While it is well established that a biofilm contributes to the sinking of plastics, the underlying mechanisms of how it influences the vertical transport of plastics have not been well explained. In this context, our study dives into the intricate effects of biofouling on the settling velocity (Ws) of microplastics (MPs) within the fluid. We adopt the perspective that the biofilm is a form of surface roughness impacting the drag coefficient (Cd) and vertical settling of MPs. By advancing the biofouling process model, we simulate the temporal variations of density and biofilm thickness of biofo

Drug resistance by pathogenic microbes has emerged as a matter of great concern to mankind. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi employ multiple defense mechanisms against drugs and the host immune system. A major line of microbial defense is the biofilm, which comprises extracellular polymeric substances that are produced by the population of microorganisms. Around 80% of chronic bacterial infections are associated with biofilms. The presence of biofilms can increase the necessity of doses of certain antibiotics up to 1000-fold to combat infection. Thus, there is an urgent need for strat

Candida glabrata is one of the most prevalent pathogenic Candida species in dental plaque on tooth surfaces. Candida biofilms exhibit an enhanced resistance against most antifungal agents. Thus, the development of alternative more potent and effective antimicrobials is required to overcome this resistance. In this study, three novel fluorinated derivatives and nine selenoester compounds were screened as novel antifungal and antibiofilm agents against C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, and C. glabrata (N = 81 dental isolates). C. glabrata strains were susceptible only to fluorinated compounds while C.

The formation of biofilms by Salmonella is of considerable interest to the food production and medical industries. This study investigated the effects of a carrier medium (Luria-Bertani, Mueller-Hinton II, Brain Heart Infusion or chicken meat juice), temperature (14 °C, 23 °C or 37 °C) and surface type (adhesive, non-adhesive or suspension plate) on biofilm formation in 16 different Salmonella isolates belonging to the serovars S. Enteritidis (five isolates), S. Infantis (five isolates) and S. Typhimurium (six isolates). Chicken meat juice was found to have a moderate yet balanced supportive e

Streptococcus mutans is a key pathogen in dental caries and adheres to tooth surfaces via the surface protein SpaP, which binds salivary agglutinin (SAG). However, the extent to which adherence properties influence subsequent biofilm formation remains unclear. This study investigated biofilm formation of S. mutans strains with varying adherence properties on glass surfaces with or without a crude SAG (cSAG) coating prepared from human parotid saliva, under static or laminar flow conditions, and in mono- or multispecies conditions. Green-fluorescent protein-labeled S. mutans strains (V403, NG8,

Wounds are highly susceptible to bacterial biofilm infections, which are difficult to treat and can lead to significant patient morbidity. Microneedles offer a promising strategy for enhancing therapeutic delivery to biofilms, but their interaction on biofilm-affected skin remains poorly understood. In this study, we developed a Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm-skin composite model to evaluate time-dependent changes in the mechanical properties of ex vivo porcine skin. Flat punch indentation and single solid microneedle penetration studies were performed for skin exposed to P. aeruginosa over th

Endotracheal-tube-associated biofilm infections (ETTABIs) are directly responsible for most of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), one of the most frequent ICU-acquired infections with up to 13% mortality rates. Herein, we report a new type of biofilm penetrating and disrupting polymers that can be readily used to effectively treat the ETTABIs. A series of mixed-charge brush polymers with dextran main-chains and random copolypeptide side-chains (e.g., Dex-GnEm) were synthesized by a combination of ring-opening polymerization and side-chain or end-group modifications. Candida albicans is a commensal organism and opportunistic pathogen that can form biofilms that colonize surfaces of medical devices, such as implants, catheters, and dentures. Compared to planktonic C. albicans cells, cells in biofilms exhibit increased resistance to treatment. Histatin 5 (Hst-5) is an antimicrobial peptide that is natively secreted by human salivary glands and has strong antifungal activity against C. albicans. However, C. albicans produces secreted aspartic proteases (Saps) that can cleave and inactivate Hst-5, limiting its antifungal properties. We previously showed that r

Microorganisms grown in biofilms are more resistant to antimicrobial treatment and immune system attacks compared to their planktonic forms. In fact, infections caused by biofilm-forming Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are a large threat for public health, including patients with medical devices. The aim of the current manuscript was to test the effect of dalbavancin, a recently developed lipoglycopeptide antibiotic, alone or in combination with compounds contributing to bacterial cell disaggregation, on staphylococcal biofilm formation and elimination. We used real-time i

Epidemiological studies comparing clinical and commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates suggest that biofilm formation is a discriminant biomarker. A study showed that four non-biofilm-forming clinical S. epidermidis isolates could form an induced biofilm by trypsin treatment, suggesting that S. epidermidis can form biofilms in a protease-independent way and in a trypsin-induced way. In this study, the trypsin capacity to induce biofilm formation was evaluated in non-biofilm-forming S. epidermidis isolates (n = 133) in order to support this mechanism and to establish the importance of tot

Virulence enzymes and biofilm a play crucial role in the pathogenesis of Propionibacterium acnes, a major causative agent of acne vulgaris. In the present study, the effects of rhodomyrtone, a pure compound identified from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk. leaves extract against enzyme production and biofilm formation production by 5 clinical isolates and a reference strain were evaluated. The degree of hydrolysis by both lipase and protease enzymes significantly decreased upon treatment with the compound at 0.125-0.25 μg/mL (p < 0.05). Lipolytic zones significantly reduced in all isolates

The opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans forms biofilms with viscoelastic properties and rheological response to flow that can significantly impact its biology and life cycle. The rheological phenotypes of fungal biofilms, however, have been neither quantified extensively nor genetically dissected. We have developed methods to quantify the rheology of fungal biofilms, and, here, we analyzed a panel of C. albicans deletion mutants impaired in cell wall structure or extracellular matrix (ECM) production for rheological phenotypes. Increased elastic moduli, indicative of higher viscoela

Biofilms offer attractive opportunities for continuous biotechnological production processes; however, understanding biomass dynamics and electron fluxes within such communities remains a major challenge for process optimization and scale-up. In this study, a segmented-flow tubular capillary biofilm reactor was investigated using a dual-species consortium of Pseudomonas taiwanensis and Rhodopseudomonas palustris for nitrogenase-driven hydrogen production. Biofilm development and biomass dispersion were monitored using a newly established flow cytometry-based analysis pipeline capable of quanti

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) is a causative agent in the development of acne vulgaris, and this bacteria has been reported to show resistance against conventional antibiotics. One of the vital factors contributing to antibiotic resistance is the ability of C. acnes to form biofilms. Thus, the purpose of this review is to assess the efficacy of various recent developments and to identify acceptable methods for preventing infections associated with C. acnes biofilms.
METHODOLOGY: A variety of criteria considered in the selection process, such as the site of infection, the mechanis

Oral biofilms play a central role in oral and systemic diseases. Periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans have been detected on dentures and oral mucosa, suggesting denture wearers remain at risk. This study aimed to evaluate whether combined denture and soft tissue disinfection reduces microbial biofilm more effectively than denture cleaning alone. Sixty-one complete-denture wearers were randomly assigned to a test group (n = 31; denture disinfection plus soft tissue chlorhexidine treatment) or a control group (n = 30; denture disinfecti

OBJECTIVES: Arginine is a caries-preventive agent that modulates the microbial composition of dental biofilms and raises pH via bacterial ammonia production. The effect of arginine on biofilm pH has only been measured in bulk, and it is unknown how treatment affects microscale pH developments inside dental biofilms. Moreover, little is known about arginine's impact on the biofilm matrix. This study investigated the effects of arginine on biofilm pH, matrix architecture and microbial composition in a saliva-derived biofilm model.
METHODS: 72-h biofilms were grown with or without sucrose, and a

Salmonella enterica is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, responsible for an estimated 93.8 million cases and approximately 155,000 deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization. This foodborne pathogen imposes a significant burden on public health and the global economy. A key factor contributing to the persistence and widespread impact of S. enterica is its potential to form biofilms, which may enhance its survival in clinical, industrial, and agricultural environments, making it a major and ongoing public health concern. Biofilms are structured microbial communiti
