An overview of mock interviews as a training tool for interviewers of children.

Mock (simulated) interviews can be used as a safe context for trainee interviewers to learn and practice questioning skills. When mock interviews are designed to reflect the body of scientific evidence on how questioning skills are best learned, research has demonstrated that interviewers acquire relevant and enduring skills. Despite the importance of this exercise in learning interview skill and its prevalence as a learning tool in other fields such as medicine and allied health, there has been relatively little discussion about mock interviews from an educational perspective in investigative

Shaping corticospinal pathways in virtual reality: effects of task complexity and sensory feedback during mirror therapy in neurologically intact individuals.

BACKGROUND: Restoration of limb function for individuals with unilateral weakness typically requires volitional muscle control, which is often not present for individuals with severe impairment. Mirror therapy-interventions using a mirror box to reflect the less-impaired limb onto the more-impaired limb-can facilitate corticospinal excitability, leading to enhanced recovery in severely impaired clinical populations. However, the mirror box applies limitations on mirror therapy, namely that all movements appear bilateral and are confined to a small area, impeding integration of complex activiti

EmoPoseFace: Head Pose Aware Speech-Driven 3D Emotional Facial Animation Using Latent Diffusion.

Speech-driven 3D facial animation has notable applications in the VR domain, including virtual anchors and digital avatars, etc. However, producing facial animations that convey complex emotional expressions remains a substantial challenge. Existing methods struggle to simultaneously achieve accurate lip synchronization, natural facial expressions, and realistic emotional representation. Significantly, the impact of head pose on boosting facial emotional expressiveness has not been thoroughly investigated. To address these issues, we propose EmoPoseFace, a novel Diffusion-based network to gene

Human peripheral nerve xenografts and rat peripheral nerve allografts implanted to the striatum: Methodology and initial findings of cell-based therapy.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve tissue engrafted into the central nervous system may provide regenerative effects in various CNS injury models or in a clinical trial using autologous sural nerve tissue grafts implanted into the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as an adjuvant to Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). NEW METHOD: We describe a proof-of-concept neuro-avatar animal model to inform ongoing and future clinical trials and study the survival, biodistribution, and host responses to allografts or xenografts of human peripheral nerve fascicles. Human peripheral nerve tissu

The use of motion tracking technology to support an exercise intervention for children and young people with cancer: perspectives of users and healthcare professionals in the FORTEe trial.

INTRODUCTION: Technological advances provide new approaches to improving oncology care. Research indicates that supportive technological tools can benefit children with cancer, and integrating technology into exercise-based interventions may enhance physical activity and reduce fatigue. The FORTEe clinical trial incorporated a motion tracking device (Pixformance) within a broader, individualised exercise intervention for children and young adults (CAYA) with cancer. The device used an inbuilt camera, avatar-led demonstrations, and real-time feedback on exercise form. This FORTEe sub-study expl

"I Dreamed of My Hands and Arms Moving Again": A Case Series Investigating the Effect of Immersive Virtual Reality on Phantom Limb Pain Alleviation.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a type of chronic pain that follows limb amputation, brachial plexus avulsion injury, or spinal cord injury. Treating PLP is a well-known challenge. Currently, virtual reality (VR) interventions are attracting increasing attention because they show promising analgesic effects. However, most previous studies of VR interventions were conducted with a limited number of patients in a single trial. Few studies explored questions such as how multiple VR sessions might affect pain over time, or if a patient's ability to move their phantom limb may affect their PLP. Here we

Development of the Virtual Physical Assessment Learning Material That Allows the Learners to Check Drug Efficacy and Early Detection of Adverse Effects through Virtual Experience.

We utilized the information and communication technology to develop the physical assessment (PA) learning materials in the virtual experience type. This learning material consists of two parts which include case learning and basic learning. We created example scenarios about various conditions that a pharmacist may experience in medical scenes such as in a hospital ward, community pharmacy, home, and drugstore. Illustrations of a virtual patient's avatar before and after taking the medicines were incorporated in the learning materials. The virtual training includes a stethoscope that was used

Bridging the translational gap in HNSCC immunotherapy: From resistance mechanisms to high-fidelity preclinical models.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains a therapeutic challenge, with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) benefiting only a minority of patients. This review addresses the translational gap between promising preclinical results and suboptimal clinical outcomes. We critically analyze biological resistance drivers, including the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, TGF-β-mediated exclusion, hypoxia-driven metabolic checkpoints (e.g., adenosine signaling), and the distinct immune landscapes of HPV-positive versus HPV-negative disease. We argue that conventional models, such as

"Self pop-out": agency enhances self-recognition in visual search.

In real-life situations, we are often required to recognize our own movements among movements originating from other people. In social situations, these movements are often correlated (for example, when dancing or walking with others) adding considerable difficulty to self-recognition. Studies from visual search have shown that visual attention can selectively highlight specific features to make them more salient. Here, we used a novel visual search task employing virtual reality and motion tracking to test whether visual attention can use efferent information to enhance self-recognition of on

Age-related patterns in the creation of social prediction models: a study using immersive virtual reality.

Exposure to environmental regularities allows individuals to build internal models, supporting the integration of prior expectations with sensory input in social contexts. However, how social prediction models develop across age and experience remains unclear. To address this, we investigated whether the formation of social predictive models varies across age and experiences in neurotypical individuals (early adolescents, young adults, and adults). Participants completed, in counterbalanced order, two scenarios of an immersive virtual reality (IVR) task that facilitates the creation of top-dow

Practice Makes Human: AI Conversation and Simulation as Deliberate Practice for Human Connection in CPD.

Future-ready continuing professional development (CPD) must integrate artificial intelligence without eroding the human relationships, empathy, and teamwork that underpin quality care. This brief report describes an immersive interactive AI-driven conversational simulation model that supports non-scripted encounters with lifelike avatars, followed by structured scoring and feedback, and repeated practice opportunities to rehearse difficult conversations with both colleagues and patients before they occur. Grounded in deliberate-practice theory, the approach is examined through the five Key The

Feasibility and Efficacy of a Virtual Reality Social Prediction Training in Children and Young Adults with Congenital Cerebellar Malformations.

This study tested the feasibility and efficacy of a Virtual Reality (VR) social prediction training (VR-Spirit) specifically designed for patients with congenital cerebellar malformation. The study is a randomised controlled trial in which 28 cerebellar patients aged 7-25 yo were randomly allocated to the VR-Spirit or to a control intervention in VR. The VR-Spirit required participants to compete with different avatars in scenarios that prompted them to form predictions about avatars' intentions. The control intervention consisted of games currently adopted for motor rehabilitation. Social pre

RSATalker: Realistic Socially-Aware Talking Head Generation for Multi-Turn Conversation.

Talking head generation is increasingly important in virtual reality (VR), especially for social scenarios involving multi-turn conversation. Existing approaches face notable limitations: mesh-based 3D methods can model dual-person dialogue but lack realistic textures, large-model-based 2D methods produce natural appearances but incur prohibitive computational costs. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS)-based methods achieve efficient and realistic rendering but remain speaker-only and ignore social relationships. We introduce RSATalker, the first framework that leverages 3DGS for realistic

Active Inference Modeling of Socially Shared Cognition in Virtual Reality.

This study proposes a process model for sharing ambiguous category concepts in virtual reality (VR) using an active inference framework. The model executes a dual-layer Bayesian update after observing both self and partner actions and predicts actions that minimize free energy. To incorporate agreement-seeking with others into active inference, we added disagreement in category judgments as a risk term in the free energy, weighted by gaze synchrony measured using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), which is assumed to reflect joint attention. To validate the model, an object classification task in VR

Oxytocin-induced modulation of explicit and implicit visual perspective taking.

Visual perspective taking (VPT) is a fundamental component of social cognition, allowing individuals to understand environments from diverse viewpoints. Explicit VPT involves deliberately adopting another person's perspective, whereas implicit VPT reflects the incidental influence of others' viewpoints when responding from one's own. Oxytocin (OT), a neuropeptide known for its role in social bonding, has been proposed to influence self-other processing, though its effects on VPT remain unclear. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, seventy-nine healthy male participants (Oxytocin = 39,

Investigating "Another Me" digital twin technology to support the development of human relationships: An exploratory randomized controlled study.

Social anxiety disorder has a considerable negative impact on educational attainment, employment status, and relationship development. Exposure therapy is an established method used to treat social anxiety by getting patients used to talking to other people. However, this procedure requires patients to have conversations with strangers, which may impose a psychological burden. This study aimed to examine whether the burden could be reduced during a first-time face-to-face interaction by using a human digital twin avatar technology that we call "Another Me." We conducted an exploratory, randomi

Applications of Virtual and Mixed Reality in Healthcare.

This chapter explores the increasingly influential role of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) in modern healthcare, focusing on their applications in therapeutic interventions, rehabilitation, and medical education. While one of the first viable applications of VR involved usage in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and phobias, these technologies have since expanded into a wide range of clinical applications. VR has proven particularly effective in exposure therapy, helping patients overcome anxiety disorders and phobias with a high degree

Ischiopagus and diprosopus in India: two pairs of conjoined twins perceived as incarnations of Hindu deities.

This article briefly reviews two specific types of conjoined twins, ischiopagus and diprosopus, and discusses recent cases of such twins born in India. Some members of the Hindu community worshiped these conjoined twins as incarnations of Hindu deities. In discussing this phenomenon, the authors aim to elucidate certain features of the faith tradition of Hinduism itself. The reception of these conjoined twins as incarnations of Hindu deities can be understood by examining two salient features of Hindu polytheism: the pictorial depiction of Hindu deities with multiple appendages and the concept

A Novel Mobile Tool (Somatomap) to Assess Body Image Perception Pilot Tested With Fashion Models and Nonmodels: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Distorted perception of one's body and appearance, in general, is a core feature of several psychiatric disorders including anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder and is operative to varying degrees in nonclinical populations. Yet, body image perception is challenging to assess, given its subjective nature and variety of manifestations. The currently available methods have several limitations including restricted ability to assess perceptions of specific body areas. To address these limitations, we created Somatomap, a mobile tool that enables individuals to visually represe
