Fish see further than you might think.

Fleming and Michel argue that consciousness lags up to 450 ms behind the world. I argue that the "aquatic sensory volume" for objects ecologically relevant for fish lies outside this window. If "reality monitoring" is an important function of consciousness, it likely evolved well before the transition to land in the vertebrate lineage.

The secure attachment system is a paleo fantasy.

As Bard, Keller, and Leavens show, attachment theory does not account for the diversity of child-rearing practices around the world. However, the entrenched commitment to Bowlby's idea that the attachment system is a biological adaptation prevents attachment researchers from fully understanding the import of such diversity. I argue that this idea relies on a static and flawed view of evolution.

Evolutionary ecology: Islands within islands.

Deep sinkhole forests shelter rare trees from climate stress but strand them in severe isolation. A new study of a karst magnolia shows interior populations lose genetic diversity and accumulate harmful mutations, suggesting climate refuges may also become evolutionary traps.

Beyond the equation: An evolutionary reassessment of the love formula.

Kruglanski et al.'s love formula - partner merit, appreciation, and the quest for meaning - offers a novel perspective but overlooks key evolutionary insights. It oversimplifies mating preferences, neglects contextual flexibility, and downplays reproductive signals crucial to partner selection. While innovative, the model fails to account for the complexity of human romantic behavior shaped by ecological, social, and developmental factors.

The Eye-Closing Mechanism in Pufferfish has Evolved From Puffing-Related Musculature: Phylogenetic Evidence.

Eye closure is a fundamental protective mechanism for the vertebrate visual system, yet it is rare among fully aquatic vertebrates. Pufferfishes (Order Tetraodontiformes: Family Tetraodontidae) exhibit a unique form of eye closure, termed "iris-like eye closure," in which the cornea is covered by radially-directed movements of the surrounding skin rather than by eyelids. A previous study has documented this behavior and its associated musculature in a single species, but its phylogenetic distribution and evolutionary origin are unresolved. Dissection for comparison of 51 specimens representing

Crinoid biology and ecology.

Crinoids (Class Crinoidea) are the oldest extant echinoderm lineage and possess one of the most complete fossil records of any marine animal group, spanning almost half a billion years. Although they dominated many Paleozoic benthic ecosystems, only approximately 731 species survive today, occupying habitats from shallow reefs to the deepest ocean trenches. This chapter provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on crinoid biology and ecology, integrating evidence from modern and fossil taxa to examine the evolutionary processes that have shaped their remarkable persistence and di

The timescale of nematode evolution reveals late and convergent radiations of parasitism.

Nematodes are among the most diverse animal groups, exerting profound impacts as parasites with far-reaching medical and economic consequences. Despite parasitic species constituting most known extant nematodes, the temporal framework underpinning the evolution of parasitism has remained elusive. Here we integrate expansive genomic datasets (184 representatives, including 156 nematode species) with fossil constraints to recalibrate the timescale of nematode evolution and resolve the evolution of their parasitic and free-living lifestyles. Our analyses indicate that the last common ancestor of

An updated phylogeny of Boraginales based on the Angiosperms353 probe set: a roadmap for understanding morphological evolution.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Boraginales, a subcosmopolitan order with ~2700 species in currently 11 families, has seen fluctuating classification at the family and generic levels. Gynoecium and fruit morphology have been pivotal in morphological classifications, but a systematic evaluation based on anatomical and ontogenetic data has not been attempted. METHODS: We revisited the phylogenetic relationships in Boraginales by analysing 162 newly sequenced samples using the Angiosperms353 probe set, together with existing data from 88 samples. Our sampling covers >80 % of the genera and all currently an

Ontogeny of a Brazilian Late Triassic Traversodontid (Cynodontia, Cynognathia): Anatomical and Paleoecological Implications.

Investigating the developmental patterns of extinct species provides valuable insights into their anatomy, biology and ecomorphological adaptations. Research on the ontogeny of non-mammaliaform cynodonts has offered significant contributions to our understanding of these aspects. Here, we aim to describe and discuss the intraspecific and ontogenetic variation of the skull of the Brazilian traversodontid Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum (Candelária Sequence, Upper Triassic). We evaluated an ontogenetic series of the species through qualitative comparison and allometric analyses using cranial measures

Plant plastids: from evolutionary origins to functional specialization and organelle interactions.

Plastids are highly diverse organelles that play critical roles in supporting many forms of life on Earth. Among them, chloroplasts house the machinery for photosynthesis, providing phototrophic capabilities to eukaryotes such as plants, algae, and photosynthetic protists. The functions of plastids are indispensable for the survival and development of life, and they are widely recognized as endosymbiotic organelles with a single origin. They exhibit morphological diversity, tissue specificity, and the ability to adapt to specific cellular functions. Despite this level of understanding, signifi

The flexible, the stereotyped and the in-between: putting together the combinatory tool use origins hypothesis.

Tool use research has long made the distinction between tool using that is considered learned and flexible, and that which appears to be instinctive and stereotyped. However, animals with an inherited tool use specialisation can exhibit flexibility, while tool use that is spontaneously innovated can be limited in its expression and facilitated by predispositions for ecological specialisations. Furthermore, recent evidence does not support the proposed division of flexible tool use along primate-bird taxonomic lines. Instead, we hypothesise that tool use is a more complementary phenomenon than

A fossilized ventral ganglion reveals a chaetognath affinity for Cambrian nectocaridids.

Nectocaridids are enigmatic Palaeozoic animals with a controversial phylogenetic position. Previous hypotheses have placed them in their own phylum, chordates, molluscs (specifically cephalopods), or radiodont panarthropods. We describe here a nectocaridid, Nektognathus evasmithae gen. et sp. nov. from the early Cambrian (~519 million years) Sirius Passet Lagerstätte of North Greenland. Key specimens preserve paired, phosphatized arcuate structures consistent with preservation of a ventral ganglion, a feature characteristic of extant and fossil chaetognaths, including the amiskwiid Timorebesti

Divergent origin of the insect cephalic endoskeleton and the trachea from a homologous metameric structure.

During animal evolution, organs adapt to perform new functions. In some cases, adaptive changes over large evolutionary distances can lead to divergence that obscures the organs' origin, as is observed in the highly specialized structures formed in the cephalic region. The genetic and cellular analysis of how metamerically repeated organs develop in segmented animals can help us understand the formation of such extremely divergent homologous organs. In this work, we use Drosophila melanogaster to study the origin of the tentorium, the conserved cephalic endoskeleton of insects. We find that th

Look past the cooperative eye hypothesis: reconsidering the evolution of human eye appearance.

The external appearance of the human eye has been prominently linked to the evolution of complex sociocognitive functions in our species. The cooperative eye hypothesis (CEH) proposes that human eyeballs, with their weakly expressed conjunctival and scleral pigmentation, are uniquely conspicuous and evolved under selective pressures to behave cooperatively, therefore signalling attentiveness to conspecifics. Non-human primates are instead assumed to display less-salient eye morphologies that help mask their gaze to facilitate competitive, rather than cooperative actions. Here, we argue that th

The wide gape of snakes: A comparison of the developing mandibular symphysis in sauropsids.

The origin and evolution of snakes has been marked by the acquisition of many morphological and functional novelties, one of which is the possession of a highly kinetic skull allowing for the consumption of prey that are often larger than their head diameter. One feature of the iconic wide gape of macrostomate (large-mouthed) snakes is due to changes in the rostral midline where the left and right hemi-mandible come together. Across vertebrates, the two sides of the lower jaw are held together by the mandibular symphysis. In snakes, the two halves of the lower jaw do not fuse and the symphysis

Loss of the ability to regenerate body appendages in vertebrates: from side effects of evolutionary innovations to gene loss.

The ability to regenerate large body appendages is an ancestral trait of vertebrates, which varies across different animal groups. While anamniotes (fish and amphibians) commonly possess this ability, it is notably restricted in amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals). In this review, we explore the factors contributing to the loss of regenerative capabilities in amniotes. First, we analyse the potential negative impacts on appendage regeneration caused by four evolutionary innovations: advanced immunity, skin keratinization, whole-body endothermy, and increased body size. These innovations em

What is a trait? Lessons from the human chin.

The chin, a distinguishing feature of Homo sapiens, has sparked ongoing debates regarding its evolutionary origins and adaptive significance. We contend that these controversies stem from a fundamental disagreement about what constitutes a well-defined biological trait, a problem that has received insufficient attention despite its recognized importance in biology. In this paper, we leverage paleoanthropological research on the human chin to investigate the general issue of character or trait identification. First, we examine four accounts of the human chin from the existing literature: the ma

The last ceratosaur of Asia: a new noasaurid from the Early Cretaceous Great Siberian Refugium.

The noasaurid ceratosaur Kiyacursor longipes gen. et sp. nov. is described based on a fragmentary skeleton including cervical vertebra, pectoral girdle, humerus and hind limbs from the Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) Ilek Formation at Shestakovo 1 locality in Western Siberia, Russia. This is the first ceratosaur from the Early Cretaceous of Asia, extending the stratigraphic range of Ceratosauria by 40 Myr on that continent. Kiyacursor shares unique hind limb proportions with Elaphrosaurus and Limusaurus, suggesting improved cursorial ability. These taxa show an ostrich-like specialization of the pes

Does death drive the scaling of life?

The magnitude of many kinds of biological structures and processes scale with organismal size, often in regular ways that can be described by power functions. Traditionally, many of these "biological scaling" relationships have been explained based on internal geometric, physical, and energetic constraints according to universal natural laws, such as the "surface law" and "3/4-power law". However, during the last three decades it has become increasingly apparent that biological scaling relationships vary greatly in response to various external (environmental) factors. In this review, I propose

Summary Tests of Introgression Are Highly Sensitive to Rate Variation Across Lineages.

The evolutionary implications and frequency of hybridization and introgression are increasingly being recognized across the tree of life. To detect hybridization from multi-locus and genome-wide sequence data, a popular class of methods are based on summary statistics from subsets of 3 or 4 taxa. However, these methods often carry the assumption of a constant substitution rate across lineages and genes, which is commonly violated in many groups. In this work, we quantify the effects of rate variation on the D test (also known as ABBA-BABA test), the D3 test, and HyDe. All 3 tests are used wide
