Self-care behaviors and glycemic control in type I diabetes.

This study investigated the degree of adherence to different aspects of the diabetic treatment regimen (insulin injections, glucose testing, diet, and exercise), the consistency of adherence across different regimen areas, and relationships between adherence and glycemic control. A predominantly adult community sample of 93 insulin dependent outpatients participated in the prospective study that involved two series of home interviews separated by a 6-month interval. Multiple measures of adherence (e.g. self-report, interview/recall, self-monitoring, and objective indices) were collected for ea

Some effects of chlorimipramine and imipramine on the schedule-controlled behavior of the pigeon.

The effects of imipramine and chlorimipramine on schedule-controlled behavior were compared by examining the effects of both drugs on the performance of pigeons under a multiple fixed-interval 600-s fixed-ratio 30-response (mult FI 600 FR 30) schedule of grain presentation and under a mult FI 200 FI 200 schedule in which responding in one component was punished. Imipramine decreased the rate of FR 30 responding at slightly lower doses than or the same doses as those needed to decrease the rate of FI 600 responding. In contrast, chlorimipramine decreased the rate of FI 600 responding at lower d

TALE and Hox Transcription Factors Control Adult Behaviors in Zebrafish.

Behavioral dysfunction is a common characteristic of many mental health disorders. While the causes of these disorders vary, aberrant behaviors may arise from alterations in transcriptional regulation already during early neural development. Because transcription factors (TFs) often belong to families of closely related members, disruption of a single TF may indirectly influence the functionality of other family members. Consequently, mutations in TFs within the same family may lead to overlapping, yet distinct, phenotypes. This feature of TF function has important implications for understandi

Relationship dynamics and behavioral adaptations in the control of the 2022 mpox epidemic.

We analyzed the patterns of transmission in the 2022 clade IIb mpox epidemic as it unfolded in the European population of men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed an agent-based model that simulates sexual pair formation, incorporating both brief and longer-term sexual relationships. The model implements survey data on the sexual behavior of MSM and accounts for the highly heterogeneous nature of the sexual contact network within this community. When simulating the mpox epidemic, the model reproduces the reported numbers of sexual partners of mpox-infected individuals. We find that infect

Brain endocannabinoid control of metabolic and non-metabolic feeding behaviors.

The central endocannabinoid (eCB) system in brain shows a crucial role in the regulation of feeding behaviors, influencing both metabolic and non-metabolic mechanisms of appetite control, which has been paid much attention. Although there are already many review articles discussing eCB modulation of feeding behaviors, our paper attempts to summarize the recent advancements through synapses, circuits, and network in brain. Our focus is on the dual role of eCB signalling in regulating metabolic energy balance and hedonic reward-related feeding. In the context of metabolic regulation of feeding b

Determinants of intimate partner controlling behavior targeting women in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intimate partner controlling behavior toward women is an important form of intimate partner violence (IPV), both in terms of limiting women's daily lives and in terms of reproducing patriarchal culture and male dominance in societies at the micro level. A limited number of studies in the literature have identified the male intimate partner's controlling behavior as a dependent variable, which is important for understanding the determinants of this type of IPV. There is also a significant gap in the literature in terms of studies focusing on the case of Türkiye. Thus, the main a

Endolysosomal TPCs regulate social behavior by controlling oxytocin secretion.

Oxytocin (OT) is a prominent regulator of many aspects of mammalian social behavior and stored in large dense-cored vesicles (LDCVs) in hypothalamic neurons. It is released in response to activity-dependent Ca2+ influx, but is also dependent on Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, which primes LDCVs for exocytosis. Despite its importance, critical aspects of the Ca2+-dependent mechanisms of its secretion remain to be identified. Here we show that lysosomes surround dendritic LDCVs, and that the direct activation of endolysosomal two-pore channels (TPCs) provides the critical Ca2+ signals to

The investigation of mechanisms underlying addictive behaviors: a case-control study.

Background: The contradictory nature of behavioral addictions has sustained a nondefinitive debate regarding their construct validity. Objective(s): The current study aims at exploring mechanisms underlying two distinct classes of behaviors-behavioral addictions characterized by core alterations in reward processing systems (ARPS) and behaviors with a main function of maladaptive coping. Methods: This case-control study included 99 treatment-seeking individuals with a primary diagnosis of alcohol use disorder (male: N = 68; female: N = 31) and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects (male: N = 38; fe

miR-124 controls Drosophila behavior and is required for neural development.

MicroRNA-124 (miR-124) is an evolutionarily conserved, small, noncoding RNA molecule that participates in the central nervous system (CNS) developmental control of gene expression. In the current study, we found that Drosophila embryos lacking the mir-124 gene did not exhibit detectable defects in axon growth or CNS development. On the other hand, adult mutants showed severe problems in locomotion, flight, and female fertility. Furthermore, the deficits that we observed in the adult stage could be marginally rescued with elav-GAL4 driven expression of miR-124, making elav-GAL4 an excellently s

Behavioral management of the triggers of recurrent headache: a randomized controlled trial.

This study was designed to evaluate the traditional advice to headache sufferers to avoid all triggers ('Avoidance'), and a novel approach to trigger management (Learning to Cope with Triggers - 'LCT') that included graduated exposure to selected triggers to promote desensitization. Individuals (84F, 43M) with migraine and/or tension-type headache were assigned randomly to one of four groups: Waiting-list (Waitlist); Avoidance; Avoidance combined with cognitive behavior therapy (Avoid + CBT); and LCT. Changes in headaches and medication consumption (in parentheses) from pre- to post-treatment

Randomized controlled trials in frontotemporal dementia: cognitive and behavioral outcomes.

Progress has been made in understanding the genetics and molecular biology of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Targets for intervention have been identified, therapies are being developed, and clinical trials are advancing. A major challenge for FTD research is that multiple underlying pathologies can be associated with heterogeneous phenotypes. The neuropsychological profiles associated with FTD spectrum disorders often include executive dysfunction, language impairments and behavioral disturbance. Behavioral variant FTD is characterized by an initial presentation of changes in personality, beh

Chinese attitudes, norms, behavioral control and gambling involvement in Macao.

This study tested the applicability of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) on gambling intention and involvement in a representative Chinese sample in Macao, recruited by a random residential number dialing method. We successfully interviewed 685 respondents, with about one-third of them reporting that they had participated in gambling activities during the 12 months prior to the interview. The results of structural equation modeling suggested that favorable attitudes toward superstition and techniques, poor sense of perceived behavioral control over gambling refusal, and high gambling intent
