Ukrainians under continuous traumatic stress: towards increasing the diagnostic condition's clinical utility.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization would include a diagnosis of Continuous Traumatic Stress (ConTS) Reaction or Disorder in its ICD-11 classification system if there were more empirical evidence to support it. However, research on people experiencing ongoing traumatic experiences is always difficult from an ethical standpoint. Our modest study re-examined the structural validity of the Goral et al. CTS (2021) questionnaire and some predictive relationships in samples of Ukrainians in their home country compared to externally displaced Ukrainians (to Austria). METHOD: N = 46 Ukrainians

War-related continuous traumatic stress as a potential mediator of associations between moral distress and professional quality of life in nurses: a cross-sectional study in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of 2022, Central Europe entered a state of emergency due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nurses were particularly vulnerable to a decline in their professional quality of life, facing repeated exposure to military trauma, ethical dilemmas, prolonged working hours, and increased stress and fatigue. This study aimed to contribute to our understanding of the potential mediating effect of war-related continuous traumatic stress on the association between moral distress and professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, repre

Suicide risk among combatants: The longitudinal contributions of pre-enlistment characteristics, pre-deployment personality factors and moral injury.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) in deployment situations facilitates higher suicide risk among combatants. However, knowledge about pre-deployment factors that may moderate the negative contribution of PMIEs to suicide risk is rare. In this prospective study, we examined pre-enlistment characteristics and pre-deployment personality factors as possible moderators in the link between exposure to self, other, and betrayal dimensions of PMIEs and post-deployment suicide risk among Israeli active-duty combatants. METHODS: A sample

Believe #metoo: sexual violence and interpersonal disclosure experiences among women attending a sexual assault service in Australia: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVES: Sexual abuse is a strong predictor of future psychiatric problems. A more nuanced qualitative understanding of mental health outcomes, in the context of interpersonal responses from family members towards survivors after sexual abuse, may help to better inform prevention and interventions. DESIGN: A mixed-methods approach included a qualitative timeline method to map and identify contextual factors and mediating emotional responses associated with mental disorder following sexual abuse. SETTING: Participants were adult survivors of sexual abuse, seeking support from the Sexual As

A Critical Review: Moral Injury in Nurses in the Aftermath of a Patient Safety Incident.

BACKGROUND: To date, there has been no published work towards understanding or classifying patient safety incidents (PSIs) or their aftermath as potential morally injurious experiences (pMIEs). A morally injurious experience is one that violates deeply held moral values and beliefs, and can put an individual at risk for burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other trauma-related problems. This can also set the stage for moral injury, which can occur when there has been a betrayal of what is right by someone in a position of legitimate authority, or by one's self, in a high-stakes situati

The relationship between childhood adversity, recent stressors, and depression in college students attending a South African university.

BACKGROUND: College students are at risk of depression. This risk may be increased by the experience of childhood adversity and/or recent stressors. This study examined the association between reported experiences of childhood adversity, recent stressors and depression during the last 12 months in a cohort of South African university students. METHODS: Six hundred and eighty-six first year students at Stellenbosch University in South Africa completed a health-focused e-survey that included items on childhood adversity, recent stressors and mood. Assessment of depression and anxiety after exposure to psychological trauma among females in Jordan: A cross-sectional study.

Patients who have been exposed to psychological trauma during their lifetime, regardless of the severity of the trauma, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. However, there are limited data on the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders among females after exposure to trauma in Jordan. This is a cross-sectional study using an online survey that was conducted between the start of April 2025 and the end of June 2025. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaires were used to evaluate depression and anxiety after exposure to psychologi

Identity in turmoil: Investigating the morally injurious dimensions of minority stress.

Background: Sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) are at an increased risk for developing mental health disorders due to their socially stigmatized identities. Minority stress (i.e. discrimination, identity nondisclosure, internalized stigma) has been shown to impact mental health outcomes among SGMs. Both distal and proximal minority stressors may serve as potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which may lead to moral injury and trauma/stressor-related symptoms. Critically, minority stress-related moral injury among SGMs has never before been explored using a mixed-methods approach.Metho

An HIV Narrative of Female Inmates With a Lifetime History of Mental Illness in Durban, South Africa.

Introduction: South Africa (SA) has one of the highest prevalence rates of Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) globally, with women carrying a larger burden of the disease. Furthermore, female inmates have higher rates of HIV compared to their male counterparts, with an over-representation of mental illnesses among female inmates as well. Additionally, mental illnesses are highly prevalent in people living with HIV, with HIV and mental illness sharing a complex bidirectional relationship. This study, which forms part of a larger two-phased, mixed-methods study, describes the experiences of con

Experiencing Trauma During or Before Pregnancy: Qualitative Secondary Analysis After Two Disasters.

BACKGROUND: Despite the existing knowledge about stress, trauma and pregnancy and maternal stress during natural disasters, little is known about what types of trauma pregnant or preconception women experience during these disasters. In May 2016, the worst natural disaster in modern Canadian history required the evacuation of nearly 90,000 residents of the Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo (FMWB) area of northern Alberta. Among the thousands of evacuees were an estimated 1850 women who were pregnant or soon to conceive. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated areas of the United States including

Moral Injury in Gaza: The Impact on Healthcare Professionals.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prolonged blockade, repeated attacks on health facilities, and extreme resource scarcity place Gaza's clinicians in situations that routinely violate core professional and personal values. We measured the prevalence, character, and functional consequences of moral injury among health-care workers who have remained in Gaza since hostilities escalated in October 2023. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey incorporated a 6-item events subscale adapted from the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES) and an 8-item outcomes subscale adapted from the Moral Injury Outcome Scale (MIO

Exploring the Impact of Home-Based Support on Informal Caregivers: A Qualitative Study in Hyderabad, Pakistan.

Background An aging population in Pakistan is relying more and more on informal caregivers as organized elder care systems are hard to come by. In cities such as Hyderabad, caregiving is largely a family-oriented responsibility, and it is deeply rooted in culture and religion. Women disproportionately shoulder the burden of caregiving and experience emotional, physical, and financial distress as a result. While the global literature acknowledges caregiving as fundamental to health systems, there is scant research evidence on the experiences of caregivers in low-resource South Asian settings. T

Functional/dissociative seizures in a single women's rehabilitation center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: a single-center case series and thematic analysis of neuropsychiatric presentation, cultural meaning, and structural barriers to care.

BACKGROUND: Functional/dissociative seizures (FDS; previously termed psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, PNES) are disabling functional neurological events associated with trauma, dissociation, psychiatric comorbidity, impaired functioning, and increased mortality. In sub-Saharan Africa, limited access to video-electroencephalography (video-EEG), limited specialist services, and culturally embedded explanatory models complicate recognition and treatment. To our knowledge, there are no published Ethiopian case-based studies of FDS employing structured clinical formulation and thematic analysis.

Struggling in the dehumanized world of COVID-An exploratory mixed-methods study of frontline healthcare workers' experiences.

AIM: To explore healthcare workers' experiences of the changed caring reality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. DESIGN: An online fully mixed-methods design. METHODS: A web-based self-reported questionnaire with fixed and open-ended answers collected data from March to April 2021, analysed in three steps. First, free-text questions were analysed by qualitative content analysis. Then quantitative linear regression analyses using models covering stress and coping mechanisms were conducted. Finally, a meta-inference of qualitative and quantitative data emerged a new comprehensive understa

The centrality of victimization. Regaining the focal point of recovery for survivors of child sexual abuse.

Psychiatrists have tended to be reluctant followers rather than leaders in the proliferation of concern for child abuse that has developed over the past 25 years. By discounting the relevance of child sexual trauma, psychiatric clinicians and theoreticians overlook not only the therapeutic needs of many survivors but the opportunity to reconceptualize the role of trauma in the etiology and treatment of conditions presumed to be incurable. Present controversies over child sexual abuse are mirrors of past misadventures with uncovering. Since 1860, child abuse has been discovered and then discred

Morally Injurious Experiences and Emotions of Health Care Professionals During the COVID-19 Pandemic Before Vaccine Availability.

IMPORTANCE: Moral injury in health care professionals (HPs) has worsened over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The trauma and burnout associated with moral injury has profound implications for the mental health of HPs. OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential factors associated with moral injury for HPs who were involved in patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, prior to the availability of vaccines. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this qualitative study, HPs were actively recruited to participate in a survey via snowball sampling via email and social media in 2 phases of 5

Development of a Group Psychotherapy for Combat Veterans With Moral Injury: Protocol for a User-Centered Study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) seek treatment for traumas involving potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which involve acts of commission, omission, or betrayal that deeply transgress one's sense of right and wrong. The sequelae of exposure to PMIEs, called "moral injury," are associated with functional and psychiatric impairment and disrupt veterans' sense of identity and meaning, ability to connect with and trust others, and engender disturbing guilt, shame, rage, and disgust. Currently, no first-line treatments directly ad
