Topographical organization of mu and Beta band activity associated with hand and foot movements in patients with perirolandic lesions.

To study the topographical organization of mu and beta band event-related desynchronization (ERD) associated with voluntary hand and foot movements, we used magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings from 19 patients with perirolandic lesions. Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) was used to detect and localize changes in the mu (7 - 11 Hz) and beta (13 - 30 Hz) frequency bands associated with repetitive movements of the hand and foot and overlaid on individual coregistered magnetic resonance (MR) images. Hand movements showed homotopic and contralateral ERD at the sensorimotor (S/M) cortex in

Electrophysiological ratio markers for the balance between reward and punishment.

It has been argued that prototypical forms of psychopathology result from an imbalance in reward and punishment systems. Recent studies suggest that the ratios between slower and faster waves of the electroencephalogram (EEG) index this motivational balance and might therefore have diagnostic value for psychopathology. To scrutinize this notion, the present study investigated whether resting state EEG ratios would predict decision making on the Iowa gambling task (Iowa-GT), a well-known marker for motivational imbalance. A resting state EEG recording was acquired followed by the Iowa-GT in twe

Rate vs. rhythm control and adverse outcomes among European patients with atrial fibrillation.

AIM: The impact of rate and rhythm control strategies on outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) remains controversial. Our aims were: to report use of rate and rhythm control strategies in European patients from the EURObservational Research Program AF General Pilot Registry. Secondly, to evaluate outcomes according to assigned strategies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Use of pure rate and rhythm control agents was described according to European regions. 1-year follow-up data were reported. Among rate control strategies, beta-blockers were the most commonly used drug. Proportions of patie

A randomised, controlled study of rate versus rhythm control in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and heart failure: (CAFE-II Study).

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) often coexist. The aim was to investigate whether restoring sinus rhythm (SR) could improve cardiac function, symptoms, exercise capacity and quality of life (QoL) in patients with chronic heart failure. METHODS: Patients with HF and persistent AF receiving guideline-recommended treatments, including anticoagulants, were eligible for the study. Patients were randomised to either rhythm (treated with amiodarone for at least 3 months prior to attempting biphasic external cardioversion and continued amiodarone long-term if SR was restor

Oscillations in the dentate gyrus as a tool for the performance of the hippocampal functions: Healthy and epileptic brain.

The dentate gyrus (DG) is part of the hippocampal formation and is essential for important cognitive processes such as navigation and memory. The oscillatory activity of the DG network is believed to play a critical role in cognition. DG circuits generate theta, beta, and gamma rhythms, which participate in the specific information processing performed by DG neurons. In the temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), cognitive abilities are impaired, which may be due to drastic alterations in the DG structure and network activity during epileptogenesis. The theta rhythm and theta coherence are especially vu

Electrophysiological characterization of the functional state of the brain in mental disturbances in workers involved in the clean-up following the Chernobyl atomic energy station accident.

Studies were carried out on 150 workers with mental disturbances, who had been involved in the clean-up of the Chernobyl atomic energy station accident. Visual and computer analyses of EEG traces from 43 workers were compared with traces from 17 healthy subjects, and the comparison revealed that the most common features in workers were disorganization of the alpha-rhythm and strengthening of beta-1-activity in the sensorimotor cortex. In neurosis-like syndromes (13 patients), there was a significant increase in the power of the alpha-rhythm in the anterior parts of the cortex; in psycho-organi

Management of arrhythmias in pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a potentially devastating clinical condition with a poor long-term prognosis. Cardiac arrhythmias are frequent in PH, and pulmonary hypertensives are particularly susceptible to the adverse haemodynamic effects of heart rhythm disorders. However, arrhythmia management in PH patients can be more challenging than in the general population due to the particular physiological idiosyncrasies associated with the condition. Here, we summarise and appraise the data pertaining to multimodality treatment of cardiac arrhythmias in PH to help refine the managemen

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation modulates the amplitude of EEG synchrony patterns.

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation has been associated with numerous cognitive and behavioural effects, such as enhancement of visual memory in healthy individuals, improvement of visual deficits in stroke patients, as well as possibly improvement of motor function in Parkinson's disease; yet, the mechanism of action is unclear. Since Parkinson's and other neuropsychiatric diseases are characterized by maladaptive dynamics of brain rhythms, we investigated whether noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation was associated with measurable changes in EEG oscillatory rhythms within theta (4-7.5 Hz),

Both low and high energy cardioversion induced accelerated ventricular tachycardia in a patient treated with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.

A 72-year old male with an old myocardial infarction who had drug-refractory ventricular tachyarrhythmias received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The patient did not take his prescribed beta-blocking agent for two days, following which he experienced six discrete shocks for spontaneous VT while riding his bicycle. Both 5J and 30J cardioversions were ineffective at terminating the VT and accelerated VT developed following the shocks. After admission, an electrophysiological study was performed while he was taking the beta-blocking agent, both low and high energy cardioversions

[Spectral analysis of systolic blood pressure in atrial fibrillation].

OBJECTIVES: Power spectral analysis was used to analyze fluctuations of systolic blood pressure and heart rate. METHODS: Non-invasive finger plethysmography and electrocardiography were performed in 20 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and in 10 age-matched healthy subjects with normal sinus rhythm. The impulse train was stored on a personal computer and the power spectrum of R-R interval and systolic blood pressure were obtained by Fourier analysis (0.01-0.03 Hz). The power spectrum (log power vs log frequency) characteristically revealed a linear regression as 1/f beta. RESULTS: Th

Atrial Fibrillation: The New Epidemic of the Ageing World.

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) increases with age. As the population ages, the burden of AF increases. AF is associated with an increased incidence of mortality, stroke, and coronary events compared to sinus rhythm. AF with a rapid ventricular rate may cause a tachycardia-related cardiomyopathy. Immediate direct-current (DC) cardioversion should be performed in patients with AF and acute myocardial infarction, chest pain due to myocardial ischemia, hypotension, severe heart failure, or syncope. Intravenous beta blockers, diltiazem, or verapamil may be administered to reduce immedia

Response of the renal pacemaker to beta 1-adrenoceptor agonist: difference from the cardiac pacemaker.

Electromyographic responses of the canine-pyeloureter to dobutamine, a beta 1-adrenoceptor agonist were investigated in vitro. Dobutamine produced a marked enhancement of potential in the pelvicalyceal (PC-) border, but failed to evoke noticeable responses in the renal pelvis and ureter. Dobutamine, however, made the pacemaker rhythm a little slow. This finding shows that the renal pacemaker is somewhat different form the cardiac pacemaker, pace of which is quickened by dobutamine.

The diagnostic and therapeutic challenge of atrial flutter in children: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Palpitations represent a common cause for consultation in the pediatric Emergency Department (ED). Unlike adults, palpitations in children are less frequently dependent from the heart, recognizing other causes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 11-year-old male came to our pediatric ED for epigastric pain, vomiting and palpitations. During the previous 6 month the patient was affected by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus). Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed supraventricular tachycardia. Therefore, adenosine was administered unsuccessfully. The administration of adenosine,

Cerebellar rhythms: mechanisms, functions and translational opportunities.

Cerebellar rhythms provide frequency-specific support for motor, cognitive and affective functions. These oscillations are not epiphenomenal but rather dynamically regulated, spatially organized control signals that contribute to the coordination of prediction, error correction, learning and internal model updating. By synchronizing neuronal activity across cerebellar and distributed brain networks at multiple timescales, cerebellar rhythms enable precise and adaptable behaviour and coordination across neural systems. Accordingly, they offer biologically grounded targets for network-level diag

Foetal presentation of long QT syndrome.

Long-QT syndrome is a rare, inherited cardiac channelopathy that is characterized by arrhythmia, syncope and sudden cardiac death. Foetal symptoms are very rare and prenatal diagnosis is difficult. We report on a foetal presentation of long-QT syndrome with severe hydrops and a chaotic heart rhythm at 32 weeks of gestation. Postnatal electrocardiography showed runs of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and an extremely prolonged-QT segment (QTc of 640 ms). The initial approach of overdrive pacing, followed by the combined therapy of a beta blocker, a sodium channel blocker (mexiletine) and po

Gamma and beta power and the 1/f slope vary across a spectrum of depression severity.

Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder that impacts an individual's functioning, societal productivity, and quality of life. It is associated with disrupted neural activity (e.g., balance of excitation-inhibition) across networks implicated in emotional processing, such as between prefrontal and limbic regions. Gamma and beta activity measured with electroencephalography (EEG) differ between healthy individuals and those with depression, and predict treatment outcomes following pharmacological intervention. However, to date research has focussed on binary comparisons between individu

Decreased gamma band power and increased betagamma phaseamplitude coupling are characteristic of brain activity in patients with chronic spinal cord injury.

Neurophysiological biomarkers are needed to characterize the condition of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), for which effective symptomatic biomarkers are lacking. We recorded the resting-state magnetoencephalography data of 22 patients with SCI and 29 healthy controls. Power spectral density and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) were assessed for six frequency bands using source-reconstructed cortical currents. Compared with controls, SCI patients exhibited significantly reduced gamma band power and increased beta-gamma PAC in the frontal cortex, including the primary motor area (q < 0.05,

Phase coupling in the beta and gamma frequencies of motor cortex activity is elevated in people with Parkinson's disease when medication is temporarily withheld.

OBJECTIVE: How neuronal oscillatory activity in Parkinson's disease (PD) is organized and coordinated is not yet known. We hypothesized that cross-frequency phase synchrony (CFS) in the beta and gamma frequencies measured over the motor cortex [using electroencephalography (EEG)] at rest would be elevated in people with PD compared with healthy controls. ON- versus OFF-medication tests in the PD group were further compared with the hypothesis that elevated CFS would be found in the OFF-medication state. METHODS: CFS in beta and gamma frequencies was estimated in EEG recordings from 15 people

Electrophysiological effects of deep brain stimulation in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To study deep brain stimulation (DBS)-induced electrophysiological changes over time in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: We performed EEG recordings on 4 AN patients treated with DBS at 3 time points, and on 8 age-matched controls. We extracted oscillatory power in the alpha and beta bands, connectivity and global network organization parameters based on graph theory. RESULTS: We found strong significant within-subject changes in alpha and beta power over time. Nominally significant effects were observed for posterior left (L) alpha (p = 0.034) and anterior/posterior

Cognitive Processing for Step Precision Increases Beta and Gamma Band Modulation During Overground Walking.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cognitive processing for defining step precision during walking could induce changes in electrocortical activity. Ten healthy adults (21-36 years) were asked to walk overground in three different conditions: (1) normal walking in a straight path (NW); (2) walking in a pre-defined pathway forcing variation in step width and length by stepping on green marks on the floor (only one color: W1C), and (3) walking in the same pre-defined W1C pathway while evaluating different combinations among the colors green, yellow and red, in which only one color
