Endobronchial chondroma with ossification mimicking chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial chondroma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumour, and its etiology remains not entirely understood. Due to the tumour's slow growth rate, the early stages of the disease often present with atypical or nonspecific clinical symptoms. Consequently, most cases are discovered incidentally during examinations. However, when the tumour enlarges to partially or completely obstruct the bronchus or exerts pressure on adjacent structures, patients may present with a range of respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, sputum production, chest pain, stridor, dyspnea, and hemoptysis

Colovesical fistula complicating diverticular disease: one-stage resection.

Colonic diverticular disease is common in developed countries, and its prevalence increases with age. Most affected individuals remain asymptomatic throughout their lives, and relatively few patients require surgical intervention for obstructive or inflammatory complications. Colovesical fistula is the most common type (65%) of fistula associated with colonic diverticular disease. Primary resection of sigmoid colon with colorectal anastomosis performed as a one-stage procedure is its definitive treatment and can be performed safely--as simple closure, using an omental flap, or through resectio

Primary Sjögren's syndrome: a subjective description of the disease.

Forty patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome were interviewed to clarify the onset and course of the disease. In 50% of the cases, the first subjective signs of disease were recorded at age 30 to 50 years. A large variation was, however, observed, and some patients even recalled symptoms as early as in childhood. About one third described the onset as sudden, whereas the rest described an insidious deterioration. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was the most frequent debut symptom, followed by xerostomia and weariness. Regardless of age, extreme weariness was a major problem. Pain in joints and mu

Drugs affecting clearance of middle ear secretions: a perspective for the management of otitis media with effusion.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is characterized by the production and accumulation in the middle ear of mucus secretions, whose physicochemical properties are an important feature in the etiology and treatment of the disease. Many types of pharmaceutical agents, including anti-inflammatory agents, antihistamines, antibiotics, and mucolytics, have been used in attempts to improve the clinical status of patients with OME. This study critically reviews the literature from the point of view of possible changes induced by these agents in the physicochemical properties of the secretions and hence

Over-the-counter (OTC) medications to reduce cough as an adjunct to antibiotics for acute pneumonia in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Cough is often distressing for patients with pneumonia. Accordingly they often use over-the-counter (OTC) cough medications (mucolytics or cough suppressants). These might provide relief in reducing cough severity, but suppression of the cough mechanism might impede airway clearance and cause harm. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of OTC cough medications as an adjunct to antibiotics in children and adults with pneumonia. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL 2013, Issue 12, MEDLINE (January 1966 to January week 2, 2014), OLDMEDLINE (1950 to 1965), EMBASE (1980 to January 2014)

[Abdominal splenosis: an often underdiagnosed entity].

Splenosis is defined as the heterotopic autotransplantation of splenic tissue because of a ruptured spleen due to trauma or surgery. It is a benign and incidental finding, although imaging tests may sometimes orient toward malignancy simulating renal tumors, abdominal lymphomas, endometriosis, among other. We report the case of a 42-year old male in whom a MRI was performed after a study due to abdominal pain. Multiple enlarged lymph nodes were observed in the abdomen, suggestive of lymphoproliferative disease. As an important background, splenectomy was carried out due to abdominal trauma at

Pharmacological treatments of COVID-19.

The viral infection due to the new coronavirus or coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was reported for the first time in December 2019, was named by the World Health Organization (WHO) as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV2), because of the very similar genome and also its related symptoms to SARS-CoV1. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with significant mortality, morbidity, and socioeconomic impact is considered by the WHO as a global public health emergency. Since there is no specific treatment available for SARS-CoV2 infection, and or COVID-19, several clinical and

Cost-effectiveness of routine mediastinoscopy in computed tomography- and positron emission tomography-screened patients with stage I lung cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate preoperative staging is essential for the optimal management of patients with lung cancer. An important goal of preoperative staging is to identify mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Computed tomography and positron emission tomography may identify mediastinal lymph node metastasis with sufficient sensitivity to allow omission of mediastinoscopy. This study utilizes our experience with patients with clinical stage I lung cancer to perform a decision analysis addressing whether mediastinoscopy should be performed in clinical stage I lung cancer patients staged by computed to

Comprehensive analysis of drugs to treat SARS‑CoV‑2 infection: Mechanistic insights into current COVID‑19 therapies (Review).

The major impact produced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) focused many researchers attention to find treatments that can suppress transmission or ameliorate the disease. Despite the very fast and large flow of scientific data on possible treatment solutions, none have yet demonstrated unequivocal clinical utility against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19). This work represents an exhaustive and critical review of all available data on potential treatments for COVID‑19, highlighting their mechanistic characteristics and the strategy development rationale. Current Status of COVID-19 Therapies and Drug Repositioning Applications.

The rapid and global spread of a new human coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has produced an immediate urgency to discover promising targets for the treatment of COVID-19. Drug repositioning is an attractive approach that can facilitate the drug discovery process by repurposing existing pharmaceuticals to treat illnesses other than their primary indications. Here, we review current information concerning the global health issue of COVID-19 including promising approved drugs and ongoing clinical trials for prospective treatment options. In addition, we describe computational approaches to be used in dru

Primed for global coronavirus pandemic: Emerging research and clinical outcome.

The global effort to combat and contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the recently discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is now proceeding on a war footing. The world was slow to react to the developing crisis, but once the contours of the impending calamity became evident, the different state and non-state actors have raced to put their act together. The COVID-19 pandemic has blatantly exposed the shortcomings of our healthcare system and the limitations of medical science, despite considerable advances in recent years. To effectively tack
