INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by heterogeneity in presentation. In recent decades, ASD prevalence has risen globally, yet data from non-Western and middle-income countries, including Russia, remain scarce. Thus, Russian official statistics report a prevalence of 0.41 per 1,000 (0.041%), far below global estimates of 32.2 per 1,000 (3.2%), indicating underdiagnosis. This study provides the first population-based estimate of ASD prevalence among Russian elementary school children and examines barriers to diagnosis and treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive behaviors, now affecting approximately 1 in 31 children. While traditionally defined behaviorally, ASD is increasingly understood as a disorder of brain connectivity arising from altered synaptic formation and refinement. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on neuroimmune dysregulation in ASD, focusing on immune-mediated synaptic pruning mechanisms. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2010-2026), prioritizing hig

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to rise in the United States, and many affected children have highly selective diets and sensory-driven food aversions that increase the risk of micronutrient deficiencies. In low-resource settings, food insecurity and limited access to autism evaluation and supportive services may further heighten this risk. At our urban tertiary pediatric center, we have diagnosed severe nutritional rickets in a number of children and adolescents with ASD and restrictive diets. This case series describes the clinical, metabolic, and ortho

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. In addition, individuals diagnosed with ASD may also present cognitive impairments. The neurobiological mechanisms possibly associated with the cause of ASD have not yet been fully elucidated. Studies suggest that brain alterations, especially in the cerebellum, play a fundamental role in the etiology of ASD. This brain region, traditionally associated with motor control, has been implicated in several cognitive and emotional

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with a higher prevalence of oral health problems, including parafunctional habits and malocclusions, which may lead to increased orthodontic treatment needs. The objective of this study was to evaluate orthodontic disorders and treatment requirements in children with ASD compared to their neurotypical peers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 148 children aged 3-12 years, including 74 children with ASD and 74 controls matched for age and sex. Data were collected via caregiver questionnaires and clinical dental e

Background/Objectives: An important new consideration when studying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the bioenergetic mechanisms underlying the relatively recent rapid evolutionary expansion of the human brain, which pose fundamental risks for mitochondrial dysfunction and calcium signaling abnormalities and their potential role in ASD, as recently highlighted by insights from the BTBR mouse model of ASD. The rapid brain expansion taking place as Homo sapiens evolved, particularly in the parietal lobe, led to increased energy demands, making the brain vulnerable to such metabolic disruptions

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) can manifest as xerophthalmia, a spectrum of eye conditions ranging from night blindness to severe outcomes like keratomalacia and corneal scarring. We report two cases of a seven-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy in Japan with xerophthalmia caused by VAD associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The first case demonstrates severe complications of prolonged VAD, including optic disc edema and irreversible corneal damage, which then results in blindness. The second case identified and treated earlier in the stage of corneal xerosis shows favorable prognosis. T

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors, limited interests, and cognitive impairment. Especially, social deficit has been considered a core feature of ASD. Because of the limitations of the experimental approach in humans, valid animal models are essential in an effort to identify novel therapeutics for social deficits in ASD. The genetic and environmental factors are clinically relevant to the pathophysiology of ASD. Epidemiological studies demonstrate environmental interventions

BACKGROUND: RASopathies are associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) there is ample evidence for this increased risk, while for other RASopathies this association has been studied less. No specific ASD profile has been delineated so far for RASopathies or a specific RASopathy individually.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to investigate whether a specific RASopathy is associated with a specific ASD profile, or if RASopathies altogether have a distinct ASD profile compared to idiopathic ASD (iASD). We searched PubMed, Web

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 3% of school-age children. The core symptoms are deficits in social communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. Associated problems in cognition, language, behavior, sleep and mood are prevalent. Currently, no established pharmacological treatment exists for core ASD symptoms. Risperidone and aripiprazole are used to manage associated irritability, but their effectiveness is limited and adverse events are common.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder with onset in infancy or early childhood. Mendelian randomization (MR) is a statistical method used to infer causal relationships between exposures and outcomes. This article summarizes MR studies related to ASD. Existing research supports a causal relationship between maternal inflammatory bowel disease in children with ASD, parental education levels, screen time exposure, obesity, insomnia, serum transferrin, decreased blood selenium, abnormal signals in brain functional MRI, interleukin-6, phosphodiesterase 2A, mitoge

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is caused by combined genetic and environmental factors. Genetic heritability in ASD is estimated as 60-90%, and genetic investigations have revealed many monogenic factors. We analyzed 405 patients with ASD using family-based exome sequencing to detect disease-causing single-nucleotide variants (SNVs), small insertions and deletions (indels), and copy number variations (CNVs) for molecular diagnoses. All candidate variants were validated by Sanger sequencing or quantitative polymerase chain reaction and were evaluated using the American College of Medical Geneti

Brain network analysis is an effective method to seek abnormalities in functional interactions for brain disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Traditional studies of brain networks focus on the node-centric functional connectivity (nFC), ignoring interactions of edges to miss much information that facilitates diagnostic decisions. In this study, we present a protocol based on an edge-centric functional connectivity (eFC) approach, which significantly improves classification performance by utilizing the co-fluctuations information between the edges of brain regions compared with nFC

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies on the risk of childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) following fertility treatment did not account for the infertility itself or the mediating effect of obstetrical and neonatal factors.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between infertility and its treatments on the risk of ASD and the mediating effect of selected adverse pregnancy outcomes on that association.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada. Participants were all singleton and multifetal live births at 24 or more weeks' gestation from 2006 to

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disorders characterized by deficits in social communicative skills and the occurrence of repetitive and/or stereotyped behaviors. Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS) is classically characterized by aplasia or hypoplasia of the distal phalanx or nail of the fifth and additional digits, developmental or cognitive delay of varying degrees, distinctive facial features, hypotonia, hirsutism/hypertrichosis, and sparse scalp hair. In this study, we present a detailed description of autistic traits in a boy diagnosed with CSS and furt

The comorbidity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses is well established. An ASD diagnosis is associated with elevated ADHD traits and symptoms, as well as strengths in attention. In the ASD literature, attentional strengths have been described as maladaptive (e.g., hyperfocus), in contrast with positive portrayals in the typically developing population (e.g., flow). The objective of this study was to (1) compare profiles of attentional strengths and weaknesses in ASD and ADHD and (2) determine whether attentional strengths in ASD are

While behavioral interventions remain the mainstay of treatment of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), several potential targeted treatments addressing the underlying neurophysiology of ASD have emerged in the last few years. These are promising for the potential to, in future, become part of the mainstay treatment in addressing the core symptoms of ASD. Although it is likely that the development of future targeted treatments will be influenced by the underlying heterogeneity in etiology, associated genetic mechanisms influencing ASD are likely to be the first targets of treatments and even gene t

The phenotypic repercussion of ZDHHC15 haploinsufficiency is not well-known. This gene was initially suggested as a candidate for X-linked mental retardation, but such an association was later questioned. We studied a multiplex family with three members with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by array CGH, karyotype, exome sequencing and X-chromosome inactivation patterns. Medical history interviews, cognitive and physical examinations, and sensory profiling were also assessed. The three family members with ASD (with normal cognitive abilities and an abnormal sensory profile) were the only carrier

This study evaluated 32 children (mean age: 8.5 y) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 23 healthy controls (similar age, sex, and Tanner stage) for hyperandrogenism. These children underwent sexual maturity rating (Tanner staging), ASD severity assessment (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), and quantitative estimation for plasma testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and androstenedione. There was no significant difference in androgen levels in the two groups. Elevated (> 95 centiles) testosterone, DHEAS, and androstenedione levels were seen in 12.3%, 6.2%, and 9% children with
