BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies traversing the aerodigestive tract lining into the surrounding soft tissues is a well-known entity. A 14-year-old girl was referred to our hospital after swallowing a pin that was not visualized by laryngoscopy, despite a neck film that localized it to the level of the larynx.

Two cases of sarcoidal-type allergic contact granuloma due to metals in ear piercing are presented, the first to palladium (Pd) only, and the second to Pd and possibly also to other metals. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine oral piercings among first-year university students.
STUDY DESIGN: First-year university students in 2002 were invited to a dental examination (n = 234; 49 men and 185 women). Students with piercings formed the study group and the rest served as controls. The methods included decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMF) index, stimulated salivary flow rates, panoramic tomograms, and questionnaires including the Depression Inventory of Beck. PURPOSE: To report a case of iatrogenic vitrectomy trochar-induced cyclodialysis cleft successfully treated with intraoperative argon endolaser.
OBSERVATIONS: A 68-year-old Caucasian male with a history of high myopia underwent pars plana vitrectomy to clear symptomatic vitreous opacities but developed early postoperative hypotony that was recalcitrant to medical management for the first 6 postoperative months. Intraoperative gonioscopy demonstrated a cyclodialysis cleft and argon endolaser was applied to close the cleft.

An experimental infection was induced in lambs with 1000, 4000, 7000, and 30000 T. ovis eggs. It was found for the first time that Cysticercus ovis could be established not only in the already known regions of the body, but also in the skin and the subcutaneous connective tissue. The lesions were followed up in the skin on the 10th, 20th, 30th, and 45th day following infection. Later on the cysticerci localized in the skin caused its total piercing. The skin portions above the cysticerci, localized in the subcutaneous tissue, proved unsuitable to treatment and handling and remained defective.

OBJECTIVES: Tolerance induction to prevent development of nickel allergy has been suggested with permanent dental braces. We wanted to find out which effect orthodontic treatments had had on the development of nickel allergy in university students.
STUDY DESIGN: We examined and patch tested 153 students, of whom 113 had a history of pierced skin, and 70 a history of orthodontic treatment roughly 10 years earlier.
