The presence of large numbers of Ukrainians looking for refuge in Poland is a new experience for Poles. The ongoing war and the uncertainty of the situation of those displaced may cause anxiety and lead to stressful reactions, exacerbated by endlessly circulating information on hostilities. Therefore, the sense of security may be threatened not only among Ukrainians who have fled to Poland, but also among people who support Ukrainians, who offer them help and shelter. Prolonged support, if not accompanied by proper selfcare can increase the risk of burnout as well as lead to distressful emotio

Orthopedic trauma care in Ukraine, shaped by the ongoing conflict since the Donbas invasion in 2014 and further intensified by the 2022 Russian invasion, reflects the complexity of treating modern wartime injuries in the face of resource constraints and evacuation challenges. Ukrainian medical teams have to the greatest extent possible adhered to Western medical standards, using a tiered care system that spans from the point of injury, to forward surgical teams leading, finally to advanced procedures in tertiary facilities. However, resource shortages and delayed evacuations have led to signif

BACKGROUND: Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) is a public health issue affecting thousands of survivors and with long-term consequences; however, it is underreported and difficult to investigate. This systematic review, covering 2015 to 2024, will explore sexual violence in conflict zones, extract and summarize the various reported health outcomes, and address knowledge gaps.
METHODS: Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method studies will be included to explore the physical, mental, and social consequences of sexual violence. The WHO definition of sexual violence will guide the review

AIMS: When the Interagency Standing Committee (IASC) adopted the composite term mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and published its guidelines for MHPSS in emergency settings in 2007, it aimed to build consensus and strengthen coordination among relevant humanitarian actors. The term MHPSS offered an inclusive tent by welcoming the different terminologies, explanatory models and intervention methods of diverse actors across several humanitarian sectors (e.g., health, protection, education, nutrition). Since its introduction, the term has become well-established within the global h

Exhumed, badly decomposed human remains constitute very difficult research material. It requires a great deal of caution and critical judgment to analyze the nature of injuries, especially those resulting from an explosion. Scientific publications in the field of traumatology concerning injuries caused by the action of explosives mainly focus on the effects of contemporary terrorist or military activities. The results of this research regard mainly clinical medicine and the organization of healthcare. This article discusses the problems and solutions of determining the presence of injuries cau

How can states with a history of recent armed conflict trust one another? Political psychology offers two competing approaches to increase trust between the publics of different countries: appealing to an overarching, common identity above the national level vs. affirming a sense of national identity. This study aims to examine the scope conditions of group-affirmation effects on trust in active conflicts by testing which group-affirmation approach increases trust towards Russia among the Ukrainian public. Distrust between Ukraine and Russia aggravates security fears and limits hope for a mean

Under the laws of armed conflict military medics are deemed non-combatants, and as such are subject to certain protections and limitations. The non-combatant status is defined in the famous Geneva Conventions, which form the basis of the international law of armed conflict. The protections afforded to medical personnel in armed conflict are a result of the need to protect and treat the sick and injured during times of hostility. This paper describes the history and legal development of the non-combatant status, and summarises the importance and implications of the contents of the Geneva Conven

Exposure to armed conflicts profoundly impacts individuals and their communities but provides an opportunity to experience posttraumatic growth (PTG). Whereas most studies examined the direct exposure to the traumatic event, this study investigated the direct and indirect links between type of war exposure (self-exposure, close others' exposure, acquaintances' exposure), and rumination (deliberate and intrusive) to PTG in Israelis following the Israel-Hamas war. Participants (n = 455) completed measures of war exposure, rumination, and PTG. Exposures of close-others and acquaintances were asso

War has historically been a major catalyst for advancement in military medical care and medicine in general. In our current conflicts, advances in battlefield medicine, evacuation techniques, and personal protective equipment have improved survival rates among members of the armed services. With increased survival, there has been increased prevalence of serious but nonfatal injuries, particularly from blunt and penetrating trauma. Blast injuries are the major cause of trauma and have both blunt and penetrating components. With respect to the spine, blasts have led to open, contaminated wounds

Inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus's poem, The New Colossus,1 helped shape the image of the United States as a country compassionate toward the needs of those who emigrated to its shores. The United States has more immigrants than any other country in the world, estimated at more than 40 million people.2 Roughly 18 million children in the United States have at least 1 immigrant parent.2 Most immigrants in the United States arrive with the hope of better educational and economic opportunities.3 Although moving to a new country can offer new opportunities, stability, and safety, th

BACKGROUND: The U.S. armed forces recently experienced a reduction in forces along with an increase in operational tempo. The Air Force and other branches supporting its mission share this common military burden and also experience a unique stressor. The Air Force has developed a military force that can fight by night and return home by day. The relatively new phenomenon of "commuter war" was especially evident during Operation Allied Force over Kosovo.
METHODS: Military personnel (N = 540) participating in Operation Allied Force were administered a survey measuring morale, wellness behaviors

Migration is not always by choice, but rather, influenced by circumstance. Displacement due to human-made disasters, such as armed conflict, constitutes forced migration, also known as involuntary migration. This paper examines the experience of forced displacement due to armed conflict and the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) in conflict zones in the southern Philippines, focusing on the survivors of the 2013 Zamboanga Siege and the 2017 Marawi Siege. The researcher examines the dynamics of violence during armed conflict from a gendered perspective and illuminates the extent to which gende

OBJECTIVE: The Sudan conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and crippling the healthcare system, leading to a resurgence of infectious diseases such as malaria, cholera, and measles.
METHODS: Overcrowded refugee camps with poor sanitation and limited resources have fueled outbreaks, exacerbated by disrupted immunization programs and seasonal rains.
RESULTS: Malaria is spreading rapidly due to inadequate mosquito control, while cholera outbreaks, linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation, have overwhelmed health facilities. Measles outbreaks are escalating due
