiographic features of type VII transepiphyseal fractures to those of os subfibulare presenting with acute ankle trauma with the hypothesis that radiographs are necessary for final diagnosis and neither clinical history nor examination would be diagnostic.
METHODS: We performed an internal review board-approved, retrospective chart review of patients identif

Obtaining functional alignment of a total ankle replacement, including physiologic sagittal plane range of motion, is paramount for a successful outcome. This article reviews the literature on techniques available for correction of osseous and soft-tissue equinus at the time of index total ankle replacement. These techniques include anterior tibiotalar joint cheilectomy, posterior superficial muscle compartment lengthening, posterior ankle capsule release, and release of the posterior portions of the medial and lateral collateral ligament complexes. The rationale for these procedures and the o

CONTEXT: Clinicians perform therapeutic interventions, such as stretching, manual therapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound, and exercises, to increase ankle dorsiflexion. However, authors of previous studies have not determined which intervention or combination of interventions is most effective.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the magnitude of therapeutic intervention effects on and the most effective therapeutic interventions for restoring normal ankle dorsiflexion after ankle sprain.
DATA SOURCES: We performed a comprehensive literature search in Web of Science and EBSCO HOST from 1965 to May 29, 2011

Between 2002 and 2008, 130 consecutive ankles were replaced with an hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium-HA-coated Ankle Evolutive System total ankle prosthesis. Plain radiographs were analysed by two independent observers. Osteolytic lesions were classified by their size and location, with cavities > 10 mm in diameter considered to be 'marked'. CT scanning was undertaken in all patients with marked osteolysis seen on the plain radiographs. Osteolytic lesions were seen on the plain films in 48 (37%) and marked lesions in 27 (21%) ankles. The risk for osteolysis was found to be 3.1 (95% confidence

A young girl suffering from ankle pain occurring after gymnastics classes was referred to the rheumatology department by an orthopedic surgeon because a rheumatological condition was suspected to cause her symptoms. MRI was useful in pointing to the correct diagnosis of accessory navicular bone (AN). The morphological classification of ANs is discussed and the imaging modalities for diagnosis are presented.

BACKGROUND: The functional outcomes following ankle arthrodesis are not known. The purpose of the present study was to compare the intermediate-term clinical results for a group of patients in whom an ankle arthrodesis had been performed with use of modern surgical techniques with the findings for a group of healthy gender and age-matched controls on the basis of validated outcome measures and gait analysis.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients who had undergone ankle arthrodesis for the treatment of isolated unilateral ankle arthritis were identified and retrospectively assessed clinically and radio

PURPOSE: Decreasing swelling after ankle sprain is a main focus of treatment, as it is believed that swelling is related to function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between ankle-foot swelling and self-assessed ankle function in the early period after ankle sprain.
METHODS: Thirty-six individuals were tested for ankle-foot volume and self-assessed ankle function within days of spraining their ankle. Volumetric measurements of the injured and uninjured ankle-foot segment were taken with a foot and ankle volumeter. Stepwise linear regression analysis was performed, w

OBJECTIVE: To pose the question, "Can chronic ankle instability be prevented?" The evaluation and treatment of chronic ankle instability is a significant challenge in athletic health care. The condition affects large numbers of athletes and is associated with reinjury and impaired performance. The management of acute injuries varies widely but in athletic training has traditionally focused on initial symptom management and rapid return to activity. A review of practice strategies and philosophies suggests that a more detailed evaluation of all joints affected by the injury, correction of hypom

Following an ankle injury, athletes sometimes brace the injured ankle in hopes of minimizing the likelihood of suffering a recurring injury. This study aims to evaluate the effects of wearing an Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis (ASO) ankle brace unilaterally on the dominant side on bilateral ankle joint kinetics and kinematics and peroneus longus EMG activity. Since a significant proportion of ankle injuries in basketball occur during rebounding, data was collected during a simulated rebounding task. Rebounding is defined as the act of retrieving a missed shot attempt. Subjects oftentimes jump verti

Inadequate healing and rehabilitation after an ankle sprain may lead to chronic ankle instability, predisposing patients to impingement symptoms. The initial injury may also cause osteochondral lesions of the talus or peroneal tendon injuries, which are frequently underdiagnosed because symptoms overlap early with those of a simple ankle sprain. This review finds that rehabilitation remains the cornerstone of treatment for instability and impingement, while peroneal injuries are typically managed surgically. Management of osteochondral lesions depends on the type and severity.

Ankle arthrodesis has proven to be a time-tested procedure for not only degenerative joint disease but a variety of indications. With the addition of updated techniques and improved fixation, results have become even more reproducible. There has been a recent shift away from ankle arthrodesis to total ankle arthroplasty. However, data shows that while there has been a significant increase in usage of total ankle replacements, the utilization of ankle arthrodesis remains unchanged. This article incorporates the various indications, approaches, and fixation methods that make the ankle arthrodesi
