Sociodemographic and Clinical Correlates of Missed Opportunities for Evidence-Based Alcohol Counseling Among Adults Who Report Binge Drinking.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use contributes to over 178,000 annual U.S. deaths, yet provider-delivered alcohol counseling remains underutilized. Guided by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework, this study examines multilevel determinants of alcohol counseling receipt among adults who binge drink. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 2022 National Health Interview Survey data analyzed in 2025 included 3,093 U.S. adults with chronic conditions who reported binge drinking. Variables spanning 3 National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities

Binge drinking acutely induces hepatic steatosis which is readily reversible: A real-world observational study in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Binge drinking is a common pattern of alcohol intake often considered particularly harmful. However, its immediate effects on the development of hepatic steatosis and early alcohol-related liver injury are not well established. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of binge drinking on the liver and its reversibility in healthy individuals. METHODS: Healthy adults were studied in a real-world setting before, the day after, and 10 days after attending a 3-day festival. The participants were alcohol abstinent 1 week prior to the first visit and between the last tw

Sex differences in binge drinking-related higher morning cortisol levels and in prospective association with future alcohol intake.

AIMS: Peripheral cortisol represents one biological measure of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a significant component of the stress system, which is altered by chronic alcohol consumption. However, whether heavy alcohol use affects the HPA axis differentially between the sexes and whether basal cortisol levels are a biomarker of prospective alcohol intake is unknown. METHODS: We recruited light moderate (LM) and binge-heavy (BH) drinkers of alcohol (n = 118). Repeated fasting morning cortisol levels were studied over a 2-hour period to assess basal levels while participants un

Intra-dorsolateral striatal AMPA receptor antagonism reduces binge-like alcohol drinking in male and female C57BL/6J mice.

The dorsolateral striatum (DLS) is involved in addiction, reward, and alcohol related behaviors. The DLS primarily receives excitatory inputs which are gated by post-synaptic AMPA receptors. We antagonized AMPA receptors in the DLS to investigate how such modulation affects binge-like alcohol drinking in male and female C57BL/6J mice and whether an associated alcohol drinking history alters dorsomedial striatum (DMS) and DLS AMPA receptor expression. We also investigated the effect of intra-DLS NBQX on locomotor activity and saccharin drinking in mice. Mice were allowed free access to 20% alco

Effect of Victimization on Impulse Control and Binge Drinking among Serious Juvenile Offenders from Adolescence to Young Adulthood.

A vast literature has found longitudinal effects of early life stress on substance use and self-regulatory processes. These associations may vary by period-specific development among youth involved in the juvenile justice system. The current study used an accelerated longitudinal design and auto-regressive latent trajectory with structure residuals (ALT-SR) model to examine the within-person cross-lagged associations between binge drinking, impulse control, and victimization from 15 to 25 years of age. A large sample (N = 1100) of justice-involved youth were followed longitudinally for 7 years

Binge Drinking of Ethanol during Adolescence Induces Oxidative Damage and Morphological Changes in Salivary Glands of Female Rats.

This study investigates morphological and biochemistry effects of binge ethanol consumption in parotid (PG) and submandibular (SG) salivary glands of rats from adolescence to adulthood. Female Wistar rats (n = 26) received ethanol at 3 g/kg/day (20% w/v) for 3 consecutive days/week from the 35th until the 62nd day of life. Animals were treated in two periods: 1 week (G1) and 4 weeks (G2), with a control (treated with distilled water) and an ethanol group to each period. In morphological analysis, morphometric and immunohistochemistry evaluation for smooth muscle actin (αSMA), cytokeratin-18 (C

Genome-wide analysis of the nucleus accumbens identifies DNA methylation signals differentiating low/binge from heavy alcohol drinking.

Alcohol-use disorders encompass a range of drinking levels and behaviors, including low, binge, and heavy drinking. In this regard, investigating the neural state of individuals who chronically self-administer lower doses of alcohol may provide insight into mechanisms that prevent the escalation of alcohol use. DNA methylation is one of the epigenetic mechanisms that stabilizes adaptations in gene expression and has been associated with alcohol use. Thus, we investigated DNA methylation, gene expression, and the predicted neural effects in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) of male rhesus macaq

Past-month binge drinking and cannabis use among middle-aged and older adults in the United States, 2015-2019.

The aging United States population, which includes the large Baby Boomer generation, is leading to an increasing number of middle-aged and older adults who engage in psychoactive substance use. Due to the size of this cohort, and their changing attitudes around psychoactive substance use, there has been a sharp increase in prevalence of past-month cannabis use among adults aged ≥50; however, little is understood about recent trends in the use of both cannabis and excess alcohol use, such as binge drinking, in this population. The current use of both alcohol and cannabis has important health im

Body mass index and serum levels of soluble leptin receptor are sex-specifically related to alcohol binge drinking behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Binge drinking is a highly prevalent behavior in adolescents and young adults and a risk factor to develop alcohol use disorder. Body mass index (BMI) and blood levels of leptin peptide and its soluble receptor have been implicated in alcohol use disorder; however, their role in binge drinking remains to be investigated. METHOD: We studied associations of BMI, serum levels of soluble leptin receptor (ObRe) and leptin as well as the free leptin index with binge drinking in 93 male and 99 female young adults. RESULTS: In men, binge drinkers showed significantly higher BMI (kg/m2) th

Binge Drinking, Non-injection Drug Use, and Sexual Risk Behaviors among Adolescent Sexual Minority Males, 3 US Cities, 2015.

In 2016, more than 90% of HIV diagnoses among young men aged 13-19 years were attributed to male-male sexual contact. Little is known about how binge drinking and non-injection drug use may be associated with risky sexual behavior among adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM). Using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance, we examined how binge drinking and non-injection drug use may be associated with sexual risk among ASMM. ASMM were recruited for interviews in 3 cities: Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. Among 16-18-year-olds (N = 488), we evaluated the association between

Effects of binge drinking and hangover on response selection sub-processes-a study using EEG and drift diffusion modeling.

Effects of binge drinking on cognitive control and response selection are increasingly recognized in research on alcohol (ethanol) effects. Yet, little is known about how those processes are modulated by hangover effects. Given that acute intoxication and hangover seem to be characterized by partly divergent effects and mechanisms, further research on this topic is needed. In the current study, we hence investigated this with a special focus on potentially differential effects of alcohol intoxication and subsequent hangover on sub-processes involved in the decision to select a response. We do

Cardiac Glycogen Fluctuations Are Robust in Short-Term Than Long-Term Binge Drinking and Follows a Sex Specific Manner.

Drinking behavior, especially binge drinking, has a debilitating impact on systemic health. In this study, we report that in the absence of any changes in hepatic lactate dehydrogenase activity, the cardiac glycogen level fluctuates following short-term binge drinking. The change in cardiac glycogen levels follows a sex specific pattern. Our work is first to demonstrate that early metabolic changes in the heart, specifically glycogen levels, can be an ideal readout for forthcoming hepatic and systemic complications following binge drinking at an earlier stage. Also, females demonstrate a robus

Binge drinking alcohol and circadian misalignment in night shift nurses is associated with decreased resiliency to COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: Nurses and other first responders are at high risk of exposure to the SARS-CoV2 virus, and many have developed severe COVID-19 infection. A better understanding of the factors that increase the risk of infection after exposure to the virus could help to address this. Although several risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension have been associated with an increased risk of infection, many first responders develop severe COVID-19 without established risk factors. As inflammation and cytokine storm are the primary mechanisms in severe COVID-19, other factors that promote

Binge drinking during the adolescence period causes oxidative damage-induced cardiometabolic disorders: A possible ameliorative approach with selenium supplementation.

Binge drinking (BD) is the most common alcohol consumption model among adolescents. BD exposure during adolescence disrupts the nervous system function, being involved in the major mortality causes at this age: motor vehicle accidents, homicides and suicides. Recent studies have also shown that BD consumption during adolescence affects liver, renal and cardiovascular physiology, predisposing adolescents to future adult cardiometabolic damage. BD is a particularly pro-oxidant alcohol consumption pattern, because it leads to the production of a great source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via t
