Cortical and thalamic connectivity to the second auditory cortex of the cat is resilient to the onset of deafness.

It has been well established that following sensory loss, cortical areas that would normally be involved in perceiving stimuli in the absent modality are recruited to subserve the remaining senses. Despite this compensatory functional reorganization, there is little evidence to date for any substantial change in the patterns of anatomical connectivity between sensory cortices. However, while many auditory areas are contracted in the deaf, the second auditory cortex (A2) of the cat undergoes a volumetric expansion following hearing loss, suggesting this cortical area may demonstrate a region-sp

Paired Associative Stimulation of the Temporal Cortex: Effects on the Auditory Steady-State Response.

BACKGROUND: Paired associative stimulation (PAS) is the repeated combination of a sensory stimulus with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in close temporal association. Recently, a study demonstrated that PAS of an auditory stimulus together with TMS of the temporal cortex is capable of changing the amplitude of auditory evoked potentials (AEP). OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of tone duration and habituation in temporal cortex PAS as elicited by 40 and 20 Hz amplitude modulated auditory steady-state responses (aSSR). METHODS: Eighteen subjects participated in two experime

Expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the auditory cortex of rats with salicylate-induced tinnitus.

Tinnitus often results in severe psychological distress. The present study hypothesized that tinnitus acts as a chronic stressor and induces dysregulation of the production of cytokines. The gap pre‑pulse inhibition of acoustic startle paradigm was applied to test tinnitus‑like behavior in rats. Following this, the mRNA and protein expression levels of interferon (IFN)‑γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‑α, interleukin (IL)‑6 and N‑methyl D‑aspartate receptor subunit 2A (NR2A) were measured in rats subjected to acute and chronic salicylate treatment, using reverse transcription‑quantitative polymer

Thalamic connections of the core auditory cortex and rostral supratemporal plane in the macaque monkey.

In the primate auditory cortex, information flows serially in the mediolateral dimension from core, to belt, to parabelt. In the caudorostral dimension, stepwise serial projections convey information through the primary, rostral, and rostrotemporal (AI, R, and RT) core areas on the supratemporal plane, continuing to the rostrotemporal polar area (RTp) and adjacent auditory-related areas of the rostral superior temporal gyrus (STGr) and temporal pole. In addition to this cascade of corticocortical connections, the auditory cortex receives parallel thalamocortical projections from the medial gen

Evidence for differential modulation of primary and nonprimary auditory cortex by forward masking in tinnitus.

It has been proposed that tinnitus is generated by aberrant neural activity that develops among neurons in tonotopic of regions of primary auditory cortex (A1) affected by hearing loss, which is also the frequency region where tinnitus percepts localize (Eggermont and Roberts 2004; Roberts et al., 2010, 2013). These models suggest (1) that differences between tinnitus and control groups of similar age and audiometric function should depend on whether A1 is probed in tinnitus frequency region (TFR) or below it, and (2) that brain responses evoked from A1 should track changes in the tinnitus per

Failed stabilization for long-term potentiation in the auditory cortex of FMR1 knockout mice.

Fragile X syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects sensory systems. A null mutation of the Fragile X Mental Retardation protein 1 (Fmr1) gene in mice has varied effects on developmental plasticity in different sensory systems, including normal barrel cortical plasticity, altered ocular dominance plasticity and grossly impaired auditory frequency map plasticity. The mutation also has different effects on long-term synaptic plasticity in somatosensory and visual cortical neurons, providing insights on how it may differentially affect the sensory systems. Here we present evidence that lo

Functional and structural aspects of tinnitus-related enhancement and suppression of auditory cortex activity.

The steady-state auditory evoked magnetic field was recorded in tinnitus patients and controls, both either musicians or non-musicians, all of them with high-frequency hearing loss. Stimuli were AM-tones with two modulation frequencies and three carrier frequencies matching the "audiometric edge", i.e. the frequency above which hearing loss increases more rapidly, the tinnitus frequency or the frequency 1 1/2 octaves above the audiometric edge in controls, and a frequency 1 1/2 octaves below the audiometric edge. Stimuli equated in carrier frequency, but differing in modulation frequency, were

Temporal processing in inferior colliculus and auditory cortex affected by high doses of salicylate.

Speech recognition and language learning can be affected by both peripheral and central auditory system impairment. However, whether sensorineural hearing loss would affect central auditory processing is not clear. Recent studies found that salicylate not only affects outer hair cell motility in the cochlea, but also blocks GABAergic neuron activities in central nervous systems. This provides a good animal model to evaluate the role of sensorineural hearing loss and central inhibition in auditory temporal processing. In this study, gap prepulse inhibition (gap-PPI) of the acoustic startle refl

Representation and integration of auditory and visual stimuli in the primate ventral lateral prefrontal cortex.

Through the influence of Goldman-Rakic, much research has been focused on the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in spatial working memory, decision making, and saccade generation, whereas functions of other parts of the frontal lobe including the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) are less clear. Previous studies in non-human primates have shown that some VLPFC cells are selectively responsive to faces. Recent findings indicate that adjacent to the region where face- and object-selective cells have been recorded are neurons which respond to complex sounds including human and monk

Encoding of learned importance of sound by magnitude of representational area in primary auditory cortex.

We hypothesized that learning-induced representational expansion in the primary auditory cortex (AI) directly encodes the degree of behavioral importance of a sound. Rats trained on an operant auditory conditioning task were variably motivated to the conditioned stimulus (CS) through different levels of water deprivation. Mean performance values correlated with deprivation level, validating them as a measure of the overall control and, therefore, behavioral importance of the CS. Electrophysiological mapping revealed expanded representations of the CS, compared with other frequencies in experim

fMRI of the auditory cortex in patients with unilateral carotid artery steno-occlusive disease.

PURPOSE: To examine whether an internal carotid artery (ICA) steno-occlusive disease leads to a reduced blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD)-signal change due to a decreased vasodilatory reserve capacity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients suffering from unilateral ICA stenosis or occlusion were examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the auditory cortex with a bilateral stimulation applying a pulsed 1000 Hz sine-tone. RESULTS: Compared to control subjects, who showed symmetric bilateral BOLD-responses within the auditory cortex, the ICA patients revealed either a nor

Spontaneous and stimulus-evoked intrinsic optical signals in primary auditory cortex of the cat.

Spontaneous and tone-evoked changes in light reflectance were recorded from primary auditory cortex (A1) of anesthetized cats (barbiturate induction, ketamine maintenance). Spontaneous 0.1-Hz oscillations of reflectance of 540- and 690-nm light were recorded in quiet. Stimulation with tone pips evoked localized reflectance decreases at 540 nm in 3/10 cats. The distribution of patches "activated" by tones of different frequencies reflected the known tonotopic organization of auditory cortex. Stimulus-evoked reflectance changes at 690 nm were observed in 9/10 cats but lacked stimulus-dependent t

Inhibitory effect of tDCS on auditory evoked response: Simultaneous MEG-tDCS reveals causal role of right auditory cortex in pitch learning.

A body of literature has demonstrated that the right auditory cortex (AC) plays a dominant role in fine pitch processing. However, our understanding is relatively limited about whether this asymmetry extends to perceptual learning of pitch. There is also a lack of causal evidence regarding the role of the right AC in pitch learning.  We addressed these points with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), adapting a previous behavioral study in which anodal tDCS over the right AC was shown to block improvement of a microtonal pitch pattern learning task over 3 days. To address the

Case Report: Low-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex and Auditory Cortex in a Patient With Tinnitus and Depression.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been widely used as a promising therapy for tinnitus. However, the exact target and stimulation sequence of rTMS that is most effective for treating tinnitus remains unclear. Here, we report a case of a 62-year-old man with treatment-refractory tinnitus and depression whose symptoms markedly improved after undergoing low-frequency rTMS over the right-side dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left auditory cortex area. Our report indicates that low-frequency rTMS treatment that stimulates multiple brain regions sequentially is feasible and m

Mapping an intrinsic MR property of gray matter in auditory cortex of living humans: a possible marker for primary cortex and hemispheric differences.

Recently, magnetic resonance properties of cerebral gray matter have been spatially mapped--in vivo--over the cortical surface. In one of the first neuroscientific applications of this approach, this study explores what can be learned about auditory cortex in living humans by mapping longitudinal relaxation rate (R1), a property related to myelin content. Gray matter R1 (and thickness) showed repeatable trends, including the following: (1) Regions of high R1 were always found overlapping posteromedial Heschl's gyrus. They also sometimes occurred in planum temporale and never in other parts of

Convolutional neural network models describe the encoding subspace of local circuits in auditory cortex.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) provide powerful models of neural sensory encoding, but their complexity makes it difficult to discern computations that support their performance. Here, to address this limitation, we developed a linear-nonlinear subspace model that identifies the most informative sensory dimensions captured by a CNN. A CNN was trained on single-neuron data recorded from auditory cortex of ferrets during presentation of a large natural sound set. Each neuron's linear tuning subspace was computed by applying dimensionality reduction to the gradient of CNN output relative to

David Ferrier's second monkey ('monkey F'): The inaugural experimental studies of the auditory cortex.

The story of David Ferrier's demonstration at the International Medical Congress in London in August 1881 of a monkey experimentally rendered hemiplegic by a focal surgical brain lesion-prompting Charcot's observation, "C'est un malade!"-is well known as a seminal event in the history of the localization of functions in the cerebral cortex. Less well known is the fact that, on the same occasion, Ferrier demonstrated a second monkey, known as monkey F, apparently deaf as a consequence of bilateral temporo-sphenoidal brain lesions. The purpose of this article is, first, to give a chronological a

Attention-Driven Modulation of Auditory Cortex Activity during Selective Listening in a Multispeaker Setting.

Real-world listening settings often consist of multiple concurrent sound streams. To limit perceptual interference during selective listening, the auditory system segregates and filters the relevant sensory input. Previous work provided evidence that the auditory cortex is critically involved in this process and selectively gates attended input toward subsequent processing stages. We studied at which level of auditory cortex processing this filtering of attended information occurs using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a naturalistic selective listening task. Forty-five human l

Oscillatory Waveform Shape and Temporal Spike Correlations Differ across Bat Frontal and Auditory Cortex.

Neural oscillations are associated with diverse computations in the mammalian brain. The waveform shape of oscillatory activity measured in the cortex relates to local physiology and can be informative about aberrant or dynamically changing states. However, how waveform shape differs across distant yet functionally and anatomically related cortical regions is largely unknown. In this study, we capitalize on simultaneous recordings of local field potentials (LFPs) in the auditory and frontal cortices of awake, male Carollia perspicillata bats to examine, on a cycle-by-cycle basis, waveform shap

Acute and Long-Term Circuit-Level Effects in the Auditory Cortex After Sound Trauma.

Harmful environmental sounds are a prevailing source of chronic hearing impairments, including noise induced hearing loss, hyperacusis, or tinnitus. How these symptoms are related to pathophysiological damage to the sensory receptor epithelia and its effects along the auditory pathway, have been documented in numerous studies. An open question concerns the temporal evolution of maladaptive changes after damage and their manifestation in the balance of thalamocortical and corticocortical input to the auditory cortex (ACx). To address these issues, we investigated the loci of plastic reorganizat
