Pathways of personality and learning risk for addictive behaviors: A systematic review of mediational research on the acquired preparedness model.

OBJECTIVE: The Acquired Preparedness (AP) model proposes that impulsive personality traits predispose some individuals to learn certain behavior-outcome associations (expectancies), and that these expectancies in turn influence the escalation of risky behaviors. This theory has been applied to the development of behaviors such as drinking, drug use, gambling, and disordered eating. In the current study, we aimed to summarize empirical tests of this model over the 20 years since it was proposed. METHOD: We used a descriptive approach to summarize tests of mediation across 50 studies involving

Circadian Rhythm and Sleep Analyses in a Fruit Fly Model of Fragile X Syndrome Using a Video-Based Automated Behavioral Research System.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is caused by the full mutation in the FMR1 gene on the Xq27.3 chromosome region. It is the most common monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and inherited intellectual disability (ID). Besides ASD and ID and other symptoms, individuals with FXS may exhibit sleep problems and impairment of circadian rhythm (CR). The Drosophila melanogaster models of FXS, such as dFMR1B55, represent excellent models for research in the FXS field. During this study, sleep patterns and CR in dFMR1B55 mutants were analyzed, using a new platform based on continuous high-resolutio

2024 Scholars' Research Symposium Abstract: Sex-Split Analysis of Pathology and Motor-Behavioral Outcomes in a Mouse Model Of CLN8-Batten Disease.

INTRODUCTION: CLN8-Batten disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized phenotypically by progressive deterioration of motor and cognitive abilities, visual symptoms, epileptic seizures, and premature death. Mutations in CLN8 result in characteristic Batten disease symptoms and brain-wide pathology including accumulation of lysosomal storage material, gliosis, and neurodegeneration. Recent investigations of other subtypes of Batten disease (CLN1, CLN3, CLN6) have emphasized the influence of biological sex on disease and treatment outcomes; however, little is known about sex differ

Associations of the Behavioral Assessment and Research System (BARS) neurobehavioral outcomes with attention problems in children living near coal ash storage sites.

Environmental exposures have been linked to childhood problems with overactivity, attention, and impulse control, and an increased risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Two approaches to identify these types of exposure-related neurobehavioral problems include the use of computerized tests, such as the Behavioral Assessment and Research System (BARS), as well as the use of behavior rating scales. To assess comparability of these two types of measures, we analyzed data from 281 children aged 6 to 14 years enrolled in a 5-year research study investigating coal ash ex

Methods for analyzing longitudinal data from randomized pretest-posttest-follow-up trials in behavioral research: a practical guide to latent change models.

Randomized pretest, posttest, follow-up (RPPF) designs are widely used in longitudinal behavioral intervention research to evaluate the efficacy of treatments over time. These designs typically involve random assignment of participants to treatment and control conditions, with assessments conducted at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and during the follow-up period. Researchers primarily focus on determining whether the intervention is more effective than the control condition at post-treatment and whether these effects are sustained or change over time. This paper presents Latent Chan

The Research and Evaluation of Antipsychotic Treatment in Community Behavioral Health Organizations, Outcomes (REACH-OUT) study: real-world clinical practice in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Outpatient facilities, such as community behavioral health organizations (CBHOs), play a critical role in the care of patients with serious mental illness, but there is a paucity of "real-world" patient outcomes data from this health care setting. Therefore, we conducted The Research and Evaluation of Antipsychotic Treatment in Community Behavioral Health Organizations, Outcomes (REACH-OUT) trial, a real-world, prospective, noninterventional observational study of patients with mental illness treated at CBHOs across the United States. We describe demographic and clinical characteri

Research note: Transient behavioral effects of feed restriction in a white feathered laying hen pullet strain - Assessment of frustration and locomotor energy expenditure.

Quantitative feed restriction is used to effectively manipulate layer pullet growth trajectories in research and rarely in commercial practice. In this study, we asked whether this intervention impairs pullet welfare or affects locomotor energy expenditure. Pullets were raised in furnished floor pens in a split-plot design: Two ages at photostimulation (18 weeks: early-PS vs 20 weeks: late-PS) with two feeding regimens each (ad libitum: AL vs 20%-restricted: R) between 12 and 21 weeks. Home pen video recordings were annotated for four behavioral categories: abnormal pecking, aggression, high-e

A series of randomized trials of behavioral economic interventions to increase racial and ethnic diversity of research participants: Rationale and design of ITERATE.

RATIONALE: Prospective clinical research studies are essential for determining the effectiveness and safety of drugs, medical devices, and healthcare delivery interventions. However, low enrollment, particularly among Black and Hispanic patients, challenges the generalizability of results and fairness of research. Leveraging insights from behavioral economics to modify the content of messages recruiting patients to join research studies may increase enrollment and representativeness of trial populations. Qualitative research on the needs status of patients undergoing automated peritoneal dialysis based on behavior change wheel theory.

INTRODUCTION: This article aimed to explore the needs status of patients undergoing automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) based on the behavior change wheel (BCW) theory (and associated improvement strategies) to clarify the obstacles that affect patients' behavior choices. Furthermore, it aimed to explore practical countermeasures to improve the quality of life of patients undergoing APD. METHODS: Eleven patients undergoing APD were selected for a semi-structured in-depth interview using the purposive sampling method, and the phenomenological qualitative research method was used to organize an

Research on the discrete element modeling method and tensile fracture behavior of the control unit stranded wire of Shearer cables.

In addressing the mechanical response of the complex twisted structure of the control unit stranded wire of shearer cables, a modeling method based on Discrete Element Method (DEM) is proposed. This method incorporates nonlinear plastic deformation and the complex multi-body contact characteristics caused by twisting. In this study, a three-dimensional spatial model of the control unit stranded wire was developed and discretized into a discrete element model. Axial tensile loads were applied to the model, causing fracture, and the resulting stress-strain curve was compared with experimental te

Leadership Behaviors of Frontline Nurse Managers: A Mixed-Methods Research Study Identifying Essential Areas for Social Support.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how frontline nurse managers (FLNMs) perceive and experience formal and informal social support and how personal factors and social support relate to their transformational leadership (TL) behaviors. BACKGROUND: Ineffective leadership by FLNMs is associated with costly outcomes. Evidence suggests that leadership development is a function of personal and social factors; however, a better understanding of this process is needed. METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was used. The quantitative strand included a cross-sectional survey in a sample of FLNMs. The

Research on long-term migration behaviors of heavy metals after close-distance coal seam backfill mining.

The backfill mining of coal-based solid waste in goaf poses a potential risk of heavy metal pollution to the groundwater environment, and the migration behavior of heavy metals differs significantly under the disturbance of backfill mining in close-distance multi-layer coal seams and single-layer coal seams. In this study, a migration model of heavy metals after solid backfilling in the goaf of shallow-buried close-distance thick coal seams was established, and the impact of the overburden damage and the layered distribution of the filling body on the long-term migration behavior of heavy meta

Operational definitions and measurement of externalizing behavior problems: An integrative review including research models and clinical diagnostic systems.

Measurement of externalizing disorders such as antisocial disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or borderline disorder have relevant implications for the daily lives of people with these disorders. While the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) have provided the diagnostic framework for decades, recent dimensional frameworks question the categorical approach of psychopathology, inherent in traditional nosotaxies. Tests and instruments develop under the DSM or ICD framework preferentially adopt this cate
