Preschool behavioral and social-cognitive problems as predictors of (Pre)adolescent disruptive behavior.

This article describes preschool social understanding and difficult behaviors (hot temper, disobedience, bossiness and bullying) as predictors of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and aggressive conduct disorder (ACD) in a Dutch population sample of (pre)adolescents (N = 1943), measured at age 10-12 and at age 13-15. ODD and ACD were assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist and the Youth Self-Report, preschool behavior was evaluated by the parental questionnaire [Symbol: see text]How was your child as a preschooler? (age 4-5)'. Adjusted for each other, all difficult preschool behaviors excep

AIDS-related knowledge and behavior among married Kenyan men: a behavioral paradox?

The heterosexual character of HIV/AIDS transmission in sub-Saharan Africa, a context where men are dominant in sexual and reproductive matters, underscores the importance of assessing male behavior in sexual and related health arenas. Despite condom use being the recommended and expected behavioral response to knowledge about the fatal outcome of HIV/AIDS infection, use continues to be extremely low in sub-Saharan Africa. This article explores the relationship between various facets of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and condom use among married Kenyan men. The main finding is one of a significant in

Self-injurious behavior and Prader-Willi syndrome: behavioral forms and body locations.

With few exceptions (e.g., Lesch-Nyhan syndrome), the specific nature of self-injury in relation to identified genetic syndromes associated with mental retardation is poorly understood. In the present study we surveyed the families of 62 persons with Prader-Willi syndrome to determine the prevalence, topographies, and specific body locations of self-injurious behavior. Self-injury was reported for 81% of the participants. Skin-picking was the most prevalent form, with the front of the legs and head being disproportionately targeted as preferred self-injury body sites. Individuals with the 15q1

Sexual behavior of young men in Thailand: regional differences and evidence of behavior change.

An anonymous, self-administered behavioral survey was conducted in Royal Thai Army (RTA) conscripts from 19 provinces throughout Thailand in May 1996. All (to a maximum of 350) Thai men who entered the RTA in each province were selected. Data from 5474 men were included in this analysis. High-risk behaviors were reported nationwide; however, some regional differences were found. Men from the upper North were more likely to have had a commercial sex worker (CSW) as their first sexual partner (42%) than men from any other region. However, in the past year, reported sex with CSWs in the upper Nor

The association of sexual risk behaviors and problem drug behaviors in high school students.

PURPOSE: To examine the associations among early age of onset of sexual intercourse and drug use, lifetime and current problem drug behaviors, and sexual risk behaviors. METHODS: The 1993 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behavior Survey was administered to a sample of 3,054 students from randomly selected high schools and classrooms; 36% (1,078) consistently reported having had sexual intercourse. Three indicators of sexual risk behaviors were assessed: (1) number of lifetime sexual partners, (2) number of recent partners, and (3) condom nonuse at last intercourse. Three sets of independent variables

Comparison of the effects of prototypical behavioral stimulants on locomotor activity and rotational behavior in rats.

The present study was performed to characterize on rotational behavior the dose- and time-effect relationship of four prototypical behavioral stimulants that interact with dopamine systems via different mechanisms of action. Drug effects on rotational behavior was compared with effects on locomotor activity. The drugs examined were apomorphine (0.03-1.0 mg/kg), d-amphetamine (0.1-3.0 mg/kg), cocaine (3.0-56 mg/kg), and caffeine (10-100 mg/kg). SKF-38393 (0.3-10 mg/kg), a dopamine receptor agonist that has only modest effects on locomotor activity, was tested as a comparison. In rats with unila

Temporal stability and overlap of behavioral and questionnaire assessments of type A behavior in coronary patients.

To examine the temporal stability of the Type A behavior pattern (TABP) after a cardiac event, both a Videotaped Clinical Interview (VCI) (formerly known as the Videotaped Structured Interview) and the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) were administered to 81 male and 19 female patients three times during the first year after hospitalization for an initial myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass graft, or both. There was no intervention other than the usual treatment provided by the medical care system. The test-retest reliability coefficients were moderately high for all measures of TABP. T

Cognitive versus behavioral procedures in cognitive-behavior therapy: a critical review of the evidence.

During the past decade there has been an increasing emphasis on cognition in psychology and behavior therapy. This movement has spawned several distinctive cognitive therapies. While those therapies do employ innovative cognitive treatment procedures, they often do so in the context of well-established behavioral treatment procedures which may or may not be acknowledged by the label "cognitive-behavior therapy". This paper addresses the question of whether cognitive therapy is an evolutionary or revolutionary development from behavior therapy and critically evaluates the evidence for the effic

Addictive behaviors and life problems before and after behavioral treatment of problem drinkers.

The broader impact of a behavioral self-control training intervention focusing on the reduction of alcohol consumption was examined in a sample of 93 problem drinkers (55 male). Individual life problems were assessed via the method of goal attainment scaling before and after treatment and at 3-6 months, 12 months and 24 months following termination. Alcohol and drug use, smoking and weight were also evaluated. At intake, women were more likely than men to be unmarried, married to a problem drinking spouse, or taking psychoactive prescription medication but less likely to be using illicit drugs

Behavioral change: from neurobiology to behavioral-change theories and back - part 1.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral change remains challenging despite a vast body of evidence linking health behaviors with several health outcomes. Over the past few decades, various health-behavior change theories and techniques have emerged, leading to significant advances in the field. However, although some existing theories provide competent models to structure behavioral-change approaches, they do not provide a unified neurobiological foundation. OBJECTIVE: To outline the connections between neuroscientific foundations and behavioral-change theories and to provide an overarching neuroscientific pe

Capturing Behavioral Symptoms in Huntington's Disease Using the Huntington's Disease-Behavioral Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: The Huntington's Disease Behavioral Questionnaire (HD-BQ) captures behavioral symptoms arising from cognitive, psychiatric, and functional domains. Recognizing the high prevalence of anosognosia in HD, the HD-BQ incorporates patient- and companion-reported versions. OBJECTIVE: Examine the utility of the HD-BQ in capturing behavioral symptoms in HD. METHODS: The HD-BQ was administered to 71 manifest HD patients and their companions, plus 71 healthy controls (HC). Differences in HD-BQ scores were examined using Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests. RESULTS: HD patients r

Subtle behavioral alterations in the spontaneous behaviors of MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

Midbrain dopamine (DA) neurons are essential for regulating movement, emotion, and reward, with their dysfunction closely linked to Parkinson's disease (PD). While DA neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) have known overlapping roles in behaviors such as depression and reward, their distinct contributions to subtle spontaneous behaviors remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we utilized a 3D behavioral analysis platform powered by machine learning to explore motor and nuanced behavioral changes in a subacute MPTP mouse model of PD. This

Methodological issues in behavioral addictions' research: A call for an unbiased analysis of excessive behaviors.

In the psychological literature, there has been a proliferation of new behavioral addictions, often biased by an aprioristic and confirmatory approach that applied the addiction framework without adequately considering other potential explanations of excessive behaviors. This position paper further extends the critiques previously pointed out in the literature by highlighting the methodological issues underlying the current behavioral addiction research and the need for future studies to avoid a confirmatory and aprioristic approach (whatever the etiological hypothesis). Analyzing repetitive b

Understanding drunkorexia behaviors among college students using the theory of planned behavior.

Drunkorexia refers to high-risk behaviors that involve the intersection of disordered eating behaviors and risky alcohol consumption. This study utilized the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify potential psychosocial factors that contribute to drunkorexia among students (484 undergraduate students) from a midwestern Mid-sized university. This cross-sectional study used online surveys designed to measure various drunkorexia-related behaviors including alcohol consumption, calorie restriction, excessive exercise, and purging utilizing antecedents of the TPB. About one-fourth of

Pathways for Naturalistic Looking Behavior in Primate I: Behavioral Characteristics and Brainstem Circuits.

Organisms control their visual worlds by moving their eyes, heads, and bodies. This control of "gaze" or "looking" is key to survival and intelligence, but our investigation of the underlying neural mechanisms in natural conditions is hindered by technical limitations. Recent advances have enabled measurement of both brain and behavior in freely moving animals in complex environments, expanding on historical head-fixed laboratory investigations. We juxtapose looking behavior as traditionally measured in the laboratory against looking behavior in naturalistic conditions, finding that behavior c

Specialized and versatile antisocial behavioral profiles in preschoolers: Associations with persistent behavioral problems.

This study investigated specialized and versatile antisocial patterns in preschoolers and examined the link between these patterns and the risk of developing chronic antisocial behaviors throughout childhood. A total of 556 children (50.6% boys, 88% White) participated in this three-wave longitudinal study at 3-5, 6-8, and 10-12 years old. A latent transition analysis revealed that most preschoolers (89.5%) who adopt several subtypes of antisocial behaviors simultaneously exhibit stable and severe antisocial behaviors throughout childhood. In contrast, most preschoolers (60%) who favor one spe

Linking the Brain with Behavior: The Neural Dynamics of Success and Failure in Goal-directed Behavior.

The human brain is extremely flexible and capable of rapidly selecting relevant information in accordance with task goals. Regions of frontoparietal cortex flexibly represent relevant task information such as task rules and stimulus features when participants perform tasks successfully, but less is known about how information processing breaks down when participants make mistakes. This is important for understanding whether and when information coding recorded with neuroimaging is directly meaningful for behavior. Here, we used magnetoencephalography to assess the temporal dynamics of informat
