Methylcellulose coating markedly reduces tissue bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the green toad (Bufotes sitibundus).

The increasing environmental release of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles has raised concerns regarding their bioaccumulation and potential ecological impacts in aquatic and semi-aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we investigated whether surface modification with methylcellulose (MC) can reduce the tissue bioaccumulation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the green toad (Bufotes sitibundus). Uncoated Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized via a co-precipitation method, and MC-coated Fe3O4 nanocomposite was prepared. Physicochemical characterization using dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscop

Potentially toxic elements in multi-stressor marine environments: bioaccumulation, ecosystem impacts, and human health implications.

Potentially toxic elements pollution in marine environments is intensifying under anthropogenic activities and climate-driven changes, yet the interactive effects of multiple stressors on metal bioaccumulation, ecosystem health, and human risk remain inadequately synthesized. This review aims to quantitatively integrate multi-stressor interactions involving ocean warming, acidification, and eutrophication with potentially toxic elements dynamics across coastal, estuarine, and open ocean systems. Following PRISMA guidelines, 154 peer-reviewed studies from 652 screened records were synthesized t

Time-Dependent Polystyrene Nanoplastic Toxicity in Cherax quadricarinatus: Oxidative Stress, Gut Dysbiosis, and Hepatopancreatic Bioaccumulation.

Polystyrene nanoplastic (PS-NP) contamination poses an emerging threat to aquaculture species, yet time-resolved assessments integrating host physiology, gut microbial ecology, and tissue bioaccumulation remain limited. Here, we evaluated the temporal effects of 100 mg/L PS-NPs (100 nm) on Cherax quadricarinatus (Von Martens, 1868) over a 3-week exposure period. Crayfish were assigned to a control group (Group A) and three treatment groups exposed for 1 (Group B), 2 (Group C), or 3 (Group D) weeks. No mortality occurred. Antibiotics in northern China's largest shallow wetland lake: Occurrence, bioaccumulation, ecological risk, and indicator screening.

Antibiotics are widespread in aquatic environments due to their extensive use in human healthcare and animal husbandry. However, research on the occurrence and bioaccumulation of antibiotics in aquatic organisms within shallow wetland lakes remains limited. This study investigated the occurrence and bioaccumulation of ten commonly used antibiotics in the Baiyang Lake, northern China's largest shallow wetland lake. The results indicated that sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones were the predominant antibiotics in surface water, whereas fluoroquinolones and macrolides were more prevalent in sedimen

The Tissue-Specific Eco-Exposome: Differential Pharmaceutical Bioaccumulation and Disposition in Fish among Trophic Positions.

Though bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals by aquatic organisms continues to receive scientific attention, the internal disposition of these contaminants among different tissue compartments of fish species has been infrequently investigated, particularly among fish at different trophic positions. We tested a human to fish biological read-across hypothesis for contaminant disposition by examining tissue-specific accumulation in three understudied species, longnose gar (Lepisosteus osseus; piscivore), gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum; planktivore/detritivore), and smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bu

Bioaccumulation profiles of chemical contaminants in fish from the lower Willamette River, Portland Harbor, Oregon.

Twenty-five PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), 15 organochlorine (OC) pesticides, and mercury were determined in fish from the Willamette River in Oregon, including a Portland Harbor superfund site. Fish were collected during the summer of 2000 along a 20-mile stretch of the lower Willamette River. Concentrations of sumPCBs (sum of 25 individually determined PCB congeners) and sumDDTs (sum of p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, and p,p'-DDD) in fish ranged from 14 to 530 and from 18 to 510 ng/g-wet weight, respectively. SumPCBs concentrations at all sites exceeded US EPA fish advisory's screening values. Hexac

Bioaccumulation and behavioral response patterns of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) after carbamazepine exposure and elimination.

The antiepileptic drug carbamazepine (CBZ) has been widely detected in freshwater, yet its toxic actions in fish at multiple endpoints and the subsequent recovery patterns of the impacted are less discussed. This study investigated the bioaccumulation, physiological and behavioral changes of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) following CBZ exposure (G1 = 6.15 μg/L, G2 = 61.5 μg/L, G3 = 615 μg/L, G4 = 6150 μg/L) and subsequent recovery. Our results showed that CBZ was more likely to accumulate in the liver and brain than in the gills. A concentration-dependent phenomenon was observed; however,

First evidence of environmental bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals on adult native anurans (Rhinella arenarum) from Argentina.

The presence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in surface water is well known, whereas their natural occurrence in biota is much less explored. The aim of this work was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of PhACs in adult toads of the neotropical species Rhinella arenarum. Three sites were selected in Buenos Aires (Argentina): a reference site (Site 1), a site with direct discharge from a secondary wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) (Site 2) and a site 300 m downstream of the WWTP discharge (Site 3). Surface water samples, as well as muscle, liver and fat bodies of toads were collected,

Bioaccumulation of dietary CrPic, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in juvenile coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus).

The form of chromium (Cr) is an important factor that influences its bioavailability and potential toxicity, while the difference of Cr bioaccumulation between organic and inorganic Cr has been rarely investigated. The present study compared the bioaccumulation of organic Cr (e.g., chromium picolinate (CrPic)) and inorganic Cr (e.g., trivalent (Cr(III)) and hexavalent (Cr(VI))) in juvenile coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus). The fish were exposed to a gradient level of different forms of dietary Cr for 66 days. Then the Cr bioaccumulation in fish were comparatively quantified between CrPic,

Integrative Computational Approaches to Inform Relative Bioaccumulation Potential of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Across Species.

Predictive toxicology is increasingly reliant on innovative computational methods to address pressing questions in chemicals assessment. Of importance is the evaluation of contaminant impact differences across species to inform ecosystem protection and identify appropriate model species for human toxicity studies. Here we evaluated 2 complementary tools to predict cross-species differences in binding affinity between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the liver fatty acid-binding protein (LFABP): the Sequence Alignment to Predict Across Species Susceptibility (SeqAPASS) tool and mo

Quantum dots exhibit less bioaccumulation than free cadmium and selenium in the earthworm Eisenia andrei.

The present study addresses the bioaccumulation behavior of cadmium selenide quantum dots by Eisenia andrei earthworms in a terrestrial environment. Earthworms were exposed to quantum dot-treated soil for up to 4 wk and analyzed for cadmium and selenium concentration using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results were compared with those from earthworms exposed to cadmium nitrate and selenious acid, as positive controls, and those exposed in untreated soil (negative control). Earthworms exposed to quantum dots showed significant bioaccumulation of cadmium and selenium (5.3- and 1.

Research note: Bioaccumulation of β-N-methylamino-L-alanine and 2,4-diaminobutyric acid in chicken eggs.

β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) and its structural isomer 2,4-diaminobutyric acid (DAB) are non-proteinogenic amino acids known to cause neurotoxicity. Although both compounds have been detected in a range of organisms, their presence in chicken eggs has not been examined. We analyzed egg white and yolk from 30 Swedish eggs obtained from a small-scale producer to assess the bioaccumulation of BMAA and DAB. Both toxins were detected predominantly in egg white. Mean concentrations in egg white were 5.6 ± 3.9 ng g-1 dry weight (DW) for BMAA and 7.1 ± 4.6 ng g-1 DW for DAB, compared with 0.7 ± 1.

Bioaccumulation and biochemical responses to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure in the freshwater benthic leech (Poecilobdella manillensis).

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is a persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFASs) frequently detected in aquatic environments, where its accumulation in sediment-associated organisms raises increasing ecological concern. While PFOS toxicity has been extensively investigated in fish and other conventional model organisms, limited information is available regarding its bioaccumulation behavior and biochemical responses in freshwater benthic annelids. In this study, the medicinal leech Poecilobdella manillensis was used as a sediment-associated model organism to evaluate PFOS accumulati

Bioaccumulation of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and oxidative stress in snapping turtles in New York, USA.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is an anthropogenic chemical found in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) and many consumer products. Despite its environmental ubiquity and persistence, little is known about the effects of PFOS on stress levels in wild animals. Here, we examined PFOS bioaccumulation and correlations between PFOS exposure and oxidative stress in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) downstream of Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York, a known source of AFFF contamination. Maximum concentrations of PFOS were extrapolated as 41.7 ppb and 498 ppb in water and turtle sampl

Nanozyme-driven ratiometric monitoring of uranyl ions in aquatic systems: Mechanisms, environmental validation, and bioaccumulation assessment.

Uranium contamination in aquatic ecosystems poses significant ecological and public health risks due to its chemical toxicity and radiological persistence, highlighting an urgent need for reliable on-site monitoring tools. We present a self-calibrating dual-mode nanozyme platform through a coordination-driven assembly mechanism. Iron-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs) act as a dual-functional probe, combining intrinsic fluorescence with peroxidase-like activity to catalyze oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into yellow-emitting 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). Notably, an inner filter effect (IFE) occur

Bioaccumulation and Oxidative Stress Induced by Organometallic and Ionic Tin Compounds in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Embryos.

Tin, a heavy metal, in trace amounts is believed to play various roles in the biological development of fish, including involvement in cell structure, enzyme activities, and the metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates. Two endocrine-disrupting chemicals, Tributyltin (TBT) and Triphenyltin (TPT), are prevalent in aquatic environments. This study examines the bioaccumulation of these compounds and their impact on oxidative stress enzymes. Zebrafish embryos were used to assess the acute toxicity of TBT, TPT, and SnCl2. Toxicity tests were conducted on fertilized eggs using different concentratio

Post-mortem evidence of microplastic bioaccumulation in human organs: insights from advanced imaging and spectroscopic analysis.

Humans are chronically exposed to airborne particulate matter and environmental microplastics through food, water, and consumer products. These anthropogenic pollutants may accumulate in human tissues, but their distribution and chemical identity remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed samples of human brain, liver, thyroid, kidney, heart, skeletal muscle, and lung tissue collected post-mortem to assess the presence and composition of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs).
