Many animal models of alcohol dependence utilize forced alcohol exposure, including chronic intermittent exposure to alcohol vapor, to induce high blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) and withdrawal-associated behaviors similar to those seen in clinical contexts. Chronic alcohol exposure and withdrawal are especially important in influencing the expression of negative symptoms (e.g., negative affect and pain), which, in turn, increase alcohol consumption. However, cessation of chronic alcohol vapor exposure does not always lead to those "canonical" withdrawal behaviors in rodents. Environmental

This manuscript presents an epidemiological investigation carried out on abuse victims who accessed the Sexual and Domestic Violence Service (SVS&D) of IRCCS Ca' Granda in Milan, Italy. The focal point of this research was the detection of alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit substances in victims who solicited help from the SVS&D center between 2018 and 2020. Over this three-year span, biological samples of blood and urine were procured from 207 victims, out of a patient pool of 2470. All collected samples were analyzed via High Performance Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectr

Since the accuracy of headspace gas chromatographic analysis of blood for ethanol concentration has been so well established over the past several decades, it has become commonplace in court proceedings to attack preanalytical handling of the blood samples including the lack of measuring sample temperature prior to sample preparation. The impact on measured ethanol concentration of allowing refrigerated (~4℃) samples varying amounts of time to equilibrate with room temperature, 24, 4, 3, 2, and 1 h, prior to sample preparation was evaluated. Samples were diluted 1:10 with an internal standard

BACKGROUND: On May 14, 2013, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) proposed that states lower the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) illegal limit from 0.08 to 0.05 g/dL (also referred to as the 0.08 law and the 0.05 limit, respectively). In March 2017, this recommendation was signed into law in the State of Utah.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this survey is to investigate perceptions regarding enforcement of the 0.05 g/dL BAC limit.
METHOD: Opinions of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and defense attorneys were obtained through a series of questionnaires and focus groups.

OBJECTIVE: Most data regarding high blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) ≥400 mg/dL have been from alcohol poisoning deaths. Few studies have described this group and reported their alcohol consumption patterns or outcomes compared to other trauma patients. We hypothesised trauma patients with very high BACs arrived to the trauma centre with less severe injuries than their sober counterparts.
METHOD: Historical cohort of 46,222 patients admitted to a major trauma centre between January 1, 2002 and October 31, 2011. BAC was categorised into ordinal groups by 100 mg/dL intervals. Alcohol question

To assess whether the wines from the south of Sevilla constitute a source of lead intoxication we have prospectively studied the blood levels of lead in 100 healthy controls, 100 patients with alcoholic and nonalcoholic hepatopathy and at the same time the lead content in 135 samples of water and in 176 samples of alcoholic drinks consumed by the above patients. The results demonstrate: 1) presence of normal amounts of lead (mean +/- SD = 62 +/- 5 micrograms/l) in 97 of wines analyzed; 2) a higher content of lead in wines from areas close to the highway A-4 (100 +/- 10 micrograms/l) than in th

In 34 patients with polyaddiction, 30 with hashishaddiction and 10 opiateaddiction and in 6 patients with chronic alcoholism the author studies the content of serum immunoglobulins of class A. M. G. The studies established that the content of IgA is increased in patients with polyaddiction, chronic alcoholism. An increase of IgA in the blood serum is marked in hashishaddiction, opiateaddiction and chronic alcoholism and its increase in opiateaddiction and polyaddiction. The character of changed serum IgM depends upon the type of addiction: it is increased in opiateaddiction, decreased in hashi

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Alcohol-induced memory loss (also known as "blackout") is prevalent and confers risk for other adverse drinking outcomes. Sleep health is implicated in memory and cognitive functioning broadly, but proximal impacts of sleep on next-day memory loss are understudied. We hypothesized that worse sleep health the night before drinking (fewer hours, misaligned timing, worse sleep quality, greater sleepiness) would (a) increase the odds of next-day memory loss and (b) moderate day-level associations between estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC) and blackouts, such that lower

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is a well-documented risk factor for motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) and may also heighten post-trauma psychological symptoms. Given the frequent co-occurrence of MVC injury, alcohol use, and post-injury mental health sequelae, coordinated post-injury care is critical to support long-term psychological and physical recovery. The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma requires screening for and intervention on risky alcohol use and, more recently, to conduct mental health risk screening and referral. However, little is known about how established alcohol screening

BACKGROUND: Annually since 2008; over 38% of fatally injured motorcycle riders and 20% of pedalcyclists involved in traffic crashes were under the influence of alcohol, yet public health surveillance of alcohol involvement in these injuries is underdeveloped. This study determined alcohol involvement among fatally and non-fatally injured pedalcycle and motorcycle riders and compared findings across three national public-use datasets.
METHODS: Using the 2019 National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS), the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), and National Electronic I

INTRODUCTION: Non-ischaemic heart disease (NIHD) is the underlying pathology in∼20% of all sudden cardiac deaths (SCDs). Heavy drinking is known to be associated with SCD due to ischaemic heart disease, but studies on association of recent alcohol consumption and SCD in patients with NIHD are scarce. We evaluated the blood alcohol levels of autopsy verified non-ischaemic SCD victims.

OBJECTIVE: Visuospatial awareness is critical for everyday activities like driving. Higher order processes, such as visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and top-down modulation of gaze control, enable goal-driven visual scanning. Although available evidence suggests that alcohol differentially affects VSWM during the ascending and descending phases of the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) curve, it remains unclear whether such impact extends to a systemic disruption of visual scanning behavior.
METHOD: In a placebo-controlled and repeated-measures design, the present study investigated the infl

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Validity of self-reported alcohol consumption is a topic of continued interest with mixed findings. Validity of self-reports prior to injury is analysed among emergency department (ED) patients by cause of injury, blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and societal context.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Data are on 16 196 injured patients from 23 countries in the International Collaborative Alcohol and Injury Project. The proportion of those reporting drinking within 6 h prior to injury among the 2658 BAC positive patients was analysed by injury cause (traffic, violence, falls, other)

Medical problems related to illicit drug use are frequently encountered at electronic dance music (EDM) events. In this prospective study, the medical problems and toxicological analyses on intoxicated persons and seized materials are described jointly. The aim of this study is to find out to what extent these efforts may assist in developing prevention strategies and organising on-site care at EDM events. The most frequently encountered clinical presentation in the 121 included patients was: agitation/aggression (26%), drunkenness (25%), depressed level of consciousness (24%) and hallucinatio

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol-impaired driving presents a continued risk for traffic safety and results in a significant proportion of fatalities on the roadway. We examined how alcohol at a 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) compares to 0.10% BAC (above the current U.S. legal limit) in terms of impact on driving performance.
METHODS: Utilizing a within-subjects design, we recruited 108 healthy experienced drivers who were moderate to heavy drinkers. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, we administered placebo and alcohol at the 0.05% and 0.10% BAC levels in a standardized simula

Serious alcohol-associated hazards underscore the need to develop new biomarkers reflecting the biological changes caused by chronic alcohol use and predicting the risk of alcohol-related death. Oxidative stress is one mechanism of alcohol toxicity. The blood and urine redox status (total antioxidant capacity [TAC], total oxidative status [TOS], and oxidative stress index [OSI]) was assessed in 105 people who died a sudden death (controls), 47 people who died of alcohol overdose, and 102 people with alcohol dependency. TAC and TOS were determined utilizing the colorimetric method. Non-parametr

The concentrations of copper and zinc in the tissues of alcohol-addicted people can significantly correlate with the variables describing their mental state. Studies on the homeostasis of zinc in alcohol-dependent patients have often been characterized by low hypozincemia detection. This may be caused by a low content of zinc in blood serum (1%) compared to the average zinc level in the body. Unfortunately, most authors have identified extracellular zinc in their studies. In the available literature, data on the level of copper in patients suffering from alcohol dependence are inconsistent. Ou
