Emotion recognition in generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, skin picking disorder, trichotillomania, and posttraumatic stress disorder: a systematic review.

This systematic review evaluates patterns of emotion recognition in anxiety, obsessive-compulsive and related, and trauma- and stressor- related disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, skin picking disorder, trichotillomania, and posttraumatic stress disorder). A comprehensive literature search identified 15 studies. Emotion recognition patterns were reviewed for each disorder. After considering strengths and weaknesses of individual studies and the literature as a whole, trends across disorders support a decreased recognition of sadness and an anger

Exercise addiction and disordered eating in young Lebanese regular sport practitioners: the indirect role of body appreciation and body dysmorphic concerns.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating, encompassing behaviors like restrictive dieting, binge eating, and purging, is a prevalent issue with significant psychological and physical consequences. Among athletes, it is often exacerbated by sociocultural pressures and performance demands, making it a critical area of study. Exercise addiction is characterized by compulsive exercise behaviors and is frequently associated with disordered eating; however, the underlying mechanisms of this relationship remain unclear. Limited research has explored the factors that may contribute to the risk of both exercise a

Brain activation and connectivity in anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder when viewing bodies: relationships to clinical symptoms and perception of appearance.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) are characterized by distorted perception of appearance, yet no studies have directly compared the neurobiology associated with body perception. We compared AN and BDD in brain activation and connectivity in relevant networks when viewing images of others' bodies and tested their relationships with clinical symptoms and subjective appearance evaluations. We acquired fMRI data from 64 unmedicated females (20 weight-restored AN, 23 BDD, 21 controls) during a matching task using unaltered or spatial-frequency filtered photos of others' bodi

Maladaptive self-focused attention and default mode network connectivity: a transdiagnostic investigation across social anxiety and body dysmorphic disorders.

Maladaptive self-focused attention (SFA) is a bias toward internal thoughts, feelings and physical states. Despite its role as a core maintaining factor of symptoms in cognitive theories of social anxiety and body dysmorphic disorders (BDDs), studies have not examined its neural basis. In this study, we hypothesized that maladaptive SFA would be associated with hyperconnectivity in the default mode network (DMN) in self-focused patients with these disorders. Thirty patients with primary social anxiety disorder or primary BDD and 28 healthy individuals were eligible and scanned. Eligibility was

Low-Burden Detection of Clinical Worsening in Body Dysmorphic Disorder Using Smartphone Sensor and Demographic Data.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by distressing preoccupations with perceived appearance flaws, leading to functional impairment and suicidal ideation (SI). Traditional approaches for monitoring clinical deterioration in BDD include self-reports and clinician assessments, which can miss acute changes in risk due to infrequent administration and recall biases. Alternatively, real-time monitoring via smartphones and wearable devices can enable low-burden early detection of deterioration, identifying intervention opportunities before someone's condition critically worsens. Predictors and moderators of symptom change during cognitive-behavioral therapy or supportive psychotherapy for body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research on predictors of treatment outcome in body dysmorphic disorder, a common and severe disorder, is very limited, and no prior studies have examined moderators of outcome. Because treatment is often but not always efficacious, it is important to identify who is more likely to benefit. We examined predictors and moderators of improvement with therapist-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy versus supportive psychotherapy in the only study of these treatments for body dysmorphic disorder. This report presents secondary analyses from a study whose primary findings have previous

An Evaluation of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptom Scale as a Measure of Treatment Response and Remission in Psychotherapy and Medication Trials.

The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptom Scale (BDD-SS) is a self-report tool that captures an array of representative behavioral and cognitive symptoms commonly displayed by individuals with BDD. The BDD-SS is regularly used among experts in the field, though its utility as a measure of treatment response has not yet been formally evaluated. Results from two clinical trials of BDD treatment were pooled from an archived database to create a sample of 220 BDD participants who received either psychosocial or medication-based interventions for BDD. We used baseline BDD-SS scores to describe psychomet

Aberrant early visual neural activity and brain-behavior relationships in anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) share the clinical symptom of disturbed body image, which may be a function of perceptual distortions. Previous studies suggest visual or visuospatial processing abnormalities may be contributory, but have been unable to discern whether these occur early or late in the visual processing stream. We used electroencephalography (EEG) and visual event related potentials (ERP) to investigate early perceptual neural activity associated with processing visual stimuli. METHODS: We performed EEG on 20 AN, 20 BDD, 20 healthy controls,

Sexual attraction and the link between self-objectification and body dysmorphic disorder: A community-based adolescent study.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterised by a preoccupation with perceived appearance flaws accompanied by repetitive behaviours or mental acts. The onset of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) typically occurs in adolescence and is associated with high levels of distress and poor quality of life. Sexual minority groups have been identified as at particular risk of developing BDD, though community-based adolescent research remains limited. This study aimed to examine probable BDD (PBDD) prevalence across sexual attraction groups and explore its impact on distress and quality of life. The stu

Body dysmorphic disorder symptom severity and intimate partner violence: the role of PTSD and DSO symptom domains.

Background: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is common among survivors of interpersonal trauma. However, the relationship between BDD symptoms and intimate partner violence (IPV), as well as the roles of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom domains and disturbances in self-organization (DSO) symptom domains, remain unclear. Objective: This longitudinal study, which included three waves of data collection (T1, T2, T3), examined: (1) BDD symptom severity as a concomitant of IPV; (2) associations between PTSD and DSO symptom domains and BDD symptom severity in IPV survivors; and (3) the medi

Effects of Pharmacological and Psychological Treatments on Depressive Symptoms in Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of pharmacological and psychological treatments on depressive symptoms in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The primary objective was to assess treatment-related changes in depressive symptom severity among patients with BDD, while evidence regarding dysmorphic symptoms and combined interventions was reviewed narratively and should be interpreted with caution. RECENT FINDINGS: Across 46 studies (N = 2,227), evidence suggests antidepressants-especially SSRIs-substantially reduce depressive symptoms

Exploring Potential Pathways Linking Childhood Maltreatment and Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study.

While previous studies have highlighted a link between childhood maltreatment and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), the psychological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear-especially during adolescence. This cross-sectional study investigated cognitive, emotional, and behavioral mechanisms associated with BDD in adolescents with a history of childhood maltreatment. Participants included three groups: adolescents with BDD (n = 61), psychiatric controls (n = 68), and healthy controls (n = 70). All participants completed standardized clinical interviews, self-report questionnaires,

A concealed history behind the disaster: Extremely rare presentations of metformin toxicity in a patient with body dysmorphic disorder.

Metformin is a widely used anti-hyperglycemic agent with weight loss effect properties but besides its various utilities, despite being very rare, it has its characteristic toxicity and adverse effects when used in large doses and for the long-term or in patients with renal impairment. We presented here a case of a 36-year-old woman who developed several presentations with diverse features during three years comprising neuropathic symptoms, severe lactic acidosis, three episodes of cardiogenic shock, acute kidney injury, megaloblastic anemia, pancytopenia, and hyponatremia and did not receive

Persian Validation and Cultural Adaptation of the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire-Aesthetic Surgery for Iranian Rhinoplasty Patients.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is one of the obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) which is very common in populations. However, the diagnosis rate is lower than the reality. BDD may lead to loneliness, jobless, avoidance of daily life and public activities. The Body Dysmorphic Disorder Questionnaire-Aesthetic Surgery (BDDQ-AS) is the validated questionnaire used to screen the BBD in patients seeking cosmetic surgeries. This study aimed to translate and validate a Persian version of the BDDQ-AS. METHODS: This analytical-descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Firoozgar H

Empirically Defining Treatment Response and Remission in Body Dysmorphic Disorder Using a Short Self-Report Instrument.

Determining response or remission status in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) usually requires a lengthy interview with a trained clinician. This study sought to establish empirically derived cutoffs to define treatment response and remission in BDD using a brief self-report instrument, the Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI). Results from three clinical trials of BDD were pooled to create a sample of 123 individuals who had received cognitive-behavioral therapy for BDD, delivered via the Internet. The AAI was compared to gold-standard criteria for response and remission in BDD, based on the clini

Accept, distract, or reframe? An exploratory experimental comparison of strategies for coping with intrusive body image thoughts in anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder.

Negative body image is the hallmark of anorexia nervosa (AN) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). One aspect of body image, appearance-related thoughts, have shown to be a major contributor to relapse, thus further investigation of successful treatment strategies targeting these maladaptive thoughts are warranted. The present study tested an acceptance/mindfulness (AC), a cognitive restructuring (CR), and a distraction strategy with regard to their short-term effectiveness of reducing the frequency of thought occurrence and associated outcomes in participants with AN (n=20), BDD (n=21), and hea
