A battery of audiological tests for retrocochlear disorders was performed of 79 cases with localized intracranial lesions confirmed surgically or neurologically. The Type III trace of Békésy audiometry was found to originate from pathologies in the brainstem and the Type IV from abnormalities in the first neuron of the VIIIth nerve or in the brainstem. It was suggested that an unusually large amplitude peak in the Békésy tracing indicates a lesion in the temporal lobe. Large values of differential limen for short increment (DLSI) were found in patients with brainstem lesions. A good speech dis

We report on two patients who showed absence of auditory brainstem response (ABR) but broad compound action potentials on electrocochleograms and almost normal otoacoustic emissions, together with absence of caloric response and preservation of per rotatory nystagmus for both ears. Patient 1, a 53-year-old woman, had noted auditory and vestibular problems since the age of 15 years, and Patient 2, a 68-year-old woman, had noted problems of the same age of 30 years. They could hear words and understand sentences if spoken slowly, but they could not discriminate monosyllables very well. Their aud

Tone threshold, SISI-test, Langenbeck test, Békésy audiometry, tympanometry, acoustico-facial reflex, speech audiometry and dichotic discrimination test were performed in a selected group of 252 patients. Statistical analysis demonstrated that those forms of hearing which are generally considered to be presbyacusis are sensory hearing impairments and not neural ones (as previously considered). These peripheral functional disorders, particularly those which occur in older individuals, derive from preceding injury as well as intercurrent or chronic diseases of the inner ear which may be coincide

OBJECTIVES: For decades, monosyllabic word-recognition in quiet (WRQ) has been the default test of speech recognition in routine audiologic assessment. The continued use of WRQ scores is noteworthy in part because difficulties understanding speech in noise (SIN) is perhaps the most common complaint of individuals with hearing loss. The easiest way to integrate SIN measures into routine clinical practice would be for SIN to replace WRQ assessment as the primary test of speech perception. To facilitate this goal, we predicted classifications of WRQ scores from the QuickSIN signal to noise ratio

Thirteen patients with Meniere's disorder were tested using transtympanic electrocochleography during glycerol dehydration. The most common finding was a decrease in the negative summating potential and this appeared to be a more sensitive indicator of changes occurring in the cochlea than pure tone audiometry and speech discrimination. A pathophysiological explanation for this observation is offered and the possibility of using this decrease in the negative summating potential as a pointer to the prognosis of endolymphatic sac surgery is discussed.

BACKGROUND Congenital cholesteatoma is a relatively rare condition accounting for about 2% to 5% of all cholesteatomas. Congenital cholesteatomas pose a significant challenge to treat. Failure to detect cholesteatoma early can lead to progressive and severe damage to middle ear structures, resulting in hearing loss. If conventional hearing aids are not a viable option, a bone conduction implant may be considered. One of the most successful is the Bonebridge implant, designed for adults and children with conductive or mixed hearing loss. The aim of this study was to analyze the surgical implica

Introduction Oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum, also referred to as Goldenhar syndrome, is a condition characterized by alterations involving the development of the structures of the first and second branchial arches. The abnormalities primarily affect the face, the eyes, the spine, and the ears, and the auricular abnormalities are associated with possible hearing loss. Objective To analyze the audiological findings of patients with oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum through liminal pure-tone audiometry and speech audiometry test. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted on 10 patients with ocul

INTRODUCTION: It is recommended that a stapedotomy be performed under local anaesthesia to enable intraoperative monitoring of hearing and vestibular function. In contrast, we prefer to carry out stapedotomies under general anesthesia. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this practice has an adverse effect on hearing results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: All stapedotomies performed in our department between May 2003 and February 2012 were included in the analysis. Revision surgery was excluded. All interventions were performed under general anesthesia with an endotracheal tube by the sa

Discrimination loss in the speech-audiogram (one-syllable test) was tested on 61 patients with cerebrovascular disease due to extracranial vessel stenosis in the area of the carotid artery distribution. In 44 of the patients (extracranial vessel stenosis or occlusion) the results were compared with the carotid angiogram and Doppler ultrasonography. There was agreement between loss of discrimination, localisation by angiography, ultrasound results and the relevant clinical findings in 32 of 36 patients. In 17 patients audiometry was performed before and after surgical reconstruction of the inte

This guideline has been well thought out, and is a useful basis for the general practitioner to diagnose and manage hearing loss. However, it advises watchful waiting in children with otitis media, a questionable view. In evaluating simple diagnostic tools, the speech recognition is overvalued at the expense of audiometry and the tuning-fork test. Posttraumatic perforation of the eardrum, in combination with hearing loss is incorrectly presented as a self-limiting problem in the majority of cases.

Cochlear synaptopathy refers to a subclinical hearing pathology which could potentially explain hearing difficulties within the normal hearing threshold; it is also called "hidden hearing loss". We hypothesized that a temporary threshold shift in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) also affects the function in the synapse. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of cochlear synaptopathy in patients who had completely recovered from unilateral SSNHL Nineteen patients who had completely recovered from ISSNHL from January 2018 to June 2021 were assessed. Complete recovery was est

Auditory neuropathy is characterized by mild-to-moderate pure-tone hearing loss, poor speech discrimination out of proportion with this loss, absent or abnormal auditory brainstem responses and normal outer hair cell function as measured by otoacoustic emissions and cochlear microphonics. We followed three patients in our clinic whom we classified as auditory neuropathy patients. These patients also complained of balance disorders and we report our auditory and vestibular system analyses of these patients. The data presented herein include results of audiometric tests (serial pure-tone audiome

INTRODUCTION: Ototoxicity associated with platinum-based chemotherapy is highly prevalent and can cause detrimental consequences among cancer survivors.
DISCUSSION: In this article, we highlight important aspects of the evaluation of ototoxicity with the aim to increase awareness of Oncologists in this regard. Standard pure tone audiometry alone is inadequate for this context. Comprehensive and consistent hearing tests should be implemented in a monitoring and surveillance program. High-frequency audiometry (10-16 kHz) is a sensitive tool in the detection of ototoxic hearing loss at onset. In

Roughness is a sound quality that has been related to the amplitude modulation characteristics of the acoustic stimulus. Roughness also is considered one of the primary elements of voice quality associated with natural variations across normal voices and is a salient feature of many dysphonic voices. It is known that the roughness of tonal stimuli is dependent on the frequency and depth of amplitude modulation and on the carrier frequency. Here, it is determined if similar dependencies exist for voiced speech stimuli. Knowledge of such dependencies can lead to a better understanding of the aco

The purpose of this study was the examination of 60 children with Down's syndrome with particular attention paid to the organ of hearing. The investigation included anamnesis concerning the risk factors of hearing loss, psychomotoric development, otolaryngological examination, pure tone, impedance and speech audiometry. The main conclusion is: hearing impairment is more frequent in children with Down's syndrome (82.8%) than in normal population (0.5-2%). The type of hearing impairment is mainly conductive and mild degree.

The contraction of the stapedius muscle results in a frequency dependant attenuation of sound through the middle ear. Idiopathic facial nerve paralysis (Bell's palsy) usually results in a paralysis of the stapedius muscle. This prospective study included 119 patients presenting with Bell's palsy over an 18-month period. After applying exclusion criteria, 80 patients with normal pure-tone audiograms underwent speech audiometry. This was performed on presentation and after recovery of the facial nerve palsy. Fifty-six patients (70%) with an absent stapedius reflex showed marked 'roll-over' from
