[Acute ear trauma caused by failure of mobile phone/cellular phone].

The case of acute acoustic and burn ear trauma caused by mobile phone failure is presented. A woman aged 24 after dialling a phone number and putting a phone into the ear heard a sound of high frequency and intensity. At the same time she felt a pain and heat and there was also a smoke from the phone. With otoscopic examination a burn of external acoustic duct (I0) and sensitive hearing loss (examination made with tuning forks) were stated. The patient did not agree to stay in hospital and she was administered prednizone, trimetazidin and xantylol nicotinate. Audiometric examination, which was

Alternobaric and hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the immediate and long-term treatment of Menière's disease.

Forty-five patients suffering from Menière's disease were submitted to pressure chamber therapy: 20 with constant pressure (2.2 ATA, hyperbaric treatment) and 25 with continuous variations in pressure levels (from 1.7 to 2.2 ATA, alternobaric treatment). Oxygenation therapy consisted of one session per day lasting 90 minutes for 15 days during the acute attacks followed by five consecutive sessions per month during a follow-up of two years. For a control group we used 18 patients treated with 10 per cent intravenous glycerol during the acute episode and 8 mg tid of betahistine thereafter. We c

Vertigo in a district NHS hospital.

Thirteen general ENT clinics are held for a population of 600,000 people. The present study comprises an individual experience in managing patients with dizziness seen in three general ENT clinics. Eighty-six patients with a complaint of dizziness were seen over a period of 10 years from 1974 to 1984. Postural vertigo in elderly patients was the commonest cause of vertigo (50 per cent) in the present study. Most of these patients suffered from momentary dizzy spells with excessive neck movements. Symptomatic relief was achieved with reassurance and advice to avoid precipitating neck movements

A process for prioritising systematic reviews in tinnitus.

Objective: To develop an innovative prioritisation process to identify topics for new or updated systematic reviews of tinnitus research.Design: A two-stage prioritisation process was devised. First, a scoping review assessed the amount of randomized controlled trial-level evidence available. This enabled development of selection criteria for future reviews, aided the design of template protocol and suggested the scale of work that would be required to conduct these reviews. Second, using the pre-defined primary and secondary criteria, interventions were prioritised for systematic review.Study

[Histamine in regulation of bone remodeling processes].

Bone remodeling is under autocrine, paracrine, endocrine and central nervous system control. One of the potential endogenous factors affecting bone remodeling is histamine, an endogenous amine which acts as a mediator of allergic reactions and neuromediator, and induces production of gastric acid. Histamine H₁ receptor antagonists are widely used in the treatment of allergic conditions, H₂ receptor antagonists in peptic ulcer disease, and betahistine (an H₃ receptor antagonist and H₁ receptor agonist) is used in the treatment of Ménière's disease. Excess histamine release in mastocytosis and a

Influence of histaminergic receptors on denervated canine gracilis muscle vascular tone during endotoxemia.

The purpose of this study was to determine if endogenously released histamine and its non-neural interaction with the H1- and H2-histaminergic receptors in the peripheral vasculature can account for the decompensatory loss of peripheral vascular tone associated with the hypotension occurring during endotoxemia. A denervated in situ constant flow double canine gracilis muscle preparation that permitted one muscle to serve as a control (GMc) for the contralateral experimental muscle (GMe) was used. Endotoxemia was induced by intravenous infusion of 2 mg.kg-1.30 min-1 endotoxin. The specific H1 a

Innovations in conservative and surgical therapy for Ménière's disease-narrative review.

Ménière's disease (MD) is an inner ear disorder of poorly understood etiology, and its management remains symptomatic. This review presents novel therapeutic approaches to control vertigo, improve audiological function, and enhance patient outcomes in MD. The literature was reviewed to explore conservative and surgical methods under current investigation. Recent advances in pharmacological therapy target oxidative stress, immune-mediated pathways, and neuromodulatory mechanisms. Clinical trial reports evaluating the efficacy of new oral treatment-ebselen were included. Preliminary report descr

A pilot study on early microgliogenesis following unilateral vestibular neurectomy: A key player in vestibular compensation?

Following unilateral vestibular damage, several behavioral deficits arise, referred to as vestibular syndrome. At the central level the vestibular syndrome is associated with an imbalance in neuronal activity between the two vestibular nuclei (VN). Its recovery is correlated with a rebalancing of the electrophysiological activity between both VN, known as vestibular compensation. Key plasticity mechanisms within the VN involved in this mechanism include, among others, neurogliogenesis, modulation of neuronal excitability and increased histamine release. In this study, we aimed to characterize

Vestibular schwannoma presenting as vestibular neuritis-like attack during the COVID-19 pandemic: A case report.

RATIONALE: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a benign tumor commonly presenting with progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, and disequilibrium. However, in rare cases, it can mimic acute vestibular syndromes such as vestibular neuritis. Early recognition of such atypical presentations is essential for accurate diagnosis and timely management. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 54-year-old woman experienced a sudden onset of sustained vertigo lasting 2 days without accompanying hearing loss or tinnitus. She had no prior history of vertigo. DIAGNOSES: Neurotological assessments showed direction-fixed, horizontal-to

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in tinnitus with normal hearing in association with combined treatment.

Tinnitus is a phantom perception of sound in the absence of overt acoustic stimulation. The focus of our attention is a combined therapy of tinnitus. In this prospective study (2013-2014) we evaluated the data of normal-hearing patients with tinnitus treated with various treatment modalities. In Group 1 we evaluated the data of 84 patients/124 ears after six weeks of treatment with betahistine dihydrochloride (72 mg). In Group 2, we evaluated the data of 36 patients/ 55 ears unimproved from Group 1 who were then treated for six weeks with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy combined with gingko b

Structural Brain Abnormalities, Diagnostic Approaches, and Treatment Strategies in Vertigo: A Case-Control Study.

Background/Objectives: Dizziness is a frequent medical complaint with neurological, otolaryngological, and psychological origins. Imaging studies such as CT (Computer Tomography), cervical X-rays, and ultrasound aid diagnosis, while MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is crucial for detecting brain abnormalities. Our purpose is to identify structural brain changes associated with vertigo, assess pre-MRI diagnostic approaches, and evaluate treatment strategies. Methods: A case-control study of 232 vertigo patients and 232 controls analyzed MRI findings, pre-MRI examinations, symptoms, and treatmen

[Possible effect of diabetes and hypertension on the quality of life of patients suffering from Ménière's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Ménière's disease is a disorder of the inner ear, characterized by episodic rotational vertigo, sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, aural pressure and vegetative symptoms. Since the improvement of these symptoms exerts an influence on the patients' quality of life and the condition seems to be incurable, the symptomatic treatment suggests an important question. AIM: Our study's aim is to evaluate how hypertension and diabetes exert influence on the patients' quality of life and how effective conservative pharmacologic treatment is. According to our assumption, both comorbiditi
