Potential zoonotic rickettsiales bacteria associated with small mammals and their ectoparasites in africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The proximity of humans to small mammals and their ectoparasites at wildlife-human interfaces in Africa creates favorable conditions for the spillover of zoonotic pathogens. Anaplasmaceae and Rickettsiaceae bacteria are emerging threats due to their genomic adaptability and resilience to environmental changes. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the distribution and prevalence of these pathogens in African small mammals and their ectoparasites. A comprehensive search across five electronic databases yielded 37 studies meeting predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The most

Neglected tropical diseases in sub-saharan Africa: review of their prevalence, distribution, and disease burden.

The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are the most common conditions affecting the poorest 500 million people living in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and together produce a burden of disease that may be equivalent to up to one-half of SSA's malaria disease burden and more than double that caused by tuberculosis. Approximately 85% of the NTD disease burden results from helminth infections. Hookworm infection occurs in almost half of SSA's poorest people, including 40-50 million school-aged children and 7 million pregnant women in whom it is a leading cause of anemia. Schistosomiasis is the second

Presence of multidrug-resistant enteric bacteria in dairy farm topsoil.

In addition to human and veterinary medicine, antibiotics are extensively used in agricultural settings, such as for treatment of infections, growth enhancement, and prophylaxis in food animals, leading to selection of drug and multidrug-resistant bacteria. To help circumvent the problem of bacterial antibiotic resistance, it is first necessary to understand the scope of the problem. However, it is not fully understood how widespread antibiotic-resistant bacteria are in agricultural settings. The lack of such surveillance data is especially evident in dairy farm environments, such as soil. It

[Presence of antileptospira antibodies in ophidia in Argentina].

Sera obtained from 18 Bothrops alternatus and 2 Phylodrias burmeisteri were analyzed for the presence of antileptospiral antibodies using a microscopic agglutination test. Out of 18 Bothrops sera, 13 (72%) gave positive results. Snake serum reacted with patoc, andamana, wolffi, tarassovi, pomona, pyrogenes and shermani serovars. It can be concluded that Leptospiral antibodies are present in snake sera in Argentina, suggesting that the circulating antibodies may have an important role in the epizoothiology of the disease.

Rabies virus, Bartonella koehlerae and Leishmania infantum coinfection in a black Myotis (Myotis nigricans) from southeastern Brazil.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of important zoonotic agents in Brazil in urban bats and to evaluate the existence of coinfections in bats diagnosed with rabies. In 2021, organ samples from 52 bats from urban areas in southeastern Brazil were used to diagnose rabies and other zoonoses occurring in the region. The positive samples were sequenced, characterized and included in GenBank. A co-infection involving the rabies virus, Bartonella koehlerae, and Leishmania infantum was identified in a Black Myotis bat collected from a household in São Manuel, a city endemic for visc

Plasmid DNA Prime/Protein Boost Vaccination against Campylobacter jejuni in Broilers: Impact of Vaccine Candidates on Immune Responses and Gut Microbiota.

Campylobacter infections, traced to poultry products, are major bacterial foodborne zoonoses, and vaccination is a potential solution to reduce these infections. In a previous experimental trial using a plasmid DNA prime/recombinant protein boost vaccine regimen, two vaccine candidates (YP437 and YP9817) induced a partially protective immune response against Campylobacter in broilers, and an impact of the protein batch on vaccine efficacy was suspected. This new study was designed to evaluate different batches of the previously studied recombinant proteins (called YP437A, YP437P and YP9817P) a

Current perspectives on the occurrence of Q fever: highlighting the need for systematic surveillance for a neglected zoonotic disease in Indian subcontinent.

Coxiellosis or Q fever is an important global occupational zoonotic disease caused by one of the most contagious bacterial pathogens - Coxiella burnetii, which ranks one among the 13 global priority zoonoses. The detection of C. burnetii infection is exhibiting an increasing trend in high-risk personnel around the globe. It has increasingly been detected from foods of animal origin (including bulk milk, eggs, and meat) as well as tick vectors in many parts of the world. Coxiellosis is reported to be an important public health threat causing spontaneous abortions in humans and potential reprodu

First Molecular Detection of the Potential Zoonotic Pathogen Rickettsia asembonensis in Client-Owned Dogs and Cats in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsioses are predominantly zoonotic infections that circulate among animal populations and can be transmitted to humans, representing emerging vector-borne diseases spread through infected arthropod vectors. Rickettsia asembonensis displays a broad geographic distribution and is predominantly associated with fleas. Recent reports have identified R. asembonensis in febrile human patients in Malaysia, Peru, and Zambia, underscoring its emerging zoonotic potential. In Thailand, however, investigations of Rickettsia spp. have concentrated mainly on ticks and fleas, with comparat

Zoonotic infections due to avian Chlamydia abortus: what are we missing?

Chlamydia abortus is an obligate intracellular bacterium primarily affecting ruminants and causing reproductive failures in sheep and goats. As a recognised zoonotic pathogen, C abortus can cause obstetric and respiratory infections in humans, with severe consequences in pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. Previous studies have identified novel C abortus strains in avian species, closely related to the zoonotic Chlamydia psittaci, with some strains associated with cases of human pneumonia. In this Personal View, we review the evolving taxonomy of C abortus in light of these novel

Chlamydia psittaci: A zoonotic pathogen causing avian chlamydiosis and psittacosis.

Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium with a unique biphasic developmental cycle. It is a zoonotic pathogen with a wide range of hosts and can cause avian chlamydiosis in birds and psittacosis in humans. The pathogen is transmitted mainly through horizontal transmission between birds. Cross-species transmission sometimes occurs and human-to-human transmission has recently been confirmed. This review provides an updated overview of C. psittaci from the perspective of both avian chlamydiosis and psittacosis. We include the aspects of genotype, host-pathogen inte

Identification of Corynebacterium ulcerans and Erysipelothrix sp. in Malayan pangolins-a potential threat to public health?

UNLABELLED: The discovery of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2-like and Middle East respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-like viruses in Malayan pangolins has raised concerns about their potential role in the spread of zoonotic diseases. Herein, we describe the isolation and whole-genome sequencing of potentially zoonotic two bacterial pathogens from diseased Malaysian pangolins (Manis javanica)-Corynebacterium ulcerans and Erysipelothrix sp. The newly identified species were designated as C. ulcerans P69 and Erysipelothrix sp. P66. C. ulcerans P69 exhibited 99.2% whole-genome nucleo

A first insight into seropositivity and risk factors for Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii in free-roaming dogs in Ecuador.

Brucellosis and Q fever are two bacterial zoonoses caused by Brucella spp. and Coxiella burnetii, respectively. Dogs are reservoirs of these pathogens and play an important role in their spread. In this research, we determined the seroprevalence of antibodies against Brucella spp. and C. burnetii in free-roaming dogs from Ecuador and conducted a statistical analysis based on geographical variables. Serum samples were collected from 397 free-roaming dogs between November 2018 and May 2019 and analyzed with commercial ELISA tests for Brucella spp. and Q fever. An overall seroprevalence of 2.8 %

Immunosuppressive Mechanisms in Brucellosis in Light of Chronic Bacterial Diseases.

Brucellosis is considered one of the major zoonoses worldwide, constituting a critical livestock and human health concern with a huge socio-economic burden. Brucella genus, its etiologic agent, is composed of intracellular bacteria that have evolved a prodigious ability to elude and shape host immunity to establish chronic infection. Brucella's intracellular lifestyle and pathogen-associated molecular patterns, such as its specific lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are key factors for hiding and hampering recognition by the immune system. Here, we will review the current knowledge of evading and immun

Interdisciplinary aspects of possible negative effects of dogs on humans in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The coexistence of humans and dogs, in addition to all positive effects, can result in negative effects on human health. A particular risk is posed by a population of stray dogs, that is, dogs without owners and veterinary supervision. A contact with dogs in addition to bites, carries the risk of viral, bacterial and parasitic zoonoses, and can also cause psychological trauma. Children, the elderly and pregnant women are the categories most susceptible to the negative effects of dogs. The aim of the paper was to make an interdisciplinary analysis of the negative effects of dogs on humans. Dog

The effectiveness of biosecurity interventions in reducing the transmission of bacteria from livestock to humans at the farm level: A systematic literature review.

Zoonotic bacterial infections are a health hazard for people who are in regular contact with livestock at the farm level. Improved biosecurity can limit zoonotic pathogen transmission within farms. The aim of this review was to summarize the effectiveness of farm-level biosecurity interventions in reducing bacterial transmission from animals to people who lived, worked in or visited farms. A systematic literature review was conducted using Embase, Ovid Medline and Agris databases, which were searched on 7th of July 2019, limited to English language papers but with no time exclusion criteria. Review: Mitigating the risks posed by intensification in livestock production: the examples of antimicrobial resistance and zoonoses.

Major shifts in how animals are bred, raised and slaughtered are involved in the intensification of livestock systems. Globally, these changes have produced major increases in access to protein-rich foods with high levels of micronutrients. Yet the intensification of livestock systems generates numerous externalities including environmental degradation, zoonotic disease transmission and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Where the process of intensification is most advanced, the expertise, institutions and regulations required to manage these externalities have developed ov
