The diagnosis of human hydatidosis by measurement of specific IgE antibody by enzyme immunoassay.

The sensitivity and specificity of an enzyme immunosorbent assay (EIA) for measurement of anti-Echinococcus granulosus specific IgE antibody using microtiter strips was evaluated. The sensitivity was 92.2% for 90 patients with cysts in the liver or other body sites but excluding the patients with cysts in the lungs or bones. In this latter group (n = 26) a sensitivity of 61.5% was recorded. The specificity for control groups comprising 89 blood bank sera from Spain and 48 sera from atopic Swedes was 100%. Patients infected with other parasites (n = 78) were usually negative (81%). 11 of the 15

Osteochondral allograft transplantation in cartilage repair: Graft storage paradigm, translational models, and clinical applications.

The treatment of articular cartilage injury and disease has become an increasingly relevant part of orthopaedic care. Articular cartilage transplantation, in the form of osteochondral allografting, is one of the most established techniques for restoration of articular cartilage. Our research efforts over the last two decades have supported the transformation of this procedure from experimental "niche" status to a cornerstone of orthopaedic practice. In this Kappa Delta paper, we describe our translational and clinical science contributions to this transformation: (1) to enhance the ability of

Functional melanocytes derived from human pluripotent stem cells engraft into pluristratified epidermis.

Melanocytes are essential for skin homeostasis and protection, and their defects in humans lead to a wide array of diseases that are potentially extremely severe. To date, the analysis of molecular mechanisms and the function of human melanocytes have been limited because of the difficulties in accessing large numbers of cells with the specific phenotypes. This issue can now be addressed via a differentiation protocol that allows melanocytes to be obtained from pluripotent stem cell lines, either induced or of embryonic origin, based on the use of moderate concentrations of a single cytokine,

Cumulative Incidence and Risk Factors for Secondary Alloplastic Cranioplasty: A Time-to-Event Analysis.

Although complications of autologous bone flap cranioplasty are well described, data on long-term bone flap survival and the comorbidities associated with secondary reconstruction are limited. This study aimed to quantify the need for secondary alloplastic cranioplasty within a standardized patient cohort. Patients who underwent delayed cranioplasty following craniectomy with banked, frozen autologous bone between 2012 and 2025 were identified and analyzed using Cox regression, spline analysis, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. A total of 367 patients with an average age of 39.2±19.7 years (

What personal factors are associated with osteoporosis, fragility fracture, and osteopenia? A population-level analysis using the United Kingdom Biobank.

PURPOSE: Osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fragility fractures pose a major public health concern. Population-level clinical and biopsychosocial data may uncover modifiable risk factors to target when developing whole person approaches to managing these conditions. The purpose of this study was to identify personal risk factors associated with osteoporosis, fragility fractures, and osteopenia from the United Kingdom Biobank (UKB) - a large population-level database. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study using the UKB to evaluate the association between 39 systematically selected explanato

An Analysis of Bone Donor Deferral Rates in Scotland - a 6-Year Study.

BACKGROUND: The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is the main provider of tissues in Scotland. Tissue collection programmes were established in the mid-1990s, and the range of tissues collected has increased progressively over the years. MATHODS: Whilst the majority of tissues are obtained from cadaveric donations, bone is collected only from living donors who are usually patients undergoing primary hip replacement surgery (surgical donors). The bone is collected in an operating theatre, and, once stored, no further processing takes place prior to issue. Bone that fails for a

Description of a new Pimelodella (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) species with a discussion on the upper pectoral girdle homology of Siluriformes.

A new species of Pimelodella is described from several right-bank tributaries of the Rio Madeira basin in Amazonas and Rondônia states, Brazil. The new species differs from all congeners by the supraoccipital process not reaching the anterior nuchal plate, 43-45 total vertebrae, maxillary barbels reaching between adpressed anal-fin terminus and caudal-fin origin, epiphyseal branch of supraorbital laterosensory canal emerging as two distantly-positioned pores and a conspicuous black mark at distal third of dorsal fin, between dorsal-fin spine and third branched ray. A detailed description of th

Runaway resorption of microcracks contributes to age-related hip-fracture patients.

Microdefects, including microcracks and resorption trenches, may be important contributors to bone fragility. 3D microdefect morphology was imaged using synchrotron micro-CT to develop a classification system for investigating the relationship with bone mechanics and hip-fractures. Femoral heads from ageing hip-fracture patients (n = 5, 74-82 years) were compared to ageing non-fracture controls (n = 5, 72-84 years). Two trabecular cores were prepared from the chiasma; one was imaged using synchrotron micro-CT to measure microdefects and one was mechanically tested to measure tensile strength.

Computed tomography with low-dose radiation versus standard-dose radiation for diagnosing fractures: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BackgroundComputed tomography (CT) accounts for 13% of all radiological examinations in the United States and 40-70% of the radiation that patients receive. Even with the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT continues to be the gold standard for diagnosing bone fractures. There is uncertainty as to whether CT with a low radiation dose has a fracture detection rate similar to that of standard-dose CT.ObjectiveTo determine the detection rate of low-dose radiation CT and standard-dose radiation CT for fractures, in patients with suspected fractures.Design and settingSystematic review of

Use of structural allograft to compensate for bone loss in arthrodesis of the foot and ankle.

Allografts have several important advantages over other forms of bone graft augmentation. In addition to preventing the morbidity of autogenous bone graft harvesting, the quantity of allograft bone is essentially unlimited and is therefore valuable for use in treating very large defects that exceed the yield of the iliac crest. Allografts are particularly helpful in obese patients or patients with systemic disease because the they has the potential to reduce blood loss and anesthesia time. Regional anesthesia with either an ankle or a spinal block may be safer for the rheumatoid patient with c

The surgical treatment of instability of the upper part of the cervical spine in children and adolescents.

In a retrospective review of the cases of thirteen skeletally immature children and adolescents (four to eighteen years old) with instability of the upper part of the cervical spine (occiput to fifth cervical vertebra), we determined the efficacy of posterior arthrodesis and halo-cast immobilization in the management of this condition. The patients were divided into two groups: those with congenital vertebral anomalies alone (fusion or structural defects, or both) and those with cervical anomalies and systemic disorders (dwarfism, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Down syndrome, and cerebral pals

Sponge swabs increase sensitivity of sterility testing of processed bone and tendon allografts.

Sterility testing is the final, and critical, step in quality control of tissue banking. It informs the decision whether to release the tissue allografts for clinical use, or not. The most common method for sterility testing of structural bone and tendon allografts is to swab using cotton tip streaks. This method provides low recovery efficiency; and therefore may pass allografts with low bioburden, providing false negatives. Our pilot data revealed organism recovery efficiencies of 60, 30 and 100% from cotton swab, membrane filtration and sponge swaps, respectively. Our aim was to develop a h

[Lower limb salvage with a free fillet fibula flap harvested from the contralateral amputated leg].

We report a unusual case of "fillet flap" to reconstruct the lower limb with the amputated contralateral leg. This kind of procedure was first described by Foucher et al. in 1980 for traumatic hand surgery as the "bank finger". A 34-year-old man suffered a microlight accident with bilateral open legs fractures. A large skin defect of the left leg exposed the ankle, the calcaneus and a non-vascularized part of the tibial nerve (10 cm). The patient came to the OR for surgical debridement and had massive bone resection of the left calcaneus. The right leg showed limited skin defect at the lower p

Stem cell transplantation for treatment of sickle cell disease: bone marrow versus cord blood transplants.

PURPOSE: The transplantation of stem cells harvested from bone marrow and cord blood for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD) is reviewed. SUMMARY: Current treatment options have lengthened the lifespan of patients with SCD. Hydroxyurea is the standard of care for the management of SCD, but it does not prevent serious complications in all patients. For those patients with severe disease, stem cell transplantation may be an appropriate curative option. However, less than one third of these patients find an appropriate matched related bone marrow donor. Cord blood offers a more readily av

Morphometry of the human cochlear wall and implications for cochlear surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To study the lateral wall of the cochlea in human temporal bones (TBs), in order to evaluate the feasibility of performing micro-dissection of the spiral ligament and an endosteal electrode implantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We reviewed the database of the TB bank of The House Ear Institute in search of bones that did not distort the otic capsule or spiral ligament, and selected 36 horizontally sectioned TBs. All bones had been removed using the en bloc technique, fixed in formalin, decalcified in EDTA, embedded in celloidin and cut into 20-pm serial sections. We evaluated section

Prevalence of histologic otosclerosis: an unbiased temporal bone study in Caucasians.

BACKGROUND: 'Histologic otosclerosis' refers to a disease process without clinical symptoms or manifestations that can only be discovered by sectioning of the temporal bone at autopsy. 'Clinical otosclerosis' concerns the presence of otosclerosis at a site where it causes conductive hearing loss by interfering with the motion of the stapes or of the round window membrane. Various authors have studied the prevalence of histologic otosclerosis on laboratory collections of temporal bones. Some 12-15% of the temporal bones with histologic otosclerosis have demonstrated stapedial fixation. Using th

Production of an osteoinductive demineralised bone matrix powder without the use of organic solvents.

Demineralised bone matrix (DBM) is produced by grinding cortical bone into a powder, sieving the powder to obtain a desired size range and then demineralising the powder using acid. Protocols for the production of DBM powder have been published since 1965 and the powder can be used in lyophilised form or it can be mixed with a carrier to produce a paste or putty. The powder is generally produced from cortical bone which has been processed to remove blood, bone marrow and bone marrow components, including fat. Removal of fat is accomplished by incorporating incubation in an organic solvent, oft

The Royan Public Umbilical Cord Blood Bank: Does It Cover All Ethnic Groups in Iran Based on HLA Diversity?

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) stem cells allow the transplantation of partially human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched grafts and are a valuable resource for the treatment of hematologic malignancies and heritable hematologic, immunologic and metabolic diseases, especially when a compatible bone marrow donor is unavailable. The aim of this study was to determine how many ethnic groups in Iran are covered by the available UCB units based on HLA diversity. METHODS: From 2009 until mid-2013, 4,981 (30.3%) of the 16,437 UCB samples collected met the storage criteria and were cryopreserved
