Microbial fuel cell assisted nitrate nitrogen removal using cow manure and soil.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are emerging wastewater treatment systems with a proven potential for denitrification. In this study, we have developed a high-rate denitrifying MFC. The anode consisted of cow manure and fruit waste and the cathode consisted of cow manure and soil. The initial chemical oxygen demand (COD)/nitrate nitrogen (NO3 (-)-N) was varied from 2 to 40 at the cathode while keeping the anode ratio fixed at 100. NO3 (-)-N removal rate of 7.1 ± 0.9 kg NO3 (-)-N/m(3) net cathodic compartment (NCC)/day was achieved at cathode COD/NO3 (-)-N ratio 7.31 with the current density of 190

Removal and recovery of phosphorus as struvite from swine wastewater using microbial fuel cell.

Air-cathode single chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were operated with swine wastewater. The maximum power density, the maximum current density, the average value of COD-removal efficiency, and the coulombic efficiency were 1-2.3 W/m(2), 6.0-7.0 A/m(2), 76-91%, and 37-47%, respectively. During operation, 70-82% of the phosphorus was removed from the influent, and some precipitations were observed on the surface of the liquid side of the cathodes. The amount of phosphorus contained in these precipitates was estimated to be equivalent 4.6-27% of the influent. The main component of these preci

A bioanode based on MWCNT/protein-assisted co-immobilization of glucose oxidase and 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde for glucose fuel cells.

This paper describes an easy-to-prepare, robust bioanode constructed on a polyester-supported screen-printed carbon paste electrode (SPCE) for glucose biofuel cells. To prepare the bioanode, carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were drop-coated on the SPCE first, and then a crosslinked matrix composed of glucose oxidase (GOx), 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHB), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and glutaraldehyde was coated atop the MWCNTs. It was found that the MWCNTs assisted the immobilization of the crosslinked matrix, enhanced the electron-shuttling process, and showed electrocataly

Bioenergy from Coastal bermudagrass receiving subsurface drip irrigation with advance-treated swine wastewater.

Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) may be a potentially important source of bio-based energy in the southern US due to its vast acreage. It is often produced as part of a waste management plan with varying nutrient composition and energy characteristics on fields irrigated with livestock wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of subsurface drip irrigation with treated swine wastewater on both the quantity and quality of bermudagrass bioenergy. The treated wastewater was recycled from an advanced treatment system and used for irrigation of bermudagrass in tw

Biofilm-Activated Enzymatic Biofuel Cell-Based Self-Powered Wound Dressing.

Chronic biofilm infections present a significant threat to human health and survival. Herein, a biofilm-activated enzymatic biofuel cell-based self-powered dressing (EBFC) was constructed for electrotherapy of infected diabetic wounds. The EBFC consisted of a flexible carbonized nonwoven fabric immobilized with lactate oxidase as the bioanode and bilirubin oxidase as the biocathode, respectively, along with a Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LG)-loaded sodium alginate hydrogel as an electrolyte layer. Particularly, the EBFC consumes biofilm extracellular polymeric substances to disrupt biofilm and pro

Reductive electrografting of in situ produced diazopyridinium cations: Tailoring the interface between carbon electrodes and electroactive bacterial films.

Carbon electrodes were functionalized through the reduction of diazopyridinium cations that are produced from in situ diazotization of 2-, 3- and 4-aminopyridine. Diazopyridinium salts were much more rarely employed for surface functionalization than other aryldiazonium derivatives. A study combining X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, ellipsometry, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements and electrochemical analyses demonstrates that films obtained from 4-diazopyridinium cations are hydrophilic, dense, compact but sufficiently thin to preserve fast electronic transfer ra

Concurrent Phosphorus Recovery and Energy Generation in Mediator-Less Dual Chamber Microbial Fuel Cells: Mechanisms and Influencing Factors.

This study investigated the mechanism and key factors influencing concurrent phosphorus (P) recovery and energy generation in microbial fuel cells (MFC) during wastewater treatment. Using a mediator-less dual chamber microbial fuel cell operated for 120 days; P was shown to precipitate as struvite when ammonium and magnesium chloride solutions were added to the cathode chamber. Monitoring data for chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and aeration flow rate showed that a maximum 38% P recovery was achieved; and this corresponds to 1.5 g/L, pH > 8, -550 ± 10 mV a

Fabrication and optimization of bioelectrochemical system using tetracycline-degrading bacterial strains for antibiotic wastewater treatment.

In this study, a microbial fuel cell was constructed using Raoultella sp. XY-1 to efficiently degrade tetracycline (TC) and assess the effectiveness of the electrochemical system. The degradation rate reached 83.2 ± 1.8 % during the 7-day period, in which the system contained 30 mg/L TC, and the degradation pathway and intermediates were identified. Low concentrations of TC enhanced anodic biofilm power production, while high concentrations of TC decreased the electrochemical activity of the biofilm, extracellular polymeric substances, and enzymatic activities associated with electron transfer

Electrode plate-culture methods for colony isolation of exoelectrogens from anode microbiomes.

Exoelectrogens play central roles in microbial fuel cells and other bioelectrochemical systems (BESs), yet their physiological diversity remains largely elusive due to the lack of efficient methods for the isolation from naturally occurring microbiomes. The present study developed an electrode plate-culture (EPC) method that facilitates selective colony formation by exoelectrogens and used it for isolating them from an exoelectrogenic microbiome enriched from paddy-field soil. In an EPC device, the surface of solidified agarose medium was spread with a suspension of a microbiome and covered wi

Metabolic Reconstruction and Modeling Microbial Electrosynthesis.

Microbial electrosynthesis is a renewable energy and chemical production platform that relies on microbial cells to capture electrons from a cathode and fix carbon. Yet despite the promise of this technology, the metabolic capacity of the microbes that inhabit the electrode surface and catalyze electron transfer in these systems remains largely unknown. We assembled thirteen draft genomes from a microbial electrosynthesis system producing primarily acetate from carbon dioxide, and their transcriptional activity was mapped to genomes from cells on the electrode surface and in the supernatant. Enhancing Electricity Generation Using a Laccase-Based Microbial Fuel Cell with Yeast Galactomyces reessii on the Cathode.

The fungi associated with termites secrete enzymes such as laccase (multi-copper oxidase) that can degrade extracellular wood matrix. Laccase uses molecular oxygen as an electron acceptor to catalyze the degradation of organic compounds. Owing to its ability to transfer electrons from the cathodic electrode to molecular oxygen, laccase has the potential to be a biocatalyst on the surface of the cathodic electrode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, a two-chamber MFC using the laccase-producing fungus Galactomyces reessii was investigated. The fungus cultured on coconut coir was plac

Microbial community modulates electrochemical performance and denitrification rate in a biocathodic autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrifying microbial fuel cell.

A comparison of autotrophic (AD) and heterotrophic (HD) cathodic denitrification in a Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) was made in this study. Denitrifying microbial consortia were developed from cow manure and soil and acclimatized under AD and HD conditions. The AD MFC supported the power output of 4.45 W m-3 while removing nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) at the rate of 0.118 kg NO3--N m-3 d-1. Significant power output (3.02 W m-3) and nitrate removal rate (2.06 kg NO3--N m-3 d-1) were achieved in HD MFC. Further, 16S rDNA based community analysis revealed higher diversity in HDMFC. Ultrasonic irradiation to modify the functionalized bionanocomposite in sulfonated polybenzimidazole membrane for fuel cells applications and antibacterial activity.

In this article the new proton exchange membranes were prepared from sulfonated polybenzimidazole (s-PBI) and various amounts of sulfonated titania/cellulose nanohybrids (titania/cellulose-SO3H) via ultrasonic waves. The ultrasonic irradiation effectively changes the rheology and the glass transition temperature and the crystallinity of the composite polymer. Ultrasonic irradiation has a very strong mixing and dispersion effect, much stronger than conventional stirring, which can improve the dispersion of titania/cellulose-SO3H nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. The strong -SO3H/-SO3H intera

Pretreatment of Siam weed stem by several chemical methods for increasing the enzymatic digestibility.

Siam weed [Chromolaena odorata (L.) King & Robinson], an invasive exotic weed in China, was proposed as a feedstock for bioethanol production. This would be a promising way of using for an invasive weed that needs management and control. It was found that the glucan content of the weed stem was similar to that of sugarcane bagasse, but higher than those of corn stover and wheat straw. Several chemical pretreatment methods were applied to the weed stem to increase its enzymatic digestibility. Mild sulfuric acid (<120 degrees C) or alkali pretreatment did not markedly increase the enzymatic dige

A self-powered electrochemical aptasensor for the detection of 17β-estradiol based on carbon nanocages/gold nanoparticles and DNA bioconjugate mediated biofuel cells.

17β-Estradiol (E2) is an important endogenous estrogen, which disturbs the endocrine system and poses a threat to human health because of its accumulation in the human body. Herein, a biofuel cell (BFC)-based self-powered electrochemical aptasensor was developed for E2 detection. Porous carbon nanocage/gold nanoparticle composite modified indium tin oxide (CNC/AuNP/ITO) and glucose oxidase modified CNC/AuNP/ITO were used as the biocathode and bioanode of BFCs, respectively. Self-powered denitration of landfill leachate through ammonia/nitrate coupled redox fuel cell reactor.

In order to explore the feasibility of energy-free denitrifying N-rich wastewater, a self-powered device was uniquely assembled, in which ammonia/nitrate coupled redox fuel cell (CRFC) reactor was served as removing nitrogen and harvesting electric energy simultaneously. Ammonia is oxidized at anodic compartment and nitrate is reduced at cathodic compartment spontaneously by electrocatalysis. In 7.14 mM ammonia+0.2M KOH anolyte and 4.29 mM KNO3+0.1M H2SO4 catholyte, the nitrate removal efficiency was 46.9% after 18 h. Meanwhile, a maximum power density of 170 mW m(-2) was achieved when applyin

Air Ambient-Operated pNIPAM-Based Flexible Actuators Stimulated by Human Body Temperature and Sunlight.

Harnessing a natural power source such as the human body temperature or sunlight should realize ultimate low-power devices. In particular, macroscale and flexible actuators that do not require an artificial power source have tremendous potential. Here we propose and demonstrate electrically powerless polymer-based actuators operated at ambient conditions using a packaging technique in which the stimulating power source is produced by heat from the human body or sunlight. The actuating angle, force, and reliability are discussed as functions of temperature and exposure to sunlight. Furthermore,
