Zero valent iron and clay mixtures for removal of trichloroethylene, chromium(VI), and nitrate.

A series of batch experiments on free swell, hydraulic conductivity, and contaminant removal efficiency was performed for the combination of bentonite and zero valent iron (ZVI), in order to identify the optimal mixing ratio between bentonite and ZVI. The swell volume of the bentonite-ZVI mixtures did not change with increasing ZVI, and the hydraulic conductivity decreased as the ZVI increased. The reduction rates and removal efficiencies of trichloroethylene (TCE), Chromium(VI), and nitrate increased as ZVI content increased, while there was no practical difference in removal efficiencies bet

Removal of ammonium, phosphate, and sulfonamide antibiotics using alum sludge and low-grade charcoal pellets.

Powder adsorbents perform well due to their large surface area but are difficult to use because of aggregation and channeling. In this study, pelletization of adsorbents was proposed as a solution to these operating problems. A three-component mixture was extruded into pellets and calcined under air or nitrogen conditions The pellet adsorbent removed 47, 71, 97, and 72% of ammonium, phosphate, sulfathiazole, and sulfamethoxazole, respectively. Bentonite improved greatly the strength of pellets, and a 10 wt% of bentonite was sufficient to maintain pellet shape and mass. No significant differenc

Impact of coupling biochar and clay minerals on physicochemical properties of sandy soils and CH4/CO2 flux for agriculture.

Sandy soils present key limitations to sustainable agriculture due to low water retention, poor aggregation, and limited nutrient-holding capacity, motivating the use of amendments to overcome these constraints. This study evaluated zeolite, bentonite, and aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) at 2, 5, and 10 wt%, with and without biochar, on the physical, chemical, and gas-exchange properties of a sandy soil in addition to an agronomy implication under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that all clay minerals reduced soil bulk density, improved aggregation, and increased available water content (AW

Assessment of the feed additive consisting of bentonite (dioctahedral montmorillonite) as an anticaking agent for all animal species and as a substance for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins for pigs, poultry and ruminants for the renewal of its authorisation (BASF SE).

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the renewal of bentonite as a technological feed additive in the functional groups of anticaking agents for all animal species and of substances for reduction of the contamination of feed by mycotoxins for pigs, poultry and ruminants. The applicant has provided evidence that the additive currently on the market complies with the existing conditions of authorisation. There is no evidence that would lead the FEEDAP Panel to reconsider its previous conclusions. Thus, the Panel concluded that the ad

Improving nutrient fixation and dry matter content of an ammonium-rich anaerobic digestion effluent by struvite formation and clay adsorption.

The anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes that contain nitrogen leads to its mineralization, yielding a digestate rich in ammonium (NH(4)(+)), an important fertilizing nutrient. The applicability of AD digestate as fertilizer can be improved by fixating the nutrients and increasing its dry matter content. Methods for the fixation and recovery of the digestate's NH(4)(+) and possible also PO(4)(3-) include struvite precipitation and adsorption in clay materials such as bentonite. These techniques were tested in batch experiments employing the liquid fraction of a digestate originating from

Chemoenzymatic Synthesis of Furfuryl Alcohol from Biomass in Tandem Reaction System.

In this study, chemoenzymatic synthesis of furfuryl alcohol from biomass (e.g., corncob, bamboo shoot shell, and rice straw) was attempted by the tandem catalysis with Lewis acid (SnCl4 or solid acid SO42-/SnO2-bentonite) and biocatalyst in one-pot manner. Compared with SnCl4, solid acid SO42-/SnO2-bentonite had higher catalytic activity for converting biomass into furfural, which could be biologically converted into furfuryl alcohol with Escherichia coli CCZU-H15 whole-cell harboring reductase activity. Sequential catalysis of biomass into furfural with SO42-/SnO2-bentonite (3.0 wt%) at 170 °

Modulation of grape must vitamin content by oenological treatments affects Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation performance and wine volatile composition.

This study explores the impact of oenological treatments with fining agents or yeast-based nutrients on the vitamin content of grape musts, and thus on the fermentative performance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts and the volatile composition of wine. Products such as bentonites and oenological carbons were shown to deplete several B-group vitamins from the must, while yeast derivatives were able to release significant amounts. Bentonite was used to modulate the vitamin B1 (thiamine) content of a real must and different yeast inoculation procedures were evaluated: active dry yeast and cells

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the interference of environment components on the in vitro evaluation of aflatoxin B₁ adsorption capacity of sodium bentonite under simulated gastrointestinal conditions of monogastric and ruminant animals. Sodium bentonite showed a high aflatoxin B₁ affinity with all of the assays. Langmuir or sigmoid isotherms were found in different assays. Both the affinities and the surface excesses at monolayer saturation were affected by the buffer components. The specific influence of ions in each buffer solution was investigated. A significant decrease

Remediation of DNAPL source zones with granular iron: laboratory and field tests.

Degradation of dissolved chlorinated solvents using granular iron is an established in situ technology. This paper reports on investigations into mixing iron and bentonite with contaminated soil for in situ containment and degradation of dense nonaqueous phase liquid source zones. In the laboratory, hypovials containing soil, water, bentonite, iron, and free-phase trichloroethene (TCE) were assembled. Periodic measurement of TCE, chloride, and degradation products showed progressive degradation of TCE to nondetectable levels. Subsequently, a demonstration was conducted at Canadian Forces Base

Removal of Chromium from Soils Cultivated with Maize (Zea Mays) After the Addition of Natural Minerals as Soil Amendments.

The efficiency of natural minerals, i.e. zeolite, bentonite and goethite, regarding the retention of chromium, from maize was examined. Specifically, 1.0 kg of soil, 1.0 g of soil amendment and either 50 mg L-1 Cr(III) or 1 mg L-1 Cr(VI) were added in plant pots. Then, seeds of maize were cultivated. Each treatment was repeated three times. The statistical results of the experiments were analyzed by LSD test. Cr(III) addition in soil has shown that zeolite was the only amendment that increased the dry weight. Zeolite and bentonite reduced significantly the total chromium in plants after the ad
