Orthopantomography and INAIL assessment of dental injury. Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro.

The protection of workers' health is defended by the Italian Constitution, and sees its most extensive application in the work of the INAIL (Istituto Nazionale per l'Assicurazione contro gli Infortuni sul Lavoro-National Institute for Assurance against Work-related Accidents). In the T.U. (Testo Unico-Complete Text of Legislation) 1124/1965, dental injury is compensated with fixed percentages for permanent impairment, depending on whether the prosthesis applied is effectual or otherwise. The INAIL's primary task of assigning the necessary treatment and recovering the claimant's occupational ap

Fungal allies in saline soils: mineral mobilization, plant nutrient acquisition and salinity stress tolerance.

Soil salinity is an issue in agriculture. It also has a vast effect on decreasing agrarian productivity, as it limits the availability of nutrients and results in physiological stress on plants. Traditional methods of managing and treating soil cannot be used in saline and mineral-deficient conditions. As a solution to these problems, fungi are important biological agents for sustainable solutions. This review concentrates on fungal diversity and its aptitude to alleviate salinity stress and enhance nutrient availability through mineral solubilization and mobilization and, in selected plant-fu

Relevance of cystatin-C, N-acetylglucosaminidase, and Interleukin-18 with the diagnosis of acute kidney injury induced by cadmium in rats.

The diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) is frequently established on modifications in serum creatinine (SCr). The discriminative and prognostic aptitudes of serum cystatin-C as well as N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) and Interleukin-18 (IL-18) were inspected for the estimation of AKI. In this study twelve rats were alienated into two groups: control group received saline, second group received cadmium chloride at a dose (2.4 mg Cd/kg/day, i.p) for 30 days. Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), SCr, and IL-18 serum level were measured in addition to serum and tissue content of cystatin-C and NAG. AKI mod

[On the vocational counselling of physically disabled young people--some remarks on the findings presented by E.-M. Weinwurm-Krause (author's transl)].

Hand in hand with the continuing development of vocational counselling for disabled young people went to updating and differentiation of vocational orientation material available to the disabled for preparing their choice of occupation. Increased attention had above all been paid to counselling of the thalidomide-affected. Their concerns, especially as regards assessment of aptitudes and inclinations, are particularly headed in vocational guidance, an instrument that had been defined more specifically in the late seventies. The vocational education centres must be considered an essential aid i

The interaction of relative age with maturation and body size in female handball talent selection.

The relative age effects (RAEs) and biological maturation are two distinct factors that have been identified to affect talent identification and selection. Previous research has suggested that talent selection should include sport-specific technical tasks instead of body size and/or physical test measurements, assuming that the technical tasks are less influenced by variations in maturation. Our purpose was to examine the prevalence of RAEs and to assess biological maturity, body size, and body composition within a single talent selection program for female handball players. Team coaches' reco

Experts, but not novices, exhibit StartReact indicating experts use the reticulospinal system more than novices.

Motor skill acquisition utilizes a wide array of neural structures; however, few articles evaluate how the relative contributions of these structures shift over the course of learning. Recent evidence from rodents and songbirds suggests there is a transfer from cortical to subcortical structures following intense, repetitive training. Evidence from humans indicate that the reticulospinal system is modulated over the course of skill acquisition and may be a subcortical facilitator of learning. The objective of this study was to evaluate how reticulospinal contributions are modulated by task exp

Differences in specific learning disability identification with the Woodcock-Johnson IV.

The Ability Achievement Discrepancy model remains the primary identification method used by school personnel. This study examined identification of a specific learning disability using the Ability Achievement Discrepancy model with the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ-IV). Two different test scores can be used to represent the ability construct: one that maintains the overlap between intelligence quotient (IQ) and basic psychological processes (i.e., general intellectual ability) and one that mostly removes the overlap between IQ and basic psychological processes (i.e., fluid-crystallized intelligence)

Cognitive and emotional empathy in typical and impaired readers and its relationship to reading competence.

Studies indicate a strong relationship between empathy and language skills, but the relationship between reading and empathy remains elusive, although a shared neural substrate (the temporoparietal junction; TPJ) has been implicated in both reading and empathy. Motivated by these observations, the purpose of the current study was to examine empathic skills in a large spectrum of reading abilities, including typical readers and individuals with dyslexia, and their relationship to reading competence. We administered the Intrapersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) test, which differentiates between two

Sex differences in developmental reading disability: new findings from 4 epidemiological studies.

CONTEXT: An influential article published in 1990 claimed that the increased rate of reading disability in boys was a consequence of referral bias. OBJECTIVES: To summarize the history of research on sex differences in reading disability and to provide new evidence from 4 independent epidemiological studies about the nature, extent, and significance of sex differences in reading disability. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study comprised 989 individuals (52.1% male) in a cohort born between April 1972 and March 1973 in Dunedin, New Zeal

Students classified as LD who petitioned for or fulfilled the college foreign language requirement-are they different? A replication study.

This replication study compared 86 petition students who received course substitutions for the college foreign language (FL) requirement with 40 nonpetition students who fulfilled the FL requirement by passing FL courses on cognitive and academic achievement measures and graduating grade point average. The results showed significant differences between the two groups, favoring the nonpetition group on one measure, the American College Testing (ACT) score, when IQ was used as a covariate; however, no significant group differences remained when ACT score was used as a covariate. Dyslexia linked to talent: global visual-spatial ability.

Dyslexia has long been defined by deficit. Nevertheless, the view that visual-spatial talents accompany dyslexia has grown, due to reports of individuals with dyslexia who possess visual-spatial strengths, findings of elevated incidence of dyslexia in certain visual-spatial professions, and the hypothesis that left-hemisphere deficits accompany right-hemisphere strengths. Studies have reported superior, inferior, and average levels of visual-spatial abilities associated with dyslexia. In two investigations, we found an association between dyslexia and speed of recognition of impossible figures

Special talents in Geschwind's and Galaburda's theory of cerebral lateralization: an examination in a female population.

Geschwind and Galaburda (1985) proposed that delayed growth of posterior left hemisphere sites in male dyslexics are associated with markers of anomalous dominance (AD) and special cognitive talents. We found that talent in a female population was related to the strength of nonright-handedness, and was elevated in right-handed individuals with histories of familial left-handedness. Subjects reporting a history of dyslexia tended to be musically talented. While immune disorders were not related to talent for the whole population, they did co-occur with talents in a group of 10 individuals repor

A qualitative study of goalkeeper coaches' perceptions of key qualities in talented youth soccer goalkeepers.

BACKGROUND: Despite a substantial body of literature on identifying talent in outfield players, information on goalkeepers (GKs) is scarce due to the specialist demands associated with the position. The purpose of this study was to explore which qualities GK coaches perceive as important for talented youth soccer GKs. METHODS: This qualitative study used a pragmatic research paradigm. The sample consisted of eight GK coaches (mean age 50.12±9.33 years; mean experience 17.25±9.97 years) who were purposively recruited to participate in the study. A semi-structured interview guide was used to co

A machine learning approach for the classification of sports based on a coaches' perspective of environmental, individual and task requirements: A sports profile analysis.

Well-designed talent programmes in sports with a focus on talent identification, orientation, development, and transfer support the engagement of young individuals and the pursuit of elite performance. To facilitate these processes, an analysis of task, environmental and individual characteristics per sport is much needed. The aims of this study were to 1) analyse whether unique profiles per sport could be established by generic characteristics and 2) to discuss similarities and differences for the potential application in talent development and transfer. By means of a validated survey, 1247 c

Exploring How Initial Response to Instruction Predicts Morphology Outcomes Among Students With Decoding Difficulties.

Children with weak decoding skills often struggle to learn multisyllabic words during reading instruction. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which initial response to morphological awareness instruction, along with specific language and cognitive variables (i.e., phonological awareness, rapid naming, orthographic knowledge/awareness, verbal comprehension, working memory), predicts responsiveness to morphological awareness instruction for third-grade students who were at risk for reading disabilities. Thirty-nine third-grade students with decoding deficits were

Challenges of talent development in alpine ski racing: a narrative review.

Alpine ski racing is one of the most popular sports in many countries; nevertheless, selection disadvantages and severe injuries result in high dropout rates. In this review we summarize existing knowledge about the specific challenges associated with selection bias and injuries, and their effects on talent development in ski racing. The relative age effect (RAE) appears in all age categories of national Austrian and international alpine ski racing. Relatively younger athletes seem to only have a chance for selection if they are early maturing. Talent selection processes should consider both t

Self-Doubt Effects Depend on Beliefs about Ability: Experimental Evidence.

Past research has shown negative effects of chronic self-doubt on psychological and performance outcomes. Recent correlational evidence suggests that incremental beliefs about ability ameliorate certain self-doubt effects. The current research examines whether these correlational findings are robust when subjected to experimental testing. In Experiment 1, we manipulated beliefs about ability (incremental vs. entity) and demonstrated that changing beliefs about ability altered responses to self-doubt. For individuals primed with entity beliefs, higher self-doubt was associated with greater nerv
