The Impact of Bisphenol A on Fertility, Reproductive System, and Development: A Review of the Literature.

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been used since the 1950s, in food packaging, industrial materials, dental sealants, and personal hygiene products. Everyone is exposed to BPA through skin, inhalation, and digestive system. BPA disrupts endocrine pathways, because it has weak estrogenic, antiandrogenic, and antithyroid activities. Despite the rapid metabolism, BPA can accumulate in different tissues. Many researchers proved the impact of BPA on human development, metabolism, and finally reproductive system. There is increasing evidence that BPA has impact on human fertility and is responsible for the rep

Evidence for Bisphenol B Endocrine Properties: Scientific and Regulatory Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The substitution of bisphenol A (BPA) by bisphenol B (BPB), a very close structural analog, stresses the need to assess its potential endocrine properties. OBJECTIVE: This analysis aimed to investigate whether BPB has endocrine disruptive properties in humans and in wildlife as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) definition used in the regulatory field, that is, a) adverse effects, b) endocrine activity, and c) plausible mechanistic links between the observed endocrine activity and adverse effects. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review to identify BPB adverse effec

Histological investigations on thymus of male rats prenatally exposed to bisphenol A.

Bisphenol A is called as a endocrine-distrupting chemical because of the its steroid-like activity and it used in the construction of plastic containing materials. It is indicated that bisphenol A can pass the human serum, urine, follicular fluid, placenta and umblical cord as a result of the use of substances containing this agent. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of bisphenol A on the development of the thymus, a primary lymphoid organ which plays an important role in the specific immunity. The adult pregnant female rats were administered orally with bisphenol A (for 21 day

Alterations in porcine intrahepatic sympathetic nerves after bisphenol A administration.

INTRODUCTION: Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the chemical industry for manufacturing plastics which are used as food packaging. Data indicate that BPA is released from such products and is widely present in the environment and the human body. So far, the EFSA and the US FDA have determined "safe" BPA oral exposure levels, and a large amount of data indicates that BPA is harmful even at low-doses. Our previously performed analyses concerning BPA exposure demonstrated the impact of this substance on parasympathetic and peptidergic nerve fibers present within the liver. Therefore, this study concer

Transgenerational inheritance of heart disorders caused by paternal bisphenol A exposure.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor used in manufacturing of plastic devices, resulting in an ubiquitous presence in the environment linked to human infertility, obesity or cardiovascular diseases. Both transcriptome and epigenome modifications lie behind these disorders that might be inherited transgenerationally when affecting germline. To assess potential effects of paternal exposure on offspring development, adult zebrafish males were exposed to BPA during spermatogenesis and mated with non-treated females. Results showed an increase in the rate of heart failures of progeny up to t

Screening occupational contact allergy to bisphenol F epoxy resin.

BACKGROUND: Epoxy resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) are widely used as such in applications requiring chemical resistance, and also together with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A resin (DGEBA-R). Concomitant patch test reactions to DGEBA-R and DGEBF resin (DGEBF-R) are common. Previous studies have yielded conflicting results on the frequency of independent DGEBF-R contact allergies. OBJECTIVES: To report the results of over 11 years of screening with DGEBF-R. METHODS: An in-house test substance of DGEBF-R (Epikote 862) was tested in the baseline patch test series, first

Bisphenol A exposure and cardiac electrical conduction in excised rat hearts.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that are widely used in everyday products, such as food and beverage containers, toys, and medical devices. Human biomonitoring studies have suggested that a large proportion of the population may be exposed to BPA. Recent epidemiological studies have reported correlations between increased urinary BPA concentrations and cardiovascular disease, yet the direct effects of BPA on the heart are unknown. OBJECTIVES: The goal of our study was to measure the effect of BPA (0.1-100 μM) on cardiac impulse propagat

Molecularly imprinted microspheres for bisphenol a prepared using a microfluidic device.

Spherical molecularly imprinted polymer particles for bisphenol A (BPA-MIP) were easily prepared by using a Y-junction microfluidic device. The sizes of the obtained BPA-MIP particles were found to be 86 µm with a narrow size distribution. The binding characteristics were investigated by drawing a binding isotherm to estimate the binding constant and by switching the polarity of solvents to examine the feasibility of use as a medium for affinity chromatography. When dichloromethane was used as a solvent, BPA was strongly bound to the spherical BPA-MIP particles based on hydrogen bond formation

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an ubiquitous chemical contaminant that has recently been associated with adverse effects on human health. There is incomplete understanding of BPA toxicokinetics, and there are no established interventions to eliminate this compound from the human body. Using 20 study participants, this study was designed to assess the relative concentration of BPA in three body fluids-blood, urine, and sweat-and to determine whether induced sweating may be a therapeutic intervention with potential to facilitate elimination of this compound. METHODS: Blood, urine, and sweat w

Bisphenol-A (BPA) affects reproductive formation across generations in mice.

To understand effects of Bisphenol-A (BPA) exposure on the reproductive organ across generations, we analyzed morphology of the uterus and ovary, and the methylation pattern of HOXA10 gene of the 2(nd) generation. Pregnant mice (F0) were treated with sc injection of BPA in sesame oil at various doses of 0-1,000 mg/kg Bwt on days 12-16 of gestation. Their offspring (F1) were bred by foster mice, and the offspring (F2) from F1 mice were prepared. That is, F1 mice experienced in utero BPA exposure during the developmental period of reproductive organs, while F2 mice did not at all. Using these F2

Iron deficiency augments bisphenol A-induced oxidative stress in rats.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an estrogenic environmental contaminant is also known for oxidative stress-inducing effect. Malnutrition is recognized as a confounding factor in oxidative stress. However, little is known about effect of malnutrition on oxidative stress induced by BPA or other endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). We studied effect of malnutrition (iron deficiency) in rats chronically exposed to low levels of BPA taking into consideration the oxidative stress and antioxidant status in liver, kidney and gonads. Iron deficiency significantly elevated level of lipid peroxidation in BPA-expose

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis to bisphenol F epoxy resin.

A 30-year-old man presented with eyelid dermatitis and was diagnosed with occupational allergic contact dermatitis to an epoxy resin based on the monomer diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F. He did not react to the standard epoxy resin based on bisphenol A, but reacted to a diluted sample of epoxy resin taken from his workplace, an adhesives manufacturing plant. The diagnosis would not have been made had he not brought samples from work, which were patch tested after appropriate dilution. The material safety data sheet provided additional evidence that the epoxy was not based on bisphenol A. The p

Mechanisms of reproductive toxicity and endocrine disruption of bisphenols and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): Implications for women's reproductive health.

Bisphenols and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals with widespread human exposure and growing concern regarding their reproductive toxicity. This review integrates current experimental and epidemiologic evidence to evaluate the potential endocrine-disrupting mechanisms and reproductive toxicity of bisphenols, particularly bisphenol A (BPA), and PFAS on female reproductive health. Available data demonstrate that these chemicals disrupt key hormonal and cellular processes regulating female reproduction, including hypothalamic-pit

Toxicity of low dose bisphenols in human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and human cardiac organoids - Impact on contractile function and hypertrophy.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs are common environmental chemicals with various adverse health impacts, including cardiac toxicity. In this study, we examined the long term effect of low dose BPA and three common BPA analogs, bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF), in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) based models. HiPSC-CMs and human cardiac organoids were exposed to these chemicals for 4-5 or 20 days. 1 nM BPA, BPS, and BPAF, but not BPF, resulted in suppressed myocyte contractility, retarded contraction kinetics, and aberrant Ca2

Relationship between endocrine disrupting chemicals (phthalate metabolites, triclosan and bisphenols) and vitamin D in female subjects: An exploratory pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), commonly used in plastics and personal care products, may be associated with reduced levels of vitamin D. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between phthalate metabolites, 5-chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol (triclosan; TCS) and bisphenols (BPs) with vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) and active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), and their relationship to calcium homeostasis. METHODS: 57 female participants (age 31.8 ± 4.6 years; BMI 25.6 ± 3.7 kg/m2) were analyzed for urinary levels of phthalate metabolites,

Bisphenol S toxicity in zebrafish: Endocrine, neurobehavioural, and metabolic disruptions.

Bisphenol S (BPS), increasingly used as a substitute for Bisphenol A, has raised toxicological concern due to its environmental persistence and widespread exposure. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) provides a valuable model for assessing BPS toxicity because of conserved endocrine and neural pathways, rapid development, and well-established behavioural assays. This review synthesizes current evidence on the effects of BPS exposure in zebrafish. Available studies indicate that BPS is associated with alterations in multiple endocrine axes, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal, thyroid, and interr
