Haemodynamic consequences of changing bicarbonate and calcium concentrations in haemodialysis fluids.

BACKGROUND: In a previous study we demonstrated that mild metabolic alkalosis resulting from standard bicarbonate haemodialysis induces hypotension. In this study, we have further investigated the changes in systemic haemodynamics induced by bicarbonate and calcium, using non-invasive procedures. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial with a single-blind, crossover design, we sequentially changed the dialysate bicarbonate and calcium concentrations (between 26 and 35 mmol/l for bicarbonate and either 1.25 or 1.50 mmol/l for calcium). Twenty-one patients were enrolled for a total of 756 dia

Simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification by microwave reactor with ammonium bicarbonate and zeolite.

Microwave reactor with ammonium bicarbonate (NH(4)HCO(3)) and zeolite was set up to study the simultaneous removal of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) from flue gas. The results showed that the microwave reactor filled with NH(4)HCO(3) and zeolite could reduce SO(2) to sulfur with the best desulfurization efficiency of 99.1% and reduce NO(x) to nitrogen with the best NO(x) purifying efficiency of 86.5%. Microwave desulfurization and denitrification effect of the experiment using ammonium bicarbonate and zeolite together is much higher than that using ammonium bicarbonate or z

Does sodium-bicarbonate ingestion improve simulated judo performance?

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether preexercise sodium-bicarbonate ingestion improves judo-related performance. The study used 2 different protocols to evaluate performance: 3 bouts of a specific judo test (n = 9) and 4 bouts of the Wingate test for upper limbs (n = 14). In both protocols athletes ingested 0.3 g/kg of sodium bicarbonate or placebo 2 h before the tests. Blood samples were collected to determine lactate level, and levels of perceived exertion were measured throughout the trials. The study used a double-blind, counterbalanced, crossover design. Ingestion of so

Water structure and its influence on the flotation of carbonate and bicarbonate salts.

Interfacial water structure is a most important parameter that influences the collector adsorption by salt minerals such as borax, potash and trona. According to previous studies, salts can be classified as water structure makers and water structure breakers. Water structure making and breaking properties of salt minerals in their saturated brine solutions are essential to explain their flotation behavior. In this work, water structure making-breaking studies in solutions of carbonate and bicarbonate salts (Na(2)CO(3), K(2)CO(3), NaHCO(3) and NH(4)HCO(3)) in 4 wt% D(2)O in H(2)O mixtures have

SLC26 transporters and the inhibitory control of pancreatic ductal bicarbonate secretion.

SLC26 anion exchangers (probably SLC26A3 and SLC26A6) are expressed on the apical membrane of pancreatic duct cells and play a key role in HCO3- secretion; a process that is inhibited by the neuropeptide, substance P (SP). SP had no effect on basolateral HCO3- transporters in the duct cell or on CFTR Cl- channels, but inhibited a Cl- -dependent HCO3- efflux step on the apical membrane. In microperfused ducts, luminal H2DIDS (0.5mM) caused intracellular pH to alkalinize (consistent with inhibition of HCO3- efflux) and, like SP, inhibited HCO3- secretion. SP did not reduce HCO3- secretion furthe

Intralipid outperforms sodium bicarbonate in a rabbit model of clomipramine toxicity.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Previous investigators have demonstrated amelioration of lipid-soluble drug toxidromes with infusion of lipid emulsions. Clomipramine is a lipid-soluble tricyclic antidepressant with significant cardiovascular depressant activity in human overdose. We compare resuscitation with Intralipid versus sodium bicarbonate in a rabbit model of clomipramine toxicity. METHODS: Thirty sedated and mechanically ventilated New Zealand White rabbits were infused with clomipramine at 320 mg/kg per hour. At target mean arterial pressure of 50% initial mean arterial pressure, animals were rescu

Gout induced by intoxication of sodium bicarbonate in Korean native broilers.

Gout is a metabolic disorder that results in hyperuricemia and the deposition of positively birefringent monosodium urate crystals in various parts of the body. Intoxication of sodium bicarbonate (SBC) for 35 days in Korean native broilers was investigated. Sixty birds, aged 2 weeks, divided into 5 groups were exposed to excess SBC: 2 g/L (group A), 7.5 g/L (group B), 20 g/L (group C), 40 g/L (group D). Toxicopathological examination of all exposed birds revealed the manifestation of visceral and articular gout in group C, while birds of group D showed acute kidney damage with manifestation of

Bicarbonate transport along the loop of Henle: molecular mechanisms and regulation.

The loop of Henle (LOH) is an important site of renal tubule acidification. A combination of several techniques, including in vivo microperfusion, perfusion in vitro of the S3 segment of the proximal tubule and of the thick ascending limb (TAL) of Henle's loop, as well as quantitative PCR performed on isolated TAL, has permitted the definition of key transporters and their role in modulating bicarbonate reabsorption in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Na(+)-H+ exchange is the most important transport mechanism responsible for bicarbonate reabsorption, although a small but signi

Uses and abuses of sodium bicarbonate in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Despite the lack of evidence for its effectiveness in the treatment of acid-base disturbances in critically ill patients of all ages, and despite several lines of evidence that indicate it might be dangerous, bicarbonate therapy is used routinely in many neonatal intensive care units. The justification for the persistent use of this controversial therapy comes from a variety of sources, many based more in philosophy than in science. Clinicians contemplating the use of bicarbonate therapy should consider what they expect the intervention to accomplish and what evidence exists that their therape

NO metabolites accumulate in erythrocytes in proportion to carbon dioxide and bicarbonate concentration.

It is not known whether the ratio between the concentrations of NO metabolites (NOx) in plasma (pNOx) and in erythrocytes (eNOx) is constant or correlates with chemical parameters of the blood. We measured pH, PO(2), and PCO(2) and calculated bicarbonate concentration in 19 blood samples from the aorta, coronary sinus, and leg veins of 7 dogs. Erythrocytes were then separated by centrifugation and lysed with distilled water, and the lysate was ultrafiltered with a molecular cutoff of 50 kDa to remove the hemoglobin. NOx were measured in plasma and in the ultrafiltrate. NOx concentration was hi

Assessment of biliary bicarbonate secretion in humans by positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Positron emission tomography (PET) allows imaging and quantitative analysis of organ functions in basal and stimulated conditions. We have applied this method to the study of biliary bicarbonate secretion in humans. METHODS: PET was performed in 5 healthy subjects and 13 patients with hepatobiliary disorders after intravenous injection of NaH11CO3. In each case the study was performed in basal conditions and after secretin stimulation. Positron emission from the hepatic area was scanned, and normalized uptake values for parenchymal and hilar regions were estimated. RESULTS

Indirect evidence for cholinergic inhibition of intestinal bicarbonate absorption in humans.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that in the fasting state, proximal intestinal HCO3- absorption, which depends on villus Na+/H+ exchanger activity, is tonically inhibited by a cholinergic atropine sensitive mechanism. SUBJECTS: The experiments were performed in 34 healthy volunteers and in eight patients with intestinal villus atrophy. METHODS: HCO3- absorption was measured with a modified triple lumen perfusion technique in the distal duodenum, the most proximal portion of the small intestine. The study was designed to compensate for the inhibitory effects of atr

Effect of omeprazole on gastric bicarbonate secretion in patients with duodenal ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Omeprazole, a H+/K+ ATPase inhibitor, has been shown to reduce gastric bicarbonate secretion in cats. However, there has been no study on the effect of omeprazole on bicarbonate secretion in patients with duodenal ulcer (DU). METHODS: Fifteen men with duodenal ulcer (mean age 38 years, range 22-57) were included. Baseline gastric acid output, bicarbonate secretion, and parietal and nonparietal secretions were estimated before and after omeprazole therapy (20 mg/day) for four weeks. RESULTS: Omeprazole administration did not significantly alter bicarbonate secretion (3.3 [1.2] vs

PACAPs stimulate duodenal bicarbonate secretion at PACAP receptors in the rat.

We investigated the effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptides (PACAPs) on gastroduodenal HCO(3)- secretion in anesthetized rats and characterized their effects by comparison with the effects of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). Under urethan anesthesia, a rat proximal duodenal loop or a rat stomach mounted in an ex vivo chamber (in the absence of acid secretion) was perfused with saline, and HCO(3)- secretion was measured at pH 7.0 using a pH-stat method and by addition of 10 mM HCl. Intravenous injection of PACAP-27 stimulated HCO(3)- secretion in a dose-dependent

Bicarbonate secretion in interlobular ducts from guinea-pig pancreas.

1. The transport of HCO3- across the luminal membrane of pancreatic duct cells was studied by monitoring the luminal pH of isolated guinea-pig interlobular ducts after microinjection of an extracellular fluoroprobe, the dextran conjugate of 2'7'-bis(2-carboxyethyl)-5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (BCECF-dextran). Luminal Cl- concentration was also measured by microfluorometry following microinjection of the dextran conjugates of 6-methoxy-N-(4-aminoalkyl)quinolinium bromide (ABQ-dextran) and Cl-NERF (Cl-NERF-dextran). 2. When HCO3-/CO2 was admitted to the bath, a transient acidification of the duct lu

[Gastroduodenal bicarbonate secretion: pharmacological modulation and contribution to mucosal protection].

Bicarbonate secretion from the surface epithelial cells of the gastroduodenal mucosa is an active process depending upon the tissue metabolism and plays an important role as the first line of defense in mucosal protection in collaboration with the mucus gel. This secretion is regulated by humoral and neural factors as well as endogenous prostaglandins (PGs) and is considered to be intracellularly mediated by cyclic AMP in the duodenum and by cyclic GMP in the stomach. Ca2 also acts as an intracellular mediator in this process. This bicarbonate secretion is markedly increased in response to lum

Intracerebroventricular secretin enhances pancreatic volume and bicarbonate response in rats.

BACKGROUND: Although secretin has been found within the brain, its central role in pancreatic exocrine function has not been previously addressed. The hypothesis that intracerebroventricular secretin enhances pancreatic volume and bicarbonate output at doses that have no effect when given intravenously was tested. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats had a cannula stereotactically placed into the left lateral cerebral ventricle 24 hours before study. At laparotomy the bile and pancreatic ducts were separately cannulated and excluded for tared collections and bicarbonate assay. RESULTS: Increasing do

On the mechanism of bicarbonate exit from renal proximal tubular cells.

We compare here the results of electrophysiological measurements on proximal tubular cells performed on rat kidney in vivo and on isolated rabbit and rat tubules in vitro. Based on different effects of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors in the in vivo and in vitro preparation, we conclude that NaHCO3 cotransport across the basolateral cell membrane functions as Na(+)-CO3(2-)-HCO3- cotransport in vivo, but as Na(+)-HCO3(-)-HCO3- cotransport in the classical in vitro preparation. The former, but not the latter, transport mode is characterized by generation of local disequilibrium pH/CO3(2-) concentra
