Intestinal obstruction caused by potato bezoar in infancy: a report of three cases.

We present a report of three young infants with unusual intestinal obstruction caused by potato bezoar. They presented with vomiting, irritable crying, and abdominal distention. Barium gastrointestinal series clearly revealed intraluminal filling defect in the duodenum in two cases and ileum in one. Those bezoars in the pylorus and duodenal bulb were all successfully retrieved endoscopically. The patient's abdominal symptoms subsided after the bezoars were eliminated; no subsequent gastrointestinal events occurred in the following months. The authors believe that the occurrence of these cases

Gastric bezoar after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Gastric bezoar is an uncommon complication following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP). We report two cases of bezoar formation that occurred following laparoscopic RYGBPs. In both cases, the patients presented with abdominal pain, nausea, and "frothy" vomiting. The patients were successfully treated by endoscopic fragmentation and removal of the bezoar.

Gastric bezoar complicating laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and review of literature.

Gastric bezoars may be formed in the normal stomach as a result of foreign body consecrations of various objects with inability to pass through the pylorus. Classically, most bezoars occur as a complication of gastric surgery which creates a low acid environment, decreased peristalsis, and abnormal pyloric function. Bariatric surgery has been associated with a low incidence of bezoar formation. However, to date there has been no documentation of bezoars occurring after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, which is one of the surgical options available for the treatment of morbid obesity. Charcoal bezoar. Small-bowel obstruction secondary to amitriptyline overdose therapy.

Nasogastric administration of activated charcoal is effective in decreasing the half-life of amitriptyline. A case is reported in which this therapy for amitriptyline overdose led to charcoal bezoar formation and small-bowel obstruction. Amitriptyline's atropinic side effects on the gut make this a possible complication in such patients.

Small bowel obstruction from an antacid bezoar: a ranitidine-antacid interaction?

A 63-year-old man had an acute small bowel obstruction while being treated with ranitidine and self-prescribed antacid. On exploration, a firm mass, chemically similar to the ingested antacid, was found impacted in the terminal ileum. We believe the effect of ranitidine on gastric secretory volume was the cause of the antacid concretion.

Nonoperative management of persimmon bezoar. A successful modification of traditional papain therapy.

The soft phytobezoars occurring in the postoperative stomach may be readily removed by enzyme digestion and manipulation. In contrast, the persimmon bezoar (diospyrobezoar) has been persistently to such treatment and has required surgical removal. Experience with unsuccessful attempts at enzyme digestion in a number of such patients led to the experimental use of a "soaking" technic which satisfactorily dissolved two of three large persimmon bezoars and shrank the remaining foreign body sufficiently so that it could be removed endoscopically by way of the esophagus. A concomitant gastric ulcer

Rare gastric bezoar in a school-aged child: a paediatric diagnostic conundrum.

A healthy toddler presented with a 1-month history of constipation and was started on laxatives. Four years later, the patient returned with an abdominal mass and pain, but no vomiting, diarrhoea or hard stools. An ultrasound showed a thickened hyperechoic wall with acoustic shadowing in the epigastric region and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Routine laboratory tests were normal. Laxatives were reintroduced, and a follow-up ultrasound 3 months later still indicated an abdominal mass. Five months afterwards, the CT scan suggested a bezoar, leading to a referral to the paediatric surgical uni

Gastric coconut bezoar following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Coconut bezoars are rare causes of gastrointestinal obstruction, particularly in patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Altered gastric motility and anatomical changes after bariatric surgery predispose patients to the accumulation of indigestible fibers. We report the case of a 45-year-old female who presented one year after RYGB with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Upper endoscopy revealed a coconut bezoar in the gastric pouch, which was successfully treated with endoscopic mechanical fragmentation and extraction. The patient recovered fully without surgical inter

A Rare Case Report on Bowel Obstruction due to Seed Bezoar at the Rectum.

Bezoars are rare gastrointestinal masses composed of indigestible substances, typically found in the stomach but at times occurring at more distal locations. Rectal seed bezoars are particularly unusual and manifest with nonspecific gastrointestinal complaints, predisposing to making the diagnosis difficult and delaying appropriate therapy. We describe a case of a 68-year-old female presenting with acute constipation, tenderness of the rectum, and per-rectal bleeding. The patient had a history of recent consumption of approximately 100 g of sunflower seeds. Examination and imaging of the abdom

Gastric bezoar entering the duodenum causing intestinal obstruction: A case report.

RATIONALE: Gastric bezoar-induced duodenal obstruction represents a rare clinical entity with <0.5% incidence among mechanical bowel obstructions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 73-year-old female patient presented to our institution, manifesting acute abdominal syndrome characterized by progressive pain and distension. DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography demonstrated a 3.5 cm intraluminal phytobezoar at the duodenal horizontal segment and proximal small bowel dilatation; Intraoperative: Bezoar impaction 60 cm from the ileocecal valve. INTERVENTIONS: Initial conservative therapy included: fasting, anti-inf

A plastic bezoar causing bowel obstruction: A case of table cover ingestion.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: A bezoar is an indigestible food or other material within the gastrointestinal tract. It can be ingested intentionally or accidentally. The small bowel bezoar prevalence ranges between 0.4 % and 4 %, and the prevalence is less than 0.5 % for gastric bezoars. There are different types of bezoars, but the mention of a plastic bezoar rarely appears in the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a plastic bezoar in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old woman was admitted for acute kidney injury, and while working her up

Keto-Bezoar: Adverse Event Related to Initiation of Ketogenic Diet in an Infant.

The ketogenic diet is frequently used as part of the treatment regimen for pediatric patients with refractory epilepsy. This diet is generally well tolerated, with constipation being the most described side effect. This case highlights a previously undocumented severe complication of a "keto-bezoar" formation related to the initiation of the ketogenic diet in a young infant.

Clinical characteristics and indications for surgery for bezoar-induced small bowel obstruction.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and indications for surgery for bezoar-induced small bowel obstruction (BI-SBO). METHODS: Forty patients with BI-SBO were treated at our hospital from January 2017 to December 2019, and these patients' clinical and computed tomography (CT) data were analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-seven and 13 BI-SBO patients constituted the non-ST group and ST group, respectively. The clinical manifestations of BI-SBO in both groups were abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and lack of defecation. Comparing the non-ST vs ST groups, respectively: mean age (years):

Multi-route antifungal administration in the management of urinary Candida glabrata bezoar.

A 65-year-old lady was admitted with urosepsis and imaging suggesting right sided hydronephrosis secondary to a filling defect consistent with a fungal bezoar. An indwelling urinary catheter and a right percutaneous nephrostomy tube were inserted. Candida glabrata cultured from urine was resistant to fluconazole. Amphotericin B was instilled into the renal pelvis via the nephrostomy tube while intravenous liposomal amphotericin was administered daily along with oral flucytosine. This multi-modal antifungal administration was continued for 14 days. Clinical and biochemical improvement was achie

Cecum perforation associated with a calcium polystyrene sulfonate bezoar - a rare entity.

Hyperkalemia is one of the most common electrolyte disorders, responsible for a high number of adverse outcomes, including life-threatening arrhythmias. Potassium binders are largely prescribed drugs used for hyperkalemia treatment but unfortunately, there are many adverse events associated with its use, mostly gastrointestinal. Identification of patients at highest risk for the serious complications associated with the current potassium binders, such as colon necrosis and perforation, could prevent fatal outcomes. The authors present a case of a 56-year-old man with secondary diabetes and chr
