The Effect of Performance Training on Sideline Concussion Assessments in Adolescent Athletes: A Pilot Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: The vestibular ocular motor screen (VOMS) and the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 6 (SCAT6) are point-of-care concussion assessments administered immediately or soon after sports participation or exercise. To retain validity and accuracy, the results of these tests should not be affected by sporting activity. We assessed the effect on the mVOMS (modified VOMS) and SCAT6 immediately and 20 minutes after performance training in high school athletes. DESIGN: Nonrandomized pilot experimental study. SETTING: High School, Buffalo, NY. PARTICIPANTS: Nonconcussed athletes (n = 23, 39% m

Enhanced games and performance-optimized athletes: anticipating the orthopedic challenges, a narrative review.

The Enhanced Games (EG) represents a controversial shift in competitive athletics by removing anti-doping regulations and allowing the sanctioned use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in pursuit of maximum performance. This unprecedented model may fundamentally alter sports culture, competition standards, and the medical landscape in which athletes train and compete. Of particular concern are the potential consequences for orthopedic and musculoskeletal health, as PED use, particularly anabolic agents and growth factors, can both enhance and compromise musculoskeletal function. Potential b

Self-Reported Experiences of Interpersonal Violence Among High-Performance Athletes in Brazil.

Studies conducted in various countries have demonstrated that childhood interpersonal violence (IV), encompassing psychological, physical, sexual violence, and neglect, is a widespread issue in high-performance sports. However, research in this area has largely focused on countries in the Global North, and no prevalence studies have been conducted within Brazilian sport. This study examined the prevalence of childhood IV among high-performance athletes in Brazil, explored gender differences, and identified associated risk factors. A total of 857 high-performance Brazilian athletes completed th

Wireless Soft Athlete Bioelectronics for Monitoring Carbon Dioxide Ventilation and Physiological Performance.

Wearable devices have become essential tools for monitoring athletes' health and performance. However, most current devices are primarily designed to track physiological signals and physical indicators, which limits their ability to assess a comprehensive range of health parameters during exercise. Therefore, there is a need for a multimodal wearable platform that can capture diverse exercise-related metrics. Here, a wireless soft athlete bioelectronic system is presented that monitors various physiological signals and metabolites during exercise. This system includes a smart-sensing lip guard

Active motor-cognitive recovery supports reactive agility performance in trained athletes.

Active breaks are suggested to support recovery and performance in sports. Previous research in ball and team sports focused on motor performance such as repetitive sprinting or change of direction. This does not account for the interaction between motor and cognitive task demands in sports. Therefore, this study is the first to investigate the effectiveness of an active motor-cognitive break to support reactive agility performance. Twenty (7 female and 13 male) healthy trained young adults (mean age: 26 years) performed an active or passive 5 min break following a fatiguing protocol of six 10

Examining the Relationship between Pes Planus Degree, Balance and Jump Performances in Athletes.

The foot absorbs shocks with its arches, muscles, ligaments and joints, and bodyweight transmission and it pushes the body forward during all movement patterns. Pes planus is more important in sports activities that include balance and sports performance, such as walking, running, jumping, or transferring weight to a single lower limb. This study, conducted with this information in mind, aims to examine the effects of pes planus deformity on balance and vertical jump performance. Fifty athletes were included in the study. The presence of pes planus was evaluated according to the Feiss line. Ba

Cardiovascular Causes of Poor Performance and Exercise Intolerance and Assessment of Safety in the Equine Athlete.

Horses have a high prevalence of resting arrhythmias, cardiac murmurs, and valvular regurgitation, and training can increase the prevalence. This makes it challenging for equine veterinarians who are asked to evaluate horses for poor performance to determine the clinical relevance of some findings. In addition, cardiac disease has the potential to cause collapse or sudden death, putting both the horse and rider at risk. Further diagnostics, such as echocardiograms and resting and exercising ECGs can help to sort out the impact of an abnormality found on resting physical examination. However un
