The protein complex of developing tooth enamel is a unique product of biological synthesis in vertebrates, and its role in enamel mineralization is unknown. Using simple methods, molecular aggregates and polycrystalline deposits from purified extracts of the total protein complex and a 21-20 kDa component were discovered and compared with sectioned material. A model of generalized optical anisotropy of polycrystalline networks of albumin and globulin of the effusion of appendicitis has been suggested. The method of Fourier phasometry of linear and circular birefringence with a spatial-frequency selection of the coordinate distributions for the differentiation of acute and gangrenous conditions have been analytically substantiated. A set of criteria of a polarization-phase differentiation of acute and gangrenous appendicitis states has been detected and substantiated.

Amyloid is usually deposited in the tongue, as a part of generalized amyloidosis. Isolated localized amyloidosis of the tongue is relatively rare. We report such a case which presented with glossodynia and glossopyrosis and was thought clinically to represent median rhomboid glossitis. Histologically the amyloid stained positively with Congo-red giving green birefringence under polarized light, was not abolished after permanganate pretreatment and did not react immunohistochemically for amyloid A, beta 2 microglobulin and transthyretin.

The Mueller matrix has the capability of providing the complete polarisation information about the response of a medium to the incident polarised light. In this work, we report that the anisotropic structures of non-stained melanoma slices can be identified directly through the Mueller elements. Liesegang rings are concentric noncellular lamellar structures, occasionally found in inflammatory tissues. They have been confused with various parasites, algas, calcification, and psammoma bodies. The authors examined Liesegang rings from oral inflammatory cysts by both optical and confocal laser scanning microscopy, and perfomed a three-dimensional reconstruction. These investigations indicate that Liesegang rings are composed of multiple birefringent concentric rings, resulting from a progressive deposition of organic substances, with an unclear pathogenesis.

Bile peritonitis (BP) is a rare and serious condition warranting urgent surgical intervention to prevent the high incidence of mortality. BP is ascribed to the leakage of bile into the peritoneal cavity usually due to a perforation of the gallbladder or common bile duct caused by stones or a trauma. The radiological studies are useful in suggesting the diagnosis. BACKGROUND: High mammographic density is a therapeutically modifiable risk factor for breast cancer. Although mammographic density is correlated with the relative abundance of collagen-rich fibroglandular tissue, the causative mechanisms, associated structural remodelling and mechanical consequences remain poorly defined. In this study we have developed a new collaborative bedside-to-bench workflow to determine the relationship between mammographic density, collagen abundance and alignment, tissue stiffness and the expression of extracellular matrix organising proteins.

Synthetic fiber granulomas, also known as "Teddy Bear" granulomas or "Fuzz Ball granulomas," are usually seen in childhood. We present a case of a 5-year-old child with a "Fuzz Ball" granuloma of the conjunctiva. The resected specimen was processed routinely. The use of polarized light during microscopic examination of the resected tissue made the diagnosis evident due to the prominent birefringence of the synthetic foreign material fibers.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify component volumes (mineral, organic, total water, firmly and loosely bound water volumes, and permeability) at histological points in bovine enamel and investigate their association with bovine enamel's optical behavior and fracture toughness (FT).

Crystals suitable for X-ray structure analysis were obtained for CaM complexed with both calcium ions and a phenothiazine drug, trifluoperazine (TFP). The TFP/CaM binding ratio in crystals was experimentally determined to be nearly 1. A new inorganic-organic hybrid zinc borate was prepared under hydrothermal conditions. This compound is the first KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) derivative with zinc borate layers linked by mononegatively charged amino acids. Notably, it exhibits a relatively large second-harmonic-generation response of about 2.0 times that of KBBF and a moderate birefringence for phase matching in the UV region. The enhanced interlayer interaction was evaluated by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory.

We describe the case of a 37-year-old caucasian man with a history of keratoconus and long-term hard contact lens wear. Histological analysis of the corneal button after penetrating keratoplasty revealed staining with Congo red and apple green birefringence detected using polarized light. In the absence of other systemic or ocular pathology, the authors infer this amyloid deposition to be secondary to keratoconus and endeavor to discuss the possible etiopathogenesis of the disease.

We report the case of a 36-year-old man with a recent diagnosis of gout, who presents with a fullness behind his right knee that fluctuates in size with time. An ultrasound revealed a Baker cyst that contained both large and punctate internal hyperechoic foci. Cyst aspiration revealed negatively birefringent crystals, which were consistent with gout.

Tissue sections from injection marks from 30 drug addicts and sections from endocrine organs and kidneys from an additional 33 addicts were studied together with endocrine organs and kidneys from 20 'normal' persons. All 83 persons were submitted for medico-legal autopsy at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen.
