Mechanical positional information guides the self-organized development of a polygonal network of creases in the skin of mammalian noses.

The glabrous skin of the rhinarium (naked nose) of many mammalian species exhibits a polygonal pattern of grooves that retain physiological fluid, thereby keeping their nose wet and, among other effects, facilitating the collection of chemosensory molecules. Here, we perform volumetric imaging of whole-mount rhinaria from sequences of embryonic and juvenile cows, dogs, and ferrets. We demonstrate that rhinarial polygonal domains are not placode-derived skin appendages but arise through a self-organized mechanical process consisting of the constrained growth and buckling of the epidermal basal

Influence of different calibration methods on surface electromyography-informed musculoskeletal models with few input signals.

BACKGROUND: Although model personalization is critical when assessing individuals with morphological or neurological abnormalities, or even non-disabled subjects, its translation into routine clinical settings is hampered by the cumbersomeness of experimental data acquisition and lack of resources, which are linked to high costs and long processing pipelines. Quantifying the impact of neglecting subject-specific information in simulations that aim to estimate muscle forces with surface electromyography informed modeling approaches, can address their potential in relevant clinical questions. Estimation of the body center of mass velocity during gait of people with transfemoral amputation from force plate data integration.

BACKGROUND: Body Center Of Mass velocity assessment is a prerequisite for several applications in prosthetic control and rehabilitation monitoring. Force plate data integration is a promising alternative to full-body quantitative analysis of segmental kinematics to estimate the velocity. Still, it remains to be implemented and validated for people with transfemoral amputation. METHODS: Two methods were used (force plate based and pelvic markers based) for Body Center Of Mass velocity estimation in a clinical context. The two methods were comparatively assessed on overground walking data of ei

Biomechanical comparison of the use of different surgical suture techniques for continuous loop tendon grafts preparation.

We introduce a new approach for a continuous loop tendon-graft preparation, benchmarking it against established graft preparation techniques widely used in conjunction with non-adjustable interference screw fixation. A four-strand bovine tendon graft was prepared using the following graft preparation techniques: standard graft using the baseball stitch technique (M-tech group); continuous loop graft using the GraftLinkTM technique (Arthrex-tech group); continuous loop graft using the Kessler anastomosis technique (Kessler-tech group); and continuous loop graft using a Double-Z anastomosis tech

Large medial proximal tibial angles cause excessively medial tibiofemoral contact forces and abnormal knee kinematics following open-wedge high tibial osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent varus deformity and poor outcome sometimes occur following open-wedge high tibial osteotomy, but the mechanism remains unclear. The hypothesis of this study was that an excessively large medial proximal tibial angle with lateral joint surface inclination can worsen postoperative knee biomechanics. METHODS: A computer-simulated knee model was validated based on a volunteer knee. Osteotomy models with medial proximal tibial angles ranging from 90° to 97° in 1° increments were developed. Varus alignment correction of the distal femur was performed in each model to maintain

The biomechanics of concussive helmet-to-ground impacts in the National Football league.

This paper presents a detailed characterization of helmet-to-ground impacts in the National Football League. Video analysis was performed for 16 head-to-ground impacts that caused concussions. Average resultant closing velocity was 8.3 m/s at an angle nearly 45° to the surface. Preimpact rotational velocity of the helmet ranged from negligible to as high as 54.1 rad/s. Helmet impacts were concentrated on the posterior and lateral aspects. To study the interaction in greater detail, a helmeted anthropomorphic test device (ATD) was launched over a football field and fell to the ground in various

The association between mechanical and biochemical/histological characteristics in diabetic and non-diabetic plantar soft tissue.

Diabetes, and the subsequent complication of lower limb ulcers leading to potential amputation, remains an important health care problem in United States, even with declining amputation rates. It has been well documented that diabetes can alter the mechanical properties (i.e., increased stiffness) of the plantar soft tissue, although this finding is not universal. Similarly, biochemical, and histological changes have been found in the plantar soft tissue, but, as with the mechanical changes, these findings are not consistent across all studies. Our group׳s work has demonstrated that diabetes i

The influence of a polymer damper on swing-through crutch gait biomechanics.

Forearm crutch technology has evolved slowly compared to other assistive mobility devices, despite the highly repetitive nature of forearm crutch gait and the high incidence of overuse injuries. Using 13 able-bodied volunteers between the ages of 19 and 27, we compared the ground reaction forces of a novel crutch design featuring an elastomeric polymer situated below the handle to an identical design without a damper system and to a commercially available generic rigid forearm crutch model. There were no differences in peak vertical force or impulse between crutches. The crutch with the damper

Development of skull fracture criterion based on real-world head trauma simulations using finite element head model.

The objective of this study was to enhance an existing finite element (FE) head model with composite modeling and a new constitutive law for the skull. The response of the state-of-the-art FE head model was validated in the time domain using data from 15 temporo-parietal impact experiments, conducted with postmortem human surrogates. The new model predicted skull fractures observed in these tests. Further, 70 well-documented head trauma cases were reconstructed. The 15 experiments and 70 real-world head trauma cases were combined to derive skull fracture injury risk curves. The skull internal

Control of cardiac alternans by mechanical and electrical feedback.

A persistent alternation in the cardiac action potential duration has been linked to the onset of ventricular arrhythmia, which may lead to sudden cardiac death. A coupling between these cardiac alternans and the intracellular calcium dynamics has also been identified in previous studies. In this paper, the system of PDEs describing the small amplitude of alternans and the alternation of peak intracellular Ca(2+) are stabilized by optimal boundary and spatially distributed actuation. A simulation study demonstrating the successful annihilation of both alternans on a one-dimensional cable of ca

Mechanical properties of the upper airway.

The importance of the upper airway (nose, pharynx, and larynx) in health and in the pathogenesis of sleep apnea, asthma, and other airway diseases, discussed elsewhere in the Comprehensive Physiology series, prompts this review of the biomechanical properties and functional aspects of the upper airway. There is a literature based on anatomic or structural descriptions in static circumstances, albeit studied in limited numbers of individuals in both health and disease. As for dynamic features, the literature is limited to studies of pressure and flow through all or parts of the upper airway and

Nanomechanical properties of single amyloid fibrils.

Amyloid fibrils are traditionally associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. However, the ability to form amyloid fibrils appears to be a more generic property of proteins. While disease-related, or pathological, amyloid fibrils are relevant for understanding the pathology and course of the disease, functional amyloids are involved, for example, in the exceptionally strong adhesive properties of natural adhesives. Amyloid fibrils are thus becoming increasingly interesting as versatile nanobiomaterials for applications

In vivo biomechanics of the fingerpad skin under local tangential traction.

Small patches of fingerpad glabrous skin in human subjects were tested in vivo for their biomechanical properties under tangential loading and for large deformations. These conditions included stretching and shearing the skin at a length scale of 0.3mm using an apparatus comprising a pair of piezoelectric benders arranged to increase the stiffness/free deflection tradeoff when compared to ordinary cantilevered benders. It was then possible to test the skin with up to 80% of tangential strain. With feedback control, it was also possible to create isotonic and isometric testing conditions. The r

Biomechanical analyses point to dense collagen fibre architecture in an Ediacaran frond.

Ediacaran macrofossils record the earliest large and complex organisms on Earth. Despite extensive study, fundamental aspects of their internal anatomy and tissue composition remain poorly known, limiting understanding of how these organisms were constructed and functioned, as well as how their complex anatomies evolved. Here, we establish a new quantitative biomechanical framework to infer tissue properties in the Ediacaran frond Charniodiscus. Analyses of fossil morphology, numerical simulations and dimensional analysis indicate that the commonly preserved twisted forms reflect three-dimensi

The effects of actual and simulated visual impairments on the walking gait: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairments (VI) affect over 2.2 billion people worldwide and are linked to an increased risk of falls. To date, no reviews have systematically synthesised evidence for the effect of VI on whole body gait biomechanics, to better understand how different types of VI might affect gait. METHODS: A systematic search up to July 2025 was conducted using PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC. Eligible studies included adults, a diagnosed or simulated VI, a non-visually impaired comparator, and reported any of the following gait parameters: 1) Spatio-temporal; 2) Kinet

Optimizing gait template generation from variable-length data: a dynamic dimension warping approach.

The analysis of human movement data in sports science is often challenged by the inherent variability in movement speed and rhythm, which results in gait time-series data of inconsistent lengths (dynamic dimensionality). This poses a significant obstacle for traditional optimization algorithms in constructing accurate motion templates for performance analysis and rehabilitation. To address this, we propose a novel Dynamic Dimension Warping (DDW) algorithm specifically designed for efficient search in dynamic multidimensional spaces. DDW integrates a Cross-Dimensional Mapping (CDM) mechanism, f

Spatiotemporal tongue kinematics from ultrasound imaging: Articulatory divergence in Mandarin apical vowels.

Mandarin apical vowels [ɹ'] and [ɻ'] have resisted articulatory classification: are they vocalized prolongations of the preceding sibilant or independent vowel targets? Using ultrasound imaging and generalized additive mixed models with simultaneous confidence intervals, the tongue contour over space and time in two comparisons has been modeled: each vowel against its sibilant onset and the three vocalic realizations against one another. [ɻ'] continues the /ʂ/ posture while [ɹ'] diverges from /s/, and the three realizations differ from one another, the two apical vowels from [i] and from each

Biomechanical Problems Related to Lesser Toes Dysfunction and Amputation.

Should we care about the biomechanics of the foot or the full locomotor system? Anatomic changes are the main concerns of an orthopedic surgeon; however, the main objectives of treatment for lesser toe dysfunctions are to relieve the patient's symptoms to preserve or improve function. It is imperative to understand that the foot is part a three-dimensional biokinetic system that needs to function combined so that loads are harmoniously distributed throughout the body without harmful effects, especially for one of the most frequent voluntary neuromotor tasks in humans: walking.

Kinematics of different vault techniques in elite male gymnasts.

Vaulting requires the transformation of horizontal momentum into vertical displacement and angular momentum through the run-up, springboard contact, table support, second flight, and landing phases. This study aimed to compare key kinematic parameters among different vault technique types in elite male gymnasts and to explore phase-specific kinematic factors associated with landing angle. Landing angle was defined as a kinematic descriptor of body posture at initial mat contact, not as a direct measure of landing quality, landing stability, or E-score. Kinematic data from 16 vault trials perfo
