Previous neuropsychological studies on acquired dyslexia revealed a double dissociation in reading impairments. Patients with phonological dyslexia have selective difficulty in reading pseudo-words, while those with surface dyslexia misread exception words. This double dissociation in reading abilities has often been reported in brain-damaged patients, but it has not been consistently shown in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we investigated reading impairments and their anatomical correlates in various neurodegenerative diseases. First, we performed a behavioral analys

PURPOSE: Kiran and colleagues (Kiran, 2007, 2008; Kiran & Johnson, 2008; Kiran & Thompson, 2003) previously suggested that training atypical examples within a semantic category is a more efficient treatment approach to facilitating generalization within the category than training typical examples. In the present study, the authors extended previous work examining the notion of semantic complexity within goal-derived (ad hoc) categories in individuals with aphasia. Methods Six individuals with fluent aphasia (age range = 39-84 years) and varying degrees of naming deficits and semantic impairmen

In our study, we document the case of a 48-year-old patient who presented at our clinic with various neurological disturbances. Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed the presence of an intraventricular meningioma located in the body of the left lateral ventricle measuring 60 mm in diameter. This tumor was classified as a giant meningioma, accompanied by a significant amount of digitiform-type edema. A surgical procedure was conducted, resulting in a gross total resection of the tumor. Histopathological analysis identified the tumor as a fibrous meningioma. Postoperative assessments, as well as f

INTRODUCTION: Prior evidence suggests auditory short-term memory (STM) and repetition share several processing elements. However, it remains elusive whether auditory STM capacity and repetition ability show overlapping neural correlates. We sought to identify the brain structures underpinning STM capacity and repetition outcomes in patients with chronic left hemisphere stroke and aphasia.
METHODS: Fifty-four left hemisphere stroke patients with aphasia and 50 demographically matched healthy controls underwent digit span and language tasks. Structural and diffusion images were acquired in all

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the strip placement with navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) for cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) in monitoring the arcuate fasciculus in temporal lobectomy under general anesthesia for epileptogenic temporal low-grade glioma.
METHODS: We collected a series of epileptogenic temporal low-grade gliomas that underwent temporal lobectomy under general anesthesia between November 2022 and December 2023. The positioning of the strips for CCEPs was guided by the nTMS positive points on neuronavigation. Postoperative follow-up was for 3 months. We condu

PURPOSE: Improving writing in people with aphasia could improve ability to communicate, reduce isolation and increase access to information. One area that has not been sufficiently explored is the effect of impairment based spelling therapies on functional writing. A multiple case study was conducted with eight participants with aphasia subsequent to stroke. This aimed to measure the effects of spelling therapy on functional writing and perception of disability.
METHOD: Participants engaged in 10 sessions of copy and recall spelling therapy. Outcome measures included spelling to dictation of

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It has been reported that National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores correlate poorly with hypoperfused tissue measured by perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) in nondominant hemisphere stroke. We conducted 2 studies to determine whether tests of hemispatial neglect provide a better measure of hypoperfusion and reperfusion than NIHSS in nondominant hemisphere stroke.
METHODS: In study 1, 74 patients with acute ischemic, supratentorial stroke were administered the NIHSS, tests of neglect or aphasia, and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and PWI on day 1 (<24 h

Dr. Audrey Holland was a friend to people with aphasia and related disorders, care partners, community advocates, students, clinicians, educators, researchers, and more. Her profound impact extended across these diverse communities within aphasiology and speech-language pathology. Through her words and deeds, Audrey established a rich legacy that continues to guide and inspire countless individuals. A careful examination of her contributions reveals a roadmap for those seeking to embark on a similar journey of compassion and influence. To pay tribute to our mentor and friend, we conducted a th

PURPOSE: This study examined topic initiation (TI) in conversations involving people with aphasia (PWA), matched people without aphasia (M-PWoA), and speech-language pathologists who were their conversation partners (SLP-Ps). For each speaker type, we analyzed patterns of distribution of typical mechanisms of TI and patterns of simultaneous use of multiple TI mechanisms. Lastly, we examined associations between use of simultaneous TI mechanisms and communicative success.
METHOD: Twenty PWA and 20 M-PWoA each participated in two conversations with SLP-Ps. Conversation samples were analyzed for

BACKGROUND: Beyond the severity of voice, speech and language impairments, one potential predictor of communication success across adult populations with communication disorders may be perceived social support: the expectation that others will provide support if needed. Despite the preponderance of intervention approaches that assume a positive relationship between perceived social support and patient-reported communication success, the evidence base for these relationships is limited.
AIMS: The aim of this systematic review is to explore relationships between measures of perceived social sup

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In Italy, approximately 650 individuals receive a diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) every year. Unfortunately, the frequency with which patients are referred to speech-language services is suboptimal, likely due to skepticism regarding the value of speech-language therapy in the context of neurodegeneration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a virtual survey of speech and language therapists (SLTs) across Italy, to collect information about the assessment, intervention and management of patients with PPA. To ensure that as many SLTs as possible receiv

IMPORTANCE: Neurodegenerative diseases can cause dysfunction of neural structures involved in judgment, executive function, emotional processing, sexual behavior, violence, and self-awareness. Such dysfunctions can lead to antisocial and criminal behavior that appears for the first time in the adult or middle-aged individual or even later in life.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency and type of criminal behavior among patients with a diagnosed dementing disorder.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review of 2397 patients who were seen at the Un

BACKGROUND: Discourse assessment and treatment in aphasia rehabilitation is a priority focus for a range of stakeholder groups. However, a significant majority of speech and language therapists (SLTs) infrequently conduct discourse analysis, and do not feel competent in doing so. Known barriers identified in other countries, specifically a lack of time, training, expertise and resources, affect use of discourse analysis in clinical practice.
AIMS: To investigate UK SLTs' reported practices and views of discourse analysis, barriers and facilitators, and clinical feasibility in aphasia rehabili

BACKGROUND: Neurological involvement in Q fever is rare, often presenting with non-specific symptoms and posing significant diagnostic challenges. We report a case of Q fever meningoencephalitis characterized by a relapse of neurological symptoms and atypical cerebrospinal fluid findings. In addition, we conducted a review of published English language cases of acute Q fever with neurological manifestations reported over the past 35 years.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old previously healthy woman presented with acute aphasia and somnolence. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed lymphocytic pl

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a less common stroke subtype. While long term outcome factors have been extensively studied, short term deterioration remains poorly understood.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a 10-years retrospective analysis at a high-volume tertiary center, including consecutive patients diagnosed with CVT. The primary outcome was early deterioration (ED), defined as decrease in Glasgow Coma Scale, de novo or worsening of focal deficit, death from neurological cause, new or enlarged parenchymal lesions or subarachnoid hemorrhage during hospitalization.

INTRODUCTION: Logopenic progressive aphasia (lv-PPA) is a form of primary progressive aphasia and is predominantly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. The neuropsychological profiles of lv-PPA and typical clinical AD are, however, distinct. In particular, these two syndromes differ on attention span measures, where auditory attention span is more impaired in lv-PPA than in AD and visuospatial span appears more impaired in AD than in lv-PPA. The neural basis of these span profiles, however, remains unclear.
METHOD: Sixteen lv-PPA and 21 AD matched patients, and 15 education-mat

OBJECTIVE: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) and logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) are clinical syndromes associated with posterior brain atrophy. We compared PCA and LPA to each other and to an age-matched group of patients with early age at onset of Alzheimer disease (EO-AD). We hypothesized that these 3 syndromes are part of a single clinical and biologic continuum.
METHODS: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to assess atrophy in 14 PCA, 10 LPA, and 16 EO-AD patients compared to 65 healthy controls. Genetic analysis for APOE was conducted in 30 patients and 44 controls. Four patients

While phonologic errors may be one of the salient features of the logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA), sparse data are available on their neuroimaging correlates. The purpose of this study was to identify brain regions associated with different types of phonologic errors across several tasks for participants with lvPPA. Correlational analyses between phonologic errors across tasks most likely to elicit such errors and specific left hemisphere gray matter volume regions were conducted for 20 participants. Findings point to the inferior parietal lobe and supramarginal gyrus
