Embryos express several unique differentiation characteristics, including the accumulation of a number of metabolites that are generally considered to be unique to seeds. PICKLE (PKL) codes for a CHD3-chromatin remodeling factor that is necessary for repression of embryonic traits in seedlings of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. In pkl mutants, primary roots are capable of expressing many embryonic traits after germination and are referred to as "pickle roots". In an attempt to examine the breadth of PKL-dependent repression of embryo-specific differentiation pathways, we determined the extent

Cancers of the oropharyngeal tissues, oesophagus, stomach, and colorectum are amongst the most common causes of death from cancer throughout the world. Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is thought to be protective, and cruciferous vegetables are of particular interest because of their unique role as a source of biologically active glucosinolate breakdown products. A literature review of primary studies and meta-analyses indicates that higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables probably reduces the risk of colorectal and gastric cancers by approximately 8% and 19%, respectively. Cold shock domain proteins (CSDPs) participate in plant development and resistance, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrated that the CSDPs, including EsCSDP1, EsCSDP2, and EsCSDP3, from the extremophyte Eutrema salsugineum possess all basic properties of RNA chaperones. EsCSDP1-3 melt secondary structures in RNAs with various nucleotide sequences and exhibit RNA chaperone activity in vitro. EsCSDP1 and EsCSDP3 were shown to have higher RNA melting activity, whereasile EsCSDP2 had higher RNA chaperone activity. We demonstrated that higher RN

In general, the chemodiversity of phytoalexins, elicited metabolites involved in plant defense mechanisms against microbial pathogens, correlates with the biodiversity of their sources. In this work, the phytoalexins produced by four wild cruciferous species (Brassica tournefortii, Crambe abyssinica (crambe), Diplotaxis tenuifolia (sand rocket), and Diplotaxis tenuisiliqua (wall rocket)) were identified and quantified by HPLC with photodioarray and electrospray mass detectors. In addition, the production of indole glucosinolates, biosynthetic precursors of cruciferous phytoalexins, was evaluat

The floral transition, which denotes the shift from vegetative to reproductive growth, is a fundamental process in plant development that critically influences both plant reproductive success and crop yield. Photoperiod, defined as the perception of day length, acts as a crucial environmental cue regulating floral transition in numerous plant species. Thlaspi arvense L., a promising oilseed crop within the Brassicaceae family, demonstrates photoperiod-insensitive flowering in its Kunming ecotype. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, homologs of the Arabidopsis thaliana CONSTANS (CO) and FLO

Plants of the Brassicaceae family are well-known for containing the glucosinolate myrosinase system, which is able to release isothiocyanates after plant biotic and abiotic lesions. Erucin (ERU; 1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylthio)-butane), an isothiocyanate particularly abundant in arugula (Eruca sativa Mill., Eruca vesicaria L., etc.), derives from the hydrolysis of the glucosinolate glucoerucin by the enzyme myrosinase. Many other natural isothiocyanates influence cancer cells and, in particular, induce antiproliferative effects at relatively high concentrations. Similar antiproliferative effect

Parasitoid hymenopterans are highly valuable pest control agents. Despite their necessity within the agriculture industry, they remain one of the most understudied groups of insects. Non-crop habitats adjacent to farmland provide critical ecological services for these beneficial insects and can act as a corridor from uncultivated land to fields; this interaction is a form of edge effect. Here, we evaluate how 3 types of non-crop field edges affected the diversity, richness, and abundance of parasitoid hymenopterans at varying edge distances in canola (Brassica napus L.; Brassicales: Brassicace

A Gypsy LTR retrotransposon insertion in BrNYC1-A04 causes the stay-green phenotype of Chinese cabbage via bulked segregant analysis sequencing, fine-mapping, and gene silencing analysis. The stay-green trait positively influences the postharvest quality of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis), a leafy vegetable crop in the Brassicaceae family. This trait is typically caused by defects in chlorophyll degradation. In this study, we identified BraA04g008820.3C as a candidate gene associated with the stay-green phenotype in Chinese cabbage through BSA-seq and fine-mapping analyses.

Proteins and peptides belonging to the plant immune system can possess natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Due to their broad range of activity and stability, they represent promising novel alternatives to commonly used antifungal agents to fight the emergence of resistant strains. An isolation protocol was optimised to target proteins found in plants' defence system, and it was applied to white mustard (Brassica hirta) seeds. Firstly, a ∼14 kDa protein with activity against S. cerevisiae was extracted and purified; secondly, the protein was identified as the mustard Na

The progressive decline of bone mass and the deterioration of bone microarchitecture are hallmarks of the bone aging. The resulting increase in bone fragility is the leading cause of bone fractures, a major cause of disability. As the frontline pharmacological treatments for osteoporosis suffer from low patients' adherence and occasional side effects, the importance of diet regimens for the prevention of excessive bone fragility has been increasingly recognized. Indeed, certain diet components have been already associated to a reduced fracture risk. Organosulfur compounds are a broad class of

Natural sulfur compounds are emerging as therapeutic options for the management of hypertension and prehypertension. They are mainly represented by polysulfides from Alliaceae (i.e., garlic) and isothiocyanates from Brassicaceae (or crucifers). The beneficial cardiovascular effects of these compounds, especially garlic polysulfides, are well known and widely reported both in preclinical and clinical studies. However, only a few authors have linked the ability of natural sulfur compounds to induce vasorelaxation and subsequent antihypertensive effects with their ability to release hydrogen sulf

Based on structural similarities and equine administration experiments, Barbarin, 5-phenyl-2-oxazolidinethione from Brassicaceae plants, is a possible source of equine urinary identifications of aminorex, (R,S)-5-phenyl-4,5-dihydro-1,3-oxazol-2-amine, an amphetamine-related US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) controlled substance considered illegal in sport horses. We now report the synthesis and certification of d5 -barbarin to facilitate research on the relationship between plant barbarin and such aminorex identifications. D5 -barbarin synthesis commenced with production of d5 -2-oxo-2-

Rapid phenotypic changes in traits of adaptive significance are crucial for organisms to thrive in changing environments. How such phenotypic variation is achieved rapidly, despite limited genetic variation in species that experience a genetic bottleneck is unknown. Capsella rubella, an annual and inbreeding forb (Brassicaceae), is a great system for studying this basic question. Its distribution is wider than those of its congeneric species, despite an extreme genetic bottleneck event that severely diminished its genetic variation. Here, we demonstrate that transposable elements (TEs) are an

Calcium phosphate was unknown as a plant biomineral until recently reported in Neotropical Loasaceae. Here, we demonstrate its widespread occurrence in the trichomes of several plant families, including Brassicaceae. Calcium phosphate is the primary biomineral in, e.g., the bones and teeth of higher animals; in plants, it was only recently discovered in the stinging hairs and scabrid-glochidiate trichomes of South American Loasaceae (Ensikat et al. in Sci Rep UK 6:26073, 2016), where it appears to be deposited highly specifically, often replacing the common plant biomineral silica. We initiate

Nitrilases consist of a group of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of organic cyanides. They are found ubiquitously distributed in the plant kingdom. Plant nitrilases are mainly involved in the detoxification of ß-cyanoalanine, a side-product of ethylene biosynthesis. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana a second group of Brassicaceae-specific nitrilases (NIT1-3) has been found. This so-called NIT1-subfamily has been associated with the conversion of indole-3-acetonitrile (IAN) into the major plant growth hormone, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). However, apart of reported functions in defens
