Real-time brain-computer interface control of walking exoskeleton with bilateral sensory feedback.

PURPOSE: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a pathway to restore ambulation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, existing BCI systems for gait are unidirectional and lack sensory feedback. This study aimed to demonstrate that a bidirectional brain-computer interface (BDBCI) can simultaneously enable real-time brain-controlled walking and artificial leg sensation via electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. METHODS: Epilepsy patients undergoing bilateral interhemispheric subdural electrocorticography (ECoG) implantation were recruited for this proof-of-concept study.

Lower-Limb Motor Imagery-Based Brain-Computer Interface to Control Treadmill Velocities.

Lower-limb rehabilitation traditionally relies on physical therapy, but motor imagery(MI)-based brain- computer interfaces (BCIs) promise to facilitate neuroplasticity and adaptation by closing the perception-action cycle. Here, we present a BCI system based on kinesthetic MI that enables treadmill velocity control, establishing a closed-loop feedback mechanism. The system was tested in a healthy participant translating mu (8-12 Hz) and high-beta (18-24 Hz) rhythm modulation into treadmill velocity control commands. Feature extraction techniques, including power spectral density (PSD) and Riem

An attention-based motor imagery brain-computer interface system for lower limb exoskeletons.

Lower-limb exoskeletons have become increasingly popular in rehabilitation to help patients with disabilities regain mobility and independence. Brain-computer interface (BCI) offers a natural control method for these exoskeletons, allowing users to operate them through their electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. However, the limited EEG decoding performance of the BCI system restricts its application for lower limb exoskeletons. To address this challenge, we propose an attention-based motor imagery BCI system for lower limb exoskeletons. The decoding module of the proposed BCI system combines th

The Promise of Endovascular Neurotechnology: A Brain-Computer Interface to Restore Autonomy to People With Motor Impairment.

This Joel A. DeLisa Lecture on endovascular brain-computer interfaces was presented by Dr Thomas Oxley on February 23, 2023, at the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Scientific Meeting. The lecture described how brain-computer interfaces replace lost physiological function to enable direct communication between the brain and external digital devices, such as computers, smartphones, and robotic limbs. Specifically, the potential of a novel endovascular brain-computer interface technology was discussed. The brain-computer interface uses a stent-electrode array delivered via the jugular

A continuous pursuit dataset for online deep learning-based EEG brain-computer interface.

This dataset is from an EEG brain-computer interface (BCI) study investigating the use of deep learning (DL) for online continuous pursuit (CP) BCI. In this task, subjects use Motor Imagery (MI) to control a cursor to follow a randomly moving target, instead of a single stationary target used in other traditional BCI tasks. DL methods have recently achieved promising performance in traditional BCI tasks, but most studies investigate offline data analysis using DL algorithms. This dataset consists of ~168 hours of EEG recordings from complex CP BCI experiments, collected from 28 unique human su

Authentication with a one-dimensional CNN model using EEG-based brain-computer interface.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology uses electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to create a direct interaction between the human body and its surroundings. Motor imagery (MI) classification using EEG signals is an important application that can help a rehabilitated or motor-impaired stroke patient perform certain tasks. Robust classification of these signals is an important step toward making the use of EEG more practical in many applications and less dependent on trained professionals. Deep learning methods have produced impressive results in BCI in recent years, especially with the availab

An olfactory-based Brain-Computer Interface: electroencephalography changes during odor perception and discrimination.

Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are devices designed for establishing communication between the central nervous system and a computer. The communication can occur through different sensory modalities, and most commonly visual and auditory modalities are used. Here we propose that BCIs can be expanded by the incorporation of olfaction and discuss the potential applications of such olfactory BCIs. To substantiate this idea, we present results from two olfactory tasks: one that required attentive perception of odors without any overt report, and the second one where participants discriminated co

Introducing a brain-computer interface to facilitate intraoperative medical imaging control - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Safe and accurate execution of surgeries to date mainly rely on preoperative plans generated based on preoperative imaging. Frequent intraoperative interaction with such patient images during the intervention is needed, which is currently a cumbersome process given that such images are generally displayed on peripheral two-dimensional (2D) monitors and controlled through interface devices that are outside the sterile filed. This study proposes a new medical image control concept based on a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) that allows for hands-free and direct image manipulation witho

Electroencephalography-based endogenous brain-computer interface for online communication with a completely locked-in patient.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have demonstrated the potential to provide paralyzed individuals with new means of communication, but an electroencephalography (EEG)-based endogenous BCI has never been successfully used for communication with a patient in a completely locked-in state (CLIS). METHODS: In this study, we investigated the possibility of using an EEG-based endogenous BCI paradigm for online binary communication by a patient in CLIS. A female patient in CLIS participated in this study. She had not communicated even with her family for more than one year with complete l

A Noninvasive Brain-Computer Interface for Real-Time Speech Synthesis: The Importance of Multimodal Feedback.

We conducted a study of a motor imagery brain-computer interface (BCI) using electroencephalography to continuously control a formant frequency speech synthesizer with instantaneous auditory and visual feedback. Over a three-session training period, sixteen participants learned to control the BCI for production of three vowel sounds (/ textipa i/ [heed], / textipa A/ [hot], and / textipa u/ [who'd]) and were split into three groups: those receiving unimodal auditory feedback of synthesized speech, those receiving unimodal visual feedback of formant frequencies, and those receiving multimodal,

Ethical Considerations in Ending Exploratory Brain-Computer Interface Research Studies in Locked-in Syndrome.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a promising technology for restoring communication in individuals with locked-in syndrome (LIS). BCI technology offers a potential tool for individuals with impaired or absent means of effective communication to use brain activity to control an output device such as a computer keyboard. Exploratory studies of BCI devices for communication in people with LIS are underway. Research with individuals with LIS presents not only technological challenges, but ethical challenges as well. Whereas recent attention has been focused on ethical issues that arise at the ini

An independent brain-computer interface based on covert shifts of non-spatial visual attention.

Modulation of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) by directing gaze to targets flickering at different frequencies has been utilized in many brain-computer interface (BCI) studies. However, this paradigm may not work with patients suffering from complete locked-in syndrome or other severe motor disabilities that do not allow conscious control of gaze direction. In this paper, we present a novel, independent BCI paradigm based on covert shift of non-spatial visual selective attention. Subjects viewed a display consisting of two spatially overlapping sets of randomly positioned dots. Th

Event-related brain potential markers of visual and auditory perception: A useful tool for brain computer interface systems.

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

[Research progress on brain mechanism of brain-computer interface technology in the upper limb motor function rehabilitation in stroke patients].

Stroke causes abnormality of brain physiological function and limb motor function. Brain-computer interface (BCI) connects the patient's active consciousness to an external device, so as to enhance limb motor function. Previous studies have preliminarily confirmed the efficacy of BCI rehabilitation training in improving upper limb motor function after stroke, but the brain mechanism behind it is still unclear. This paper aims to review on the brain mechanism of upper limb motor dysfunction in stroke patients and the improvement of brain function in those receiving BCI training, aiming to furth

Brain motor system function in a patient with complete spinal cord injury following extensive brain-computer interface training.

Although several features of brain motor function appear to be preserved even in chronic complete SCI, previous functional MRI (fMRI) studies have also identified significant derangements such as a strongly reduced volume of activation, a poor modulation of function and abnormal activation patterns. It might be speculated that extensive motor imagery training may serve to prevent such abnormalities. We here report on a unique patient with a complete traumatic SCI below C5 who learned to elicit electroencephalographic signals beta-bursts in the midline region upon imagination of foot movements.

Electroencephalography-Based Brain-Computer Interface System Using Tongue Movement Imagery for Wheelchair Control.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are essential in assistive technologies to restore mobility in individuals with motor impairments. Although electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-controlled wheelchairs have been extensively studied, most tongue-controlled systems rely on physical tongue movements, intraoral devices, or limited offline commands, which reduces the usability and comfort. This study introduces an EEG-based tongue motor imagery (MI) BCI for intuitive and entirely mental wheelchair control. By leveraging preserved motor function and the cortical representation of the tongue, the

Closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback and brain-computer interface interventions for mental health: a review.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been widely explored for detecting and monitoring mental health-related states, with many existing studies focusing on identification and classification. Such approaches are primarily observational and provide limited support for intervention. Closed-loop EEG-based BCIs address this limitation by incorporating real-time feedback to observe neural activity. A key paradigm within this context is neurofeedback, in which users learn to modulate their own brain activity, with the aim of supporting improvements in mental states a

Beyond flickering: introducing code-modulated motion visual evoked potentials for brain-computer interfacing.

This study presents a novel code-modulated motion visual evoked potential (c-MVEP) paradigm for brain-computer interfacing (BCI). To avoid the visual discomfort and fatigue often associated with traditional flickering stimuli, this paradigm uses pseudo-random sequences to visually stimulate objects using motion. We conducted offline and online experiments, to investigate signal characteristics and evaluate practical feasibility, respectively. In the offline experiment, EEG data were recorded and compared during sequential stimulation of a single target under four conditions: c-MVEP, code-modul
