Four common species of Baltic anisakids Anisakis simplex, Hysterothylacium auctum, Contracaecum osculatum from fish (the last one also from the grey seal) and C. rudolphii from cormorants were examined using PCR-RFLP technique for working out the method allowing their identification and differentiation. A fragment of nuclear DNA containing intergenic regions (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA together with adjacent sequences of genes coding 18S and 28S rRNA (in total; approximately 1500 bp) was amplified and the products were digested using three endonucleases Hin fI, Hae III and Pvu II. The radiographic findings from 226 patients with acute gastric anisakiasis are reviewed. Suggestive but indeterminate findings such as coarse and broad gastric folds caused by mucosal edema were demonstrated in 224 patients (98%). In 179 patients (88%) mucosal edema was so extensive that it occupied more than half of the entire gastric wall. The most diagnostic radiographic finding, present in 139 patients, was the appearance of a threadlike filling defect about 3 cm in length, showing an anisakis larva itself. Careful demonstration of these radiographic findings is useful for the diagnosis of

Parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE) caused by infection of the gut with parasitic nematodes is one of the most important diseases of livestock animals from both financial and welfare perspectives. Parascaris equorum and Habronema microstoma are of the most endemic nematodes of the world which are currently the major cause of PGE of the domestic horses in Egypt. The present investigation introduced the first morphological description of these nematodes recovered from the domestic horse, Equus ferus caballus (Equidae), in Egypt by light and scanning electron microscopy. Seven P. equorum (fifth stage

P-glycoproteins (Pgps) are suspected to mediate drug extrusion in nematodes contributing to macrocyclic lactone resistance. This association was recently shown for Parascaris Pgp-11. Ivermectin resistance was correlated with the presence of three pgp-11 single nucleotide polymorphisms and/or increased pgp-11 mRNA levels. In the present study, the ability of Pgp-11 to modulate ivermectin susceptibility was investigated by its expression in a pgp-11-deficient Caenorhabditis elegans strain. Expression of Parascaris pgp-11 in two transgenic lines significantly decreased ivermectin susceptibility i

Baylisascaris procyonis is a well-known ascaridoid nematode that causes larva migrans in humans and many other animal species. The North American raccoon (Procyon lotor) is the definitive host, which has been successfully introduced in the past decades to other geographical regions around the world. Two white-headed lemurs (Eulemuralbifrons) from a Zoological Park in Lugo, Spain, developed severe neurological signs within a brief period after being transferred from exhibit and placed in close contact with three captive raccoons from the same zoo. One lemur was euthanized due to the severity of

Hysterothylacium zhoushanensis sp. nov. collected from the intestine of the flatfish Pseudorhombus oligodon (Bleeker) (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae) in the East China Sea is described and illustrated by light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species can be easily distinguished from its congeners by the presence of remarkable lateral alae, the very short intestinal caecum, the unusually long ventricular appendix (ratio of intestinal caecum to ventricular appendix 1:8.74-23.8), the short spicules (0.58-0.81 mm long, representing 1.70-2.08 % of body length) and the number and arran

Gambusia affinis (western mosquitofish) serves as a host for a variety of larval and adult parasites. Gambusia affinis is also an incipient matrotroph, exhibiting adjustments in post-fertilization provisioning to some offspring within a brood using recently acquired resources. Nutrient transfer to embryos is expected to limit the loss of embryo mass during development resulting in larger offspring. Since larger offspring are more likely to survive, maternal contributions are expected to increase fitness. The presence of parasites, particularly intestinal helminths, potentially reduces body con

BACKGROUND: Anisakid nematodes (Anisakis spp. or Pseudoterranova spp.) usually infect gastric or intestinal walls, while they rarely infect in extra-gastrointestinal sites of human body. Generally, Anisakis spp. larvae are highly infected in fish intermediate hosts, whereas Pseudoterranova spp. larvae are very rarely infected. To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports which have documented cases of hepatic anisakiasis caused by Pseudoterranova spp. This report describes the first documented case of hepatic anisakiasis due to infection with Pseudoterranova decipiens and clinical

Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinae obtained from the common fowl Gallus gallus were exposed to 10(-2)-10(-5)M levamisole and albendazole; both compounds caused death of the parasites in vitro. The effect of the drugs was investigated on homogenates of the treated worms. Albendazole, at 10(-2)M, inhibited oxaloacetate reduction by 67 and 53% and malate oxidation by 21 and 17% in A. galli and H. gallinae, respectively, whereas 10(-4)M levamisole completely inhibited malate dehydrogenase activity in both directions in the two parasites. Lactate dehydrogenase was not affected significantly by

From 1969 to 1984, we treated 178 patients with acute gastric anisakiasis caused by gastric mucosal penetration of the Anisakis larvae. Because the larvae of Anisakis can always be observed by endoscopy and removed with biopsy forceps, early performance of endoscopy is highly recommended for patients in whom acute gastric anisakiasis is suspected and for those who have eaten raw fish within 12 hours before onset of the gastric symptoms. Endoscopic removal is essential to relieve the intolerable pain; after relief, the administration of antacids will repair the damaged gastric mucosa. Ulcer for

Equine strongyle infections are prevalent among grazing horses worldwide, yet research on anthelmintic efficacy and parasite management strategies in South Korea remains limited. This study investigated the infection dynamics and parasite burden in horses managed under different systems (pasture vs. stable) over a one-year period in Jeju, South Korea, assessing the impact of management practices on parasite burden and the effectiveness of current deworming regimens. Thirty-two horses were administered ivermectin/praziquantel in June 2022 and assigned to either pasture (n = 16) or stable (n = 1

The results of coproscopical examinations in domestic animals and hedgehogs carried out as routine diagnostics in the years 2003 to 2012 at the Institute for Parasitology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany, are presented. Of 3475 horse faecal samples, 30.1% contained stages of strongyles and 1.3% eggs of Strongyloides westeri and Parascaris equorum, respectively. The most frequently observed parasite stages in 1416 cattle faecal samples were Eimeria oocysts (21.3%) and strongyle eggs or larvae (15.9%). Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae and Fasciola hepatica eggs were identified i

A study of the cross-reactivity among somatic and excretory-secretory antigens of the third stage larvae of Anisakis simplex s.l. and somatic antigens of other ascarid nematodes (Ascaris lumbricoides, A. suum, Toxocara canis, Anisakis physeteris, Hysterothylacium aduncum and H. fabri) was carried out by immunoblotting. It was revealed a high degree of cross-reactivity among ascarids in the 30 and > 212 kDa range by using sera against somatic and excretory-secretory antigens of A. simplex s.l. It has been revealed also specific components of the Anisakis genus (< 7.2, 9, 19 and 25 kDa) that wil

In the past 13 years, 24 cases of anisakiasis have been reported in the United States. Of these, 14 were infections by Phocanema sp. and found in California and Alaska, and most were of the tissue non-invasive type. The remaining 10 cases were infections by larvae of anisakis type I (L3 and L4). Of these 10 cases, 4 were found on the west coast, 5 were on the east coast and one was in Hawaii. In 3 of the 10 cases, the parasite invaded the digestive tract. A characteristic symptom of the throat named "tingling throat" was manifested in 16 of the 24 cases, and this symptom was found to be due to

BACKGROUND: Anisakis simplex is the only fishery-product associated parasite causing clinical allergic responses in humans so far. However, other anisakids, due to the presence of shared or own allergens, could also lead to allergic reactions after sensitization. The aim of this study was to determine if Pseudoterranova decipiens belonging to the family Anisakidae has allergenic activity and is able to induce sensitization after oral administration in a murine (BALB/c mice) model.
RESULTS: The ingestion of A. pegreffii proteins by BALB/c mice, which had been previously sensitized by intraperi

Roundworms of the genus Baylisascaris are natural parasites primarily of wild carnivores, and they can occasionally cause infection in humans and animals. Infection results in visceral larva migrans and/or neural larva migrans, which can be severe or fatal in some animals. Recently, Baylisascaris nematodes isolated from kinkajous (Potos flavus) and previously referred to as Baylisascaris procyonis were renamed as Baylisascaris potosis; however, data regarding the pathogenicity of B. potosis towards animals and humans are lacking. In the present study, we experimentally infected squirrel monkey

We report the clinical and radiologic features of 12 patients with acute intestinal anisakiasis. Diagnosis of anisakiasis was made immunologically by positive antibody to Anisakis larvae and a recent history of raw fish intake. Severe abdominal pain was a major symptom in these patients-half experienced fluid levels indicating ileus on plain x-ray films of the abdomen. Radiologic findings included irregular thickening of the jejunum, ileum, or colon, with mucosal edema and luminal narrowing with dilatation of the proximal intestine. In two cases a thread-like filling defect suggesting a worm w

Serodiagnosis of human anisakidosis is presently hampered by the current lack of standardised serological assays that allow sensitive and specific detection of Anisakidae-specific antibodies in human patients. In the present study, we comparatively evaluated the diagnostic value (by IgG-ELISA) of excretory-secretory antigens (ESAgs) of Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens and Contracaecum osculatum, representing the most frequently found genera responsible for human infection. In addition, we tested also a mix of the three ES preparations (Mix-ESAgs) as well as two recombinant allergens

The present study evaluated the pathogenicity of Baylisascaris potosis, a newly described ascarid nematode, in Mongolian gerbils. Gerbils were infected with varying doses of either B. potosis or Baylisascaris transfuga embryonated eggs (100, 1,000, and 4,000) for 30 days postinfection (pi). Baylisascaris potosis-infected gerbils showed no clinical signs of disease; however, gerbils exposed to 1,000 and 4,000 B. transfuga eggs showed severe neurologic signs at 22-29 days and 14-15 days pi, respectively. Histopathologic examination revealed larvae and lesions in the intestine, lung, liver, and m
