Computed Tomographic Features of Benign and Malignant External Ear Canal Neoplasms in 39 Dogs.

Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to evaluate external and middle ear disease and for surgical planning in dogs. However, there is limited literature regarding CT characteristics of benign and malignant canine external ear canal neoplasms. This retrospective, multicenter, secondary analysis, cross-sectional study compared the CT features of benign and malignant tumors in 39 dogs with 41 external ear canal masses by consensus of two veterinary radiologists. Recorded parameters were the presence of focal or multifocal tissue enlargement (mass/masses), lesion shape, location of the center

Adult-onset multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the bone marrow, lung, liver, and brain: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), a rare form of vascular neoplasm, is typically seen in children. In this paper, we report a unique case of KHE replacing bone marrow tissue mimicking myeloproliferative neoplasm with additional involvement in the lung, liver, and brain in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient was initially seen in the hematology department for the chief complaint of epigastric pain and anemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed mild splenomegaly with iron deposition secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis. Additional workup was inconclusive. Subseq

Biomarkers of Pineal Region Tumors: A Review.

Background: The pineal gland, a small, pinecone-shaped organ deep within the brain, is responsible for producing melatonin. The gland consists of pineal parenchymal cells and glial cells that can form neoplasms. Pineal region neoplasms can also arise from germ cells and adjacent structures. This review focuses on detection of serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of germ cell tumors and pineal parenchymal cell tumors, as these types comprise most neoplasms specific to the pineal region. Methods: For this review, we searched PubMed using the following keywords: biomarkers, germ cell tu

Identification in human brain tumors of DNA sequences specific for SV40 large T antigen.

Simian virus 40 (SV40) sequences have recently been identified in a variety of human neoplasms, including mesothelioma, osteosarcoma, and brain tumors, but significant discrepancies exist regarding the frequency at which this occurs. The SV40 genome is 70% homologous to JC and BK, two related polyomaviruses that are highly prevalent in humans and which may cause in immune-compromised patients progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and cystitis, respectively. We have established a specific and sensitive method to identify SV40 sequence in DNA extracted from histological sections, usin

Optimising Rehabilitation Strategies for Primary Central Nervous System Neoplasm-Related Neurological Deficits Using a Comprehensive Multimodality Approach Including Robotic Gloves Technology: A Comprehensive Case Report.

This case study examines the rehabilitation strategy for a 51-year-old farmer with primary neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS)-related hemiparesis, balance issues, and cognitive impairment. Primary neoplasm of the CNS is a rare type of cancer that affects the brain, spinal cord, and other parts of the CNS. Hemiparesis, which is weakness on one side of the body, is a common symptom of primary neoplasm of the CNS. The tumour can cause inflammation and swelling in the brain, which can further contribute to weakness. Symptoms include headaches, confusion, seizures, and changes in vision o

Spinal meningeal oligodendrogliomatosis in two boxer dogs.

Two Boxer dogs developed progressive ataxia in association with a neoplastic infiltration of the spinal leptomeninges. In the first dog, the leptomeningeal neoplasm encompassed the entire cord and the ventral aspect of the brainstem and extended bilaterally into the piriform lobes. In the second, the neoplasm surrounded the C1-C3 segments of the spinal cord and the brainstem without involvement of the brain or spinal cord parenchyma. In both dogs, the neoplastic cells had variably distinct cell borders, clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm, and a round to ovoid hyperchromatic nucleus. Neoplastic ce

Expression levels of β-catenin and galectin-3 in meningioma and their effect on brain invasion and recurrence: a tissue microarray study.

OBJECTIVE: Meningiomas are neoplasms that arise from the meninges of the central nervous system (CNS). They constitute about 25.6% of CNS tumors diagnosed in Egypt. Some morphological variants of meningiomas display aggressive behavior, leading to brain-invasive growth pattern. Although meningiomas are usually treated by complete surgical excision, the risk of postoperative recurrence remains. Hence, additional biomarkers for predicting aggressive behavior must be discovered. This study aims to explore the clinical and biological relevance of the protein expression levels of β-catenin and gale

Discrimination of brain abscess and cystic tumor by in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy was evaluated for the differentiation of brain abscesses and cystic brain tumors. Proton MR spectroscopy was performed in vivo in two patients with brain abscess and eight patients with various cystic brain tumors (anaplastic astrocytoma, glioblastoma, and metastatic brain tumor). MR imaging with contrast medium demonstrated ring-like enhanced mass lesions in all patients. The various resonance peaks in proton MR spectra were assigned to metabolites according to chemical shifts. Treatment of the cystic brain lesions was based on the information from

Giant tumefactive perivascular spaces: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular spaces are interstitial fluid-filled regions located deep to the pia mater. They play roles in lymphatic drainage and the central nervous system immunological function. When they enlarge, they are referred to as giant tumefactive perivascular spaces. Often misdiagnosed as cystic neoplasms, they require a high degree of clinical suspicion and key radiological features to be accurately diagnosed. We describe an interesting case in which a man presented with worsening headache, subsequently found on neuroimaging to have this phenomenon. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 32-year-old ma

[Isolated cervical spinal cord hemangioblastoma--case report].

Hemangioblastomas are rare tumors which account for 0.9-2.1% of central nervous system neoplasms. The most common site of hemangioblastomas is the cerebellum, while they are rarely located in spinal cord, cerebrum and brain stem. Hemangioblastomas occur as a sporadic entity, and as a manifestation of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. A 33-year old patient with isolated cervical spinal cord hemangioblastoma is presented.

Posterior dural arteriovenous malformation and medulloblastoma in an infant: case report.

A newborn is described who presented with heart failure from a posterior dural arteriovenous malformation and had a coexisting congenital medulloblastoma. There have been sporadic reports of arteriovenous malformation and brain neoplasms in older children and adults, and these have generally been glial tumors. This is the first known case of a combined congenital primitive neuroectodermal tumor and arteriovenous malformation in an infant.

Primary cerebral lymphoma manifested by dementia.

Primary cerebral lymphoma (PCL) accounts for less than 1% of intracranial neoplasms. In immunocompromised patients, multicentric lymphoma of the brain is typically manifested by focal neurologic deficits. In the immunocompetent individual, PCL involves leptomeninges and presents meningeal signs. Leptomeningeal lymphoma manifested by dementia has not been previously reported and should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

[Glioblastoma after radiotherapy of meningioma].

A cerebellar glioblastoma was discovered in a 28 year old woman, 5 years after a focal 50 grays brain irradiation for meningioma of the clivus. This case fulfilled the accepted criteria for radiation-induced neoplasms of the central nervous system, namely a second histologically-proven tumor different from the first lesion, a location within the irradiated area and a long latent period.

[Radiation-induced meningioma. 3 cases].

During the same year (1984), we have seen 3 cases of meningiomas following radiation therapy of the brain for previously diagnosed tumors. A causal relationship between irradiation and meningioma has been postulated. Nevertheless, the coincidental occurrence in same patient of two different histological lesions is possible. The neoplasms developed after irradiation are of mesenchymal origin; they are fibrosarcomas, osteogenic sarcomas and meningiomas.

Brain infections in human immunodeficiency virus positive patients.

This review discusses the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of direct human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) brain infection as well as other common opportunistic infections and neoplasms in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) population. MRI utilizing T2-weighted images is an ideal method for screening. Gadolinium (Gd) should be administered to further characterize positive or questionable studies or when meningeal disease is suspected.

[Brain tumor surgery in adults.].

Despite the advanced medical and radiation therapy, the role of surgical resection of brain neoplasms still remains indisputable. The maximal safe resection of benign brain tumors may result in complete recovery of the patient. Surgery of malignant tumors can resolve mass effect, improve the neurological condition of the patient providing the possibility for further complex oncotherapy based on molecular level histopathology results. The advances in technical and multidisciplinary environment of brain tumor surgery facilitate more radical and safer resection resulting in better outcomes and pr

Brain metastasis of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

We present an extremely infrequent case of brain metastasis of a parotid tumor. To our knowledge, this is the second case reported of a brain metastasis of a malignant parotid tumor, carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma. Pleomorphic adenoma represents 60% of tumors of the parotid gland, and although it is a benign tumor, it can transform into carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma in 5% of cases, one of the most aggressive neoplasms of the salivary glands. We want to note the need for an accurate diagnostic. Thanks to aggressive surgical management, our patient survived more than 1½ years.

Cerebral pleomorphic liposarcoma: Clinicopathologic findings.

Pleomorphic liposarcoma is the rarest subtype of liposarcoma. Involvement of the central nervous system by pleomorphic liposarcoma is exceptional. We present a 62-year-old woman with an intraparenchymal mass involving the left frontoparietal lobes. Histologic examination demonstrated a mesenchymal neoplasm with a dense reticulin network and pleomorphic lipoblasts. Immunohistochemical stain for adipophilin highlighted intracytoplasmic vacuoles. MDM2 immunostain was negative. A diagnosis of pleomorphic liposarcoma was made. There was no evidence of an extracranial primary neoplasm by imaging or

High-grade gliomas in children.

High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are malignant tumors and typically include glioblastoma multiforme and anaplastic astrocytoma subtypes. Brainstem gliomas and ependymomas are separate entities with respect to clinical presentation, treatment, prognosis, and outcome in comparison with supratentorial HGGs. In children, these tumors account for 3% to 7% of newly diagnosed brain tumors and 20% of all diagnoses of pediatric supratentorial brain tumors. These neoplasms are highly proliferative and mitotically active and of glial origin. This article reviews clinical, diagnostic, and pathologic features of
