Impaired Driving Performance as Evidence of a Magnocellular Deficit in Dyslexia and Visual Stress.

High comorbidity and an overlap in symptomology have been demonstrated between dyslexia and visual stress. Several researchers have hypothesized an underlying or causal influence that may account for this relationship. The magnocellular theory of dyslexia proposes that a deficit in visuo-temporal processing can explain symptomology for both disorders. If the magnocellular theory holds true, individuals who experience symptomology for these disorders should show impairment on a visuo-temporal task, such as driving. Eighteen male participants formed the sample for this study. Self-report measure

The development of a symptom questionnaire for assessing virtual reality viewing using a head-mounted display.

PURPOSE: Virtual reality devices, including virtual reality head-mounted displays, are becoming increasingly accessible to the general public as technological advances lead to reduced costs. However, there are numerous reports that adverse effects such as ocular discomfort and headache are associated with these devices. To investigate these adverse effects, questionnaires that have been specifically designed for other purposes such as investigating motion sickness have often been used. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a standard questionnaire for use in investigating symptoms t

Long-term refractive and phoric changes in visual display unit (VDU) operators.

PURPOSE: This study assessed the phoric and refractive changes possibly caused by visual display unit (VDU) activity. METHODS: In a longitudinal trial nearly 6000 VDU operators received two ophthalmological examinations at intervals ranging from 34 to 43 months. The findings from the two examinations were correlated to VDU work (hours daily and years of VDU work), age and sex. RESULTS: Changes in the refractive state seemed to be mainly age-related. There was a slight tendency toward hyperopia (imbalance of latent hyperopia). CONCLUSIONS: In the analysis of ocular motility, the results show

Efficacy of coloured lenses for patients diagnosed with visual stress.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Colour overlays and lenses are used to relieve symptoms in some patients diagnosed with visual stress, but evidence to support this practice is lacking. In this small randomised crossover trial, a range of colours are beneficial and precise colour specification does not enhance this effect. BACKGROUND: This randomised, double-masked crossover trial aimed to test effectiveness of precisely selected lens tints for visual stress. METHODS: Twenty-nine participants aged 11 to 72 (mean 30) years diagnosed with visual stress were issued with their selected coloured overlay then

How Do Different Digital Displays Affect the Ocular Surface?

SIGNIFICANCE: Digital display use has been accepted as a contributing factor to dry eye disease. Nowadays, plenty of new models of digital displays have been developed, and the differences in their nature and the ways in which they are set and used may contribute to differences in the eye-related problems they cause. PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the differences in ocular surface, tear film, and visual fatigue parameters after reading on different digital displays, with and without initial instillation of artificial tears. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy individuals ranging in age from 20

[Decreased reading speed and rapid fatigue as signs of disordered visual function].

Monocular and binocular reading curves of 20 patients (4 with cataract, 5 with glaucoma, 11 with maculopathy) were recorded by infrared oculography. Reading speed was found to be directly proportional to the visual acuity of the eye tested. However, the same visual acuity in both eyes does not always mean that the subject reads at the same speed with both eyes. For example, paracentral visual field defects impair reading ability and eyes which appear to have good vision may easily become tired. Twelve of 16 examined eyes with maculopathy showed a significant decrease in reading speed during a

The symptomatic patient with normal phorias at distance and near: what tests detect a binocular vision problem?

PURPOSE: Patients often manifest symptoms that appear to be related to binocular distress. Many of these patients have normal heterophoria at distance and near, making the etiology of such symptoms perplexing. We performed a visual examination of patients having normal heterophoria at distance and near in order to investigate which visual analysis tests differentiate symptomatic from asymptomatic patients. METHODS: Eighty subjects (30 symptomatic, 50 asymptomatic) with ages between 18 to 35 years of either sex and any race were pooled based on vision-symptom level determined by a 9-question s

Aniseikonia and anisometropia: implications for suppression and amblyopia.

Aniseikonia is a difference in the perceived size or shape of images between eyes, and can arise from a variety of physiological, neurological, retinal, and optical causes. Aniseikonia is associated with anisometropia, as both anisometropia itself and the optical correction for anisometropia can cause aniseikonia. Image size differences above one to three per cent can be clinically symptomatic. Common symptoms include asthenopia, headache and diplopia in vertical gaze. Size differences of three and more impair binocular visual functions such as binocular summation and stereopsis. Above five pe

Assessment of Visual Fatigue Caused by Eye-Controlled Interaction Based on Task Performance and Pupillary Response with GBDT-LR.

Assessing visual fatigue is crucial in eye-controlled interaction. Traditional methods are either overly subjective or rely on highly invasive, costly equipment and complex procedures that require expert supervision. This study proposes a machine-learning-based approach for visual fatigue assessment. Data collection employs non-intrusive, easily monitored eye-tracking to capture ocular eye movement data and task performance data, while subjective questionnaires label fatigue states. For feature selection, participant-level Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with Benjamini-Hochberg FDR correction were

An enhanced model for environmental dry eye: Exploring pathological features and underlying factors.

This study aimed to develop an enhanced environmental dry eye (EDE) model that accurately reproduces the etiology of prolonged visual fatigue and investigates the underlying pathological features. A total of 40 adult SPF-grade Wistar rats were randomly assigned to control (n = 20) and model (n = 20) groups. Rats in the control group were maintained under normal conditions, while rats in the model group were exposed to a controlled frontal airflow of 2-4 m/s from a fan for 7.5 h daily while placed on a suspended cylindrical wire mesh frame. Various assessments were performed at different time p

Sleep-related eye symptoms and their potential for identifying driver sleepiness.

The majority of individuals appear to have insight into their own sleepiness, but there is some evidence that this does not hold true for all, for example treated patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. Identification of sleep-related symptoms may help drivers determine their sleepiness, eye symptoms in particular show promise. Sixteen participants completed four motorway drives on two separate occasions. Drives were completed during daytime and night-time in both a driving simulator and on the real road. Ten eye symptoms were rated at the end of each drive, and compared with driving performan
