Condom use in anal intercourse amongst people who identify as homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual.

AIMS: to study condom use amongst those who practice anal intercourse. METHODS: a sample of 814 clients attending anonymously for pretest counselling for HIV infection at the Burnett Clinic, Auckland, gave detailed information about their sexual behaviour. RESULTS: insertive or receptive anal intercourse was reported in 39% of clients. This included 89% among homosexual men, 78% among bisexual men, 17% among heterosexual men and 21% among heterosexual women. In those practising anal intercourse concomitant condom use was reported by 71% of homosexual men, 53% of bisexual men, 16% of heterose

The geographic and ethnic diversity of AIDS incidence trends in homosexual/bisexual men in the United States.

We examined geographic and racial/ethnic variation in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) incidence in homosexual and bisexual men (i.e., men who report sex with men: MSWM) not using i.v. drugs in the United States. The AIDS incidence in these men has continued to increase in the United States. Incidence increased much less rapidly after 1986 in the three metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with the most cases, New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and may have reached a plateau in these areas. This change in incidence occurred in non-Hispanic black and Hispanic MSWM as well

Characterizing lesbian, gay, and bisexual patients' experiences with elder abuse: A chart review study.

OBJECTIVES: Older adults who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) may be at increased risk of elder abuse (EA) due to unique risk factors; however, research in healthcare settings has been limited by the lack of data on sexual orientation. Since 2022, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has collected self-reported sexual orientation for all patients. The objective of this chart review study was to use newly available electronic health record (EHR) data to explore the documented experiences of older LGB adults identified with EA concerns. METHODS: We randomly sampled 100 of 201 Vet

Preventing sexually transmitted infections in gay and bisexual men who have sex with men.

Gay and bisexual men who have sex with men (GBMSM) experience unique health challenges, including higher rates of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) compared with the general population. This article offers an overview of the treatment and preventive interventions used in sexual health and genitourinary medicine clinics to improve sexual health and reduce the risk of acquiring STIs, focusing on the sexual health of GBMSM. Preventive medicine is a proactive approach to reducing the risk of ill health by using medicines, vaccination and lifestyle

Fraternal Birth Order Effect and Other Sibship Effects in Bisexual and Asexual Men and Women.

Previous research has shown that homosexual men and women tend to have more older brothers than their heterosexual counterparts-this is known as the fraternal birth order effect (FBOE) and is usually considered a marker for biological development of sexual orientation. Recent studies suggest this effect might also apply to bisexual and asexual individuals who have been overlooked by previous scholarship. In this study, I explored associations of the FBOE and other sibship effects with minority sexual orientation in an online collected sample of heterosexual (n = 1174), bisexual (n = 432), and

Self-harm and suicide attempts among incarcerated lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by minority stress theory, we explored the association between sexual identity, justice system involvement, self-harm and suicide attempts, among a cohort of incarcerated adults in Australia. METHODS: A sample of 2698 adults incarcerated in Queensland and Western Australia were surveyed between 1 August 2008 and 12 August 2016 about their current psychological distress, mental health diagnoses, contact with mental health services, and lifetime and recent self-harm and suicide attempts. We used multivariable logistic regression to explore the relationship between sexual orie

The Natural History of Anal High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions in Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are disproportionately affected by anal cancer. Prevention is hindered by incomplete understanding of the natural history of its precursor, anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). METHODS: The Study of the Prevention of Anal Cancer, conducted between 2010 and 2018, enrolled human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive and HIV-negative GBM aged ≥35 years. Anal cytology and high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) were performed at baseline and 3 annual visits. A composite HSIL diagnosis (cytology ± histology) was used. Cytological high-grade squamou

Risk factors associated with alcohol and drug use among bisexual women: A literature review.

Bisexual women report elevated alcohol and drug use compared to other sexual minority women. This review summarized extant research on mechanisms (i.e., coping processes with minority stress and victimization, disclosure of sexual identity, connectedness to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ +) community, religiosity, and normative perceptions) that may influence alcohol and other drug use among bisexual women. Specifically, bisexual women experience unique sexual discrimination (i.e., binegativity) and are at heightened risk for other forms of victimization and

Lesbian, gay and bisexual homelessness in Australia: Risk and resilience factors to consider in policy and practice.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people are more likely than heterosexual people to experience homelessness. The study aimed to compare risk and resilience factors commonly associated with homelessness according to sexual identity to inform more LGB-inclusive and targeted policy and service provision in this area. The study involved analysis of data from two Australian surveys: the General Social Survey 2014 (n = 17,401) and the Journeys Home study (n = 1,659). Chi-squared analyses of the survey data compared LGB with heterosexual respondents. Bisexual respondents had a significantly earlier av

Substance Use and School Characteristics in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Heterosexual High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) high school students as well as related environment and school-level risk and protective factors were examined. METHODS: Data was acquired from the 2015 CDC's Youth Behavior Risk Survey for Kentucky (N = 2577). Prevalence of substance use was calculated for all high school respondents by reported sexual orientation. Multivariate analyses estimated the relationship between school and environmental-level factors (eg, having an adult to talk to) and tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use via logistic regres

Harmless? A hierarchical analysis of poppers use correlates among young gay and bisexual men.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Poppers (alkyl nitrites) are recreational substances commonly used during sexual activity. The current legal status of poppers is complex and wide-ranging bans are increasingly under discussion. Research has identified disproportionate levels of poppers use in sexual minority men. While research on poppers use among sexual minority men exists, little is known about poppers use patterns and correlations with psychosocial and other factors among gay and bisexual young men. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 836 Australian gay and bisexual youn

Dermatologic care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons: Epidemiology, screening, and disease prevention.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons face important health issues relevant to dermatologists. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at higher risk of certain infectious diseases, including HIV, syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, and invasive meningococcal disease, and might be at higher risk of non-infectious conditions, including skin cancer. Recommendations for preventive health care, including screening for HIV and other STDs, sexual health-related vaccinations, and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, di

Examining the Sexual Health Consequences of Alcohol Consumption Among Black Gay and Bisexual Men.

BACKGROUND: Black men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV infection. Efforts are needed to understand correlates of HIV risk among this group. Alcohol consumption may have a role in HIV transmission given its association with condomless sex. This study aimed to examine the association between alcohol consumption (i.e., drinking before/during sex and levels of alcohol use problems) and condom use during lifetime, past 6 months, and the event (i.e., a specific sexual episode) level. METHODS: Black MSM (N = 102) reported sexual behavior and condom use for lifetime,

Substance Use Among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Questioning Adolescents in the United States, 2015.

OBJECTIVES: To provide current national estimates of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) adolescents' (grades 9-12) substance use risks. METHODS: The 2015 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey included questions for 19 substance use outcomes covering 15 substances. LGBQ adolescents' substance use was described and their risk relative to heterosexual adolescents was estimated after controlling for sociodemographic confounders. RESULTS: In controlled analyses, we found that LGBQ adolescents were 1.12 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06, 1.19) times as likely as heterosexual adolescen

Health Inequities among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults in North Carolina, 2011-2014.

Inequalities in health have been identified for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations nationally. Policies in the U.S. South offer fewer protections for LGB people than in other regions, yet, limited data exist for this region. North Carolina (NC) BRFSS data from 2011 to 2014 were combined (LGB n = 604; heterosexual n = 33,170) and analyzed using SAS survey procedures to estimate health characteristics by sexual orientation within gender. Many examined indicators were not different by sexual orientation, however, other results were significant and consistent with findings from state pop

Occurrence and impact of domestic violence and abuse in gay and bisexual men: A cross sectional survey.

This cross-sectional survey measured adult experience and perpetration of negative and potentially abusive behaviours with partners and its associations with mental and sexual health problems, drug and alcohol abuse in gay and bisexual men attending a UK sexual health service. Of 532 men, 33.9% (95% CI: 29.4-37.9) experienced and 16.3% (95% CI: 13.0-19.8) reported carrying out negative behaviour. Ever being frightened of a partner (aOR 2.5; 95% CI: 2.0-3.1) and having to ask a partner's permission (aOR 2.7; 95% CI: 1.6-4.7) were associated with increased odds of being anxious. Understanding the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans Australians living with dementia, and their partners.

AIM: To outline the experiences and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) Australians living with dementia - and their partners. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with LGBT people, their partners and service providers. RESULTS: LGBT people living with dementia experience unique challenges including the failure of some families of origin and service providers to understand and value their sexual orientation or gender identity. The fear of discrimination by service providers results in greater reliance on intimate partners for care and compounds social isolation. CONCLUSI
