The Biosafety Research Road Map: The Search for Evidence to Support Practices in Human and Veterinary Laboratories.

INTRODUCTION: Lack of evidence-based information regarding potential biological risks can result in inappropriate or excessive biosafety and biosecurity risk-reduction strategies. This can cause unnecessary damage and loss to the physical facilities, physical and psychological well-being of laboratory staff, and community trust. A technical working group from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE), World Health Organization (WHO), and Chatham House collaborated on the Biosafety Research Roadmap (BRM) project. The goal of the BRM is the sustainable implementation of evide

Resilience of Belgian Cattle Farmers Towards Infectious Diseases Outbreaks.

The study addresses the growing risk of infectious disease outbreaks in livestock by developing and applying a composite resilience index to evaluate the adaptive capacity of Belgian cattle farmers in implementing biosecurity measures (BSMs). The framework integrates three core dimensions, that is, implementation, feasibility and effectiveness, across three priority diseases representing distinct epidemiological profiles and transmission routes like brucellosis, bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The analysis combines three data sources as follows: (i) a farm-level

Control and eradication of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus type 2 using a modified-live type 2 vaccine in combination with a load, close, homogenise model: an area elimination study.

BACKGROUND: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causes significant animal and economic losses worldwide. The infection is difficult to control and PRRSV elimination at local level requires coordinated intervention among multiple farms. This case study describes a successful elimination of PRRSV from all 12 herds on the Horne Peninsula, Denmark, using a combination of load, close, homogenise (LCH) using PRRSV type 2 modified-live vaccine, optimised pig flow, and'10 Golden Rules' (10GR) for biosecurity management. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first successful Eu

A risk-based framework to guide oversight of nucleic acid constructs.

Existing nucleic acid synthesis screening guidance refers broadly to nucleic acids and their constructs, leaving providers and policymakers uncertain which products warrant biosecurity oversight. This uncertainty can lead to gaps in protection if risky products are ungoverned, and unnecessary burdens on legitimate biological research if products that pose negligible risk are governed. This Perspective article presents a risk-informed framework for classifying synthetic nucleic acid products based on their biosecurity relevance to inform proportionate screening guidance. Drawing on input from s

Intestinal helminths in farmed pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus): Hematological and histopathological effects.

Biosecurity in aquaculture is essential to reduce disease burden and ensure sustainability. Piaractus mesopotamicus (pacu) is a key species in South American aquaculture, yet parasitic threats to its health remain understudied. We analyzed intestinal helminth and assessed their effects on the health of 34 farmed pacu reared in intensive and semi-intensive systems in Santa Fe, Argentina, using parasitological, hematological, and histopathological approaches. Three parasite taxa were identified: the digenean Dadaytrema oxycephala (∼65 % prevalence; mean abundance: ∼3 parasites/fish), the nematod

Evidence for interspecies transmission route of pseudorabies virus via virally contaminated fomites.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a zoonotic agent with a wide host range, causing significant economic losses in animal husbandry and potential public health risk globally. The causative agent has recently gained attention due to the inter-species transmission among different species of animals, even human beings. Although PRV's prevalence is found in many species of animals, regardless of whether the strain involved is a vaccine, classical or variant, few lines of evidence for the viral transmission route are available. Here, we reported that viral contamination is associated with the inter-specie

Molecular recognition of axonal injury-associated candidate hub genes and predicted inhibitors across Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Limpopo is a very important area for pig production in terms of animal populations and contributions to transboundary animal disease spread. Emerging small-scale pig farmers (ESSPF) are being encouraged to establish operations and spread in South Africa; however, for these farmers to perform optimally, they need to understand the basics of animal agriculture and contribute to enhancing biosecurity and efficient production systems. In the present study, the limitations to efficient production amongst ESSPF were evaluated and some improvements were suggested. It was found that the ESSPF are domi

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Salmonella isolated from poultry farms in southeastern United States.

Salmonella spp. are among the most common foodborne pathogens, and increase in the occurrence of antimicrobial drug-resistant Salmonella poses a severe risk to public health. The main objective of this study was to determine changes in Salmonella prevalence and their antimicrobial resistance on poultry farms following recommendations to changes in biosecurity practices. Four poultry farms were sampled by collecting cloacal swabs, drag swabs, and litter samples prior to recommended biosecurity changes (March-April) and post recommendations (October-November). Prevalence of Salmonella was 3 to 4

Epidemiological insights of lumpy skin disease and farmer's adaptive responses in India.

This study documented critical field epidemiological parameters of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and farmer-adopted mitigation strategies, utilizing primary data collected from 2,351 cattle farms across seven states in India. Reported clinical LSD incidence was 76–94% in the surveyed villages and 30–57% in the surveyed farms across the study states. LSD incidence was observed round the year but the peak incidence period varied across the states. The pooled reported clinical incidence and farmer-reported mortality levels across the study states was 23.4% and 4.0% and 22.3% and 5.5%, in crossbred and

Risk factors associated with introduction of wild-type porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus into growing pigs in the Midwestern U.S.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infections in growing pigs are common and costly. We evaluated risk factors related to production practices and herd characteristics associated to wild-type PRRSV (WT-PRRSV) introduction into 63 wean-to-finish (WTF) herds through the implementation of surveys, active recording of activities and monthly oral fluid sampling during the growing phase. Herds were located in the Midwest region of the USA and observed prospectively. Logistic regression analysis of risk factors indicated that WTF herds that outsourced trucks for mortality rem

Defect-engineered BiVO4 nanozyme sensor array for discriminative detection of anthrax biomarker and its analogues.

Detecting dipicolinic acid (DPA), a critical anthrax biomarker, is essential for biosecurity, but faces interference from structurally similar pyridinecarboxylic acids (PAs) using simple techniques. To address this, a colorimetric sensor array based on cation vacancy-engineered bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) nanozymes was developed. Three types of BiVO4 nanozymes (r-, m-, and p-BiVO4) with tunable peroxidase-like activity were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. These nanozymes exhibited differential inhibitory responses toward various PAs, attributed to specific metal-coordination interac

Can we effectively manage parasites, prions, and pathogens in the global feed industry to achieve One Health?

Prions and certain endoparasites, bacteria, and viruses are internationally recognized as types of disease-causing biological agents that can be transmitted from contaminated feed to animals. Historically, foodborne biological hazards such as prions (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy), endoparasites (Trichinella spiralis, Toxoplasma gondii), and pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli O157, Clostridium spp., and Campylobacter spp.) were major food safety concerns from feeding uncooked or improperly heated animal-derived food waste and by-products. Identification and molecular characterization of H9N2 viruses carrying multiple mammalian adaptation markers in resident birds in central-western wetlands in India.

We report here a targeted risk-based study to investigate the presence of influenza A viruses at the migratory-wild-domestic bird interface across the major wetlands of central India's Maharashtra state during the winter migration season. The H9N2 viruses have been isolated and confirmed in 3.86% (33/854) of the fecal samples of resident birds. To investigate the genetic pools of H9N2 circulating in resident birds, we sequenced two isolates of H9N2 from distant wetlands. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses have shown that these viruses are triple reassortants, with HA, NA, NP, and M genes belon
