Long latency evoked potentials in a case of corpus callosum agenesia.

Following monoaural stimulation, long latency auditory evoked potentials (LLAEPs) recorded from contralateral temporal areas have a shorter latency and larger amplitude than those recorded from the ipsilateral temporal areas. This observation agrees with the operational model drawn up in 1967 by Kimura, which assumes that only anatomically prevailing crossed auditory pathways are active during dichotic hearing, while direct pathways are inhibited. The inputs may then be conveyed to the contralateral cortex, from where they finally reach the ipsilateral temporal areas by means of interhemispher

Middle Latency Auditory Evoked Potential (MLAEP) in Workers with and without Tinnitus who are Exposed to Occupational Noise.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is an important occupational health concern, but few studies have focused on the central auditory pathways of workers with a history of occupational noise exposure. Thus, we analyzed the central auditory pathways of workers with a history of occupational noise exposure who had normal hearing threshold, and compared middle latency auditory evoked potential in those with and without noise-induced tinnitus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty individuals (30 with and 30 without tinnitus) underwent the following procedures: anamnesis, immittance measures, pure-tone air conduction thr

Aging of the auditory system.

Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss (ARHL) affects most elderly people. It is characterized by reduced hearing thresholds and speech understanding with the well-known negative consequences for communication and quality of social life. The hearing loss is connected to age-related histologic changes, as described and classified by Schuknecht. Aging itself is a multifactorial, genetically driven process that is influenced by oxidative stress that gradually leads to reduced endocochlear potential and cell loss of key players in sound transmission and supporting structures. Oxidative stress is

Central auditory processing in children after traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury can impair the central auditory pathways and auditory cortex. Hence, individuals who suffered a traumatic brain injury may be at risk of central auditory processing disorders, which can be identified with behavioral tests that assess central auditory function. OBJECTIVE: To characterize and compare the performance of children and adolescents with and without a history of traumatic brain injury in behavioral tests that assess central auditory processing. METHOD: The sample comprised 8- to 18-year-old individuals of both sexes who suffered moderate or sever

Magno and parvo stimuli affect illusory directional hearing in normal and dyslexic readers.

In an experimental paradigm adapted from Hari (1995), forty observers listened via headphones to 8 binaural clicks: 4 left-ear leading followed by 4 right-ear leading with either 38 or 140 ms interstimulus intervals (ISIs). Concurrently, they viewed either foveal or peripheral visual stimuli designed to activate either the parvocellular or magnocellular pathway. They then reported the perceived location of each click-pair. Our results replicated Hari's finding that observers mistake the perceived location of short ISI click-pairs more often than long. That is, when ISIs were short, the sounds

Slicing the Embryonic Chicken Auditory Brainstem to Evaluate Tonotopic Gradients and Microcircuits.

The chicken embryo is a widely accepted animal model to study the auditory brainstem, composed of highly specialized microcircuitry and neuronal topology differentially oriented along a tonotopic (i.e., frequency) axis. The tonotopic axis permits the segregated encoding of high-frequency sounds in the rostral-medial plane and low-frequency encoding in caudo-lateral regions. Traditionally, coronal brainstem slices of embryonic tissue permit the study of relative individual iso-frequency lamina. Although sufficient to investigate anatomical and physiological questions pertaining to individual is

Ipsilateral auditory cortex responses to the intact ear after unilateral noise trauma in juvenile rats.

BACKGROUND: While ear stimulation produces a robust response in the contralateral auditory cortex (AC), it produces only a weak response in the ipsilateral AC, known as interhemispheric asymmetry. Unilateral deafness can lead to AC plastic changes, resulting in reduced interhemispheric asymmetry and auditory perceptual consequences. However, the unilateral hearing loss-associated plastic changes are far from fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate AC responses to the ipsilateral unimpaired ear after noise injury to the contralateral ear in juvenile rats. METHODS: Rats (

The evaluation of tinnitus and auditory brainstem response in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo accompanied by tinnitus.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate auditory brainstem response (ABR) in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) accompanied by tinnitus and to suggest possible interpretative hypotheses. METHODS: Ninety individuals were included in the study. Individuals were separated into three groups: patients reporting tinnitus with BPPV (Group I), patients with BPPV (Group II), and a control group. The ABR test was applied at a low and at a high rate. RESULTS: For patients reporting tinnitus with BPPV, tinnitus was found to be localized in the ear affected by BPPV. Tinnit

Auditory thalamic reticular nucleus of the rat: anatomical nodes for modulation of auditory and cross-modal sensory processing in the loop connectivity between the cortex and thalamus.

The auditory sector of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) plays a pivotal role in gain and/or gate control of auditory input relayed from the thalamus to cortex. The TRN is also likely involved in cross-modal sensory processing for attentional gating function. In the present study, we anatomically examined how cortical and thalamic afferents intersect in the auditory TRN with regard to these two functional pathways. Iontophoretic injections of biocytin into subregions of the auditory TRN, which were made with the guidance of electrophysiological recording of auditory response, resulted in re

[Topodiagnostic ERA results at a female patient with multiple sclerosis in the brainstem (author's transl)].

At a female patient suffering from multiple sclerosis with demyelinisation mainly in the pontine and mesencephalic tegmentum, the five early potentials consisting of the compound action potential of the acoustic nerve (Pot. I) and the four brainstem potentials (Pot. II-V) as well as the slow evoked vertex-potential were registered. The threshold behaviour, the characteristic curve and the latency curve of all potentials were obtained, and thereby damages of the central acoustic pathways found out. A topodiagnostic is tried by means of the alterations of the peripheral and central ERA, and by m

Crossmodal plasticity in core auditory cortex following deafness: An evaluation of evidence for and against.

Over the past few decades, a great deal of evidence from studies of humans and animal models has demonstrated crossmodal plasticity in higher-order auditory cortical areas of the deaf. However, whether crossmodal plasticity occurs in core auditory cortex following deafness remains controversial. This review critically examines evidence for and against crossmodal plasticity in core auditory cortex following deafness in both humans and animals. First, we define core auditory cortex and discuss evidence for crossmodal inputs to these regions during normal development. Then, neuroanatomical and fu

Tinnitus mechanisms and the need for an objective electrophysiological tinnitus test.

Tinnitus, the perception of sound with no external auditory stimulus, is a complex, multifaceted, and potentially devastating disorder. Despite recent advances in our understanding of tinnitus, there are limited options for effective treatment. Tinnitus treatments are made more complicated by the lack of a test for tinnitus based on objectively measured physiological characteristics. Such an objective test would enable a greater understanding of tinnitus mechanisms and may lead to faster treatment development in both animal and human research. This review makes the argument that an objective t

Neural activity in speech-sensitive auditory cortex during silence.

That auditory hallucinations are voices heard in the absence of external stimuli implies the existence of endogenous neural activity within the auditory cortex responsible for their perception. Further, auditory hallucinations occur across a range of healthy and disease states that include reduced arousal, hypnosis, drug intoxication, delirium, and psychosis. This suggests that, even in health, the auditory cortex has a propensity to spontaneously "activate" during silence. Here we report the findings of a functional MRI study, designed to examine baseline activity in speech-sensitive auditory

Perceptual auditory gap detection deficits in male BXSB mice with cerebrocortical ectopias.

Underlying impairments in rapid auditory processing may contribute to disrupted phonological processing, which in turn characterizes developmental language impairment (LI). Identification of a neurobiological feature of LI that is associated with auditory deficits would further support this model. Accordingly, we found that adult male rats with induced cortical malformations were impaired in rapid auditory processing. Since 40-60% of BXSB mice exhibit spontaneous focal cerebrocortical ectopias (as seen in dyslexics brains), we assessed auditory gap detection in adult male BXSB mice. Ectopic mi

Noise-induced degeneration in the brain and representation of inner and outer hair cells.

Noise that destroys receptor cells in the chinchilla cochlea also results in degeneration of axonal endings in the brain from the cochlear nerve fibers and the auditory pathways ascending to the superior olivary complex and inferior colliculus. The patterns of degeneration provide experimental evidence for differential representation of inner and outer hair cells and their functions.

Unilateral hearing losses alter loud sound-induced temporary threshold shifts and efferent effects in the normal-hearing ear.

In animals with bilaterally normal hearing, olivocochlear pathways can protect the cochlea from the temporary shifts in hearing sensitivity (temporary threshold shifts; TTSs) caused by short-duration intense loud sounds. The crossed olivocochlear pathway provides protection during binaural loud sound, and uncrossed pathways protect when monaural or binaural loud sounds occur in noise backgrounds. Here I demonstrate that when there is a chronic unilateral hearing loss, effects of loud sounds, and efferent effects on loud sound, in the normal-hearing ear differ markedly from normal. Auditory dysfunction in stroke.

The auditory and vestibular systems share the same end organ and cranial nerve, yet vestibular signs and symptoms are common with stroke, whereas hearing disturbances are much less frequent. Several reasons would appear to account for this striking dissimilarity. One is that the auditory pathway is less ubiquitous than the vestibular pathways. The likelihood that a stroke involves the auditory pathway is, therefore, less on this basis alone. A second difference, to our knowledge not previously reported, is that the auditory pathway is often spared by the most common strokes. This is because ma

Auditory brainstem response: An overview of neurophysiological implications and clinical applications -A Narrative Review.

Evoked Potentials are electrical potentials that occur in a group of neurons in response to stimulation of a sensory organ which can be recorded by surface electrodes. Testing evoked potentials is useful in assessing the integrity of neuronal pathways both at sensory and motor levels of neural control. Early auditory evoked potentials include cochlear and brainstem auditory-evoked potentials, popularly known as electrocochleogram, and auditory brainstem response. Evoked potential audiometry is a neurophysiogical test to assess auditory pathway function in response to auditory stimuli. Auditory

Modelling homeostatic plasticity in the auditory cortex results in neural signatures of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a clinical condition where a sound is perceived without an external sound source. Homeostatic plasticity (HSP), serving to increase neural activity as compensation for the reduced input to the auditory pathway after hearing loss, has been proposed as a mechanism underlying tinnitus. In support, animal models of tinnitus show evidence of increased neural activity after hearing loss, including increased spontaneous and sound-driven firing rate, as well as increased neural noise throughout the auditory processing pathway. Bridging these findings to human tinnitus, however, has proven
