OBJECTIVES: To describe the epidemiological status of oral cancer (OC) in India along with updates on risk factors, advances and gaps in preventive measures, treatment, costs of care and monitoring.
METHODS: Two national estimates of incidence and mortality were cited, one for 2016 by the Global Burden of Disease India Study and one based on projections for 2020 by GLOBOCAN. The National Cancer Registry Project provided local and regional incidence and trends using data from 2012-2016. Scientific literature, reports of the NCRP, the IARC and government press releases were also consulted.

The literature supports the use of several medical interventions, including micronutrients, antioxidants, proteolytic enzymes, immune modulators (mainly steroids), and agents to promote blood flow. Epidemiological data have proved the association of consumption of areca nut with the causation of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). OSF is a chronic inflammatory disease with the potential for malignant transformation from 7 to 13%. The establishment of animal models makes it easier for researchers to focus on the therapeutic options to combat this disease further. We developed and compared two areca nut extract (ANE) administration methods in Swiss albino mice to establish OSF.
