BACKGROUND: The Canadian Active Living Environments (Can-ALE) project was developed in 2019 to provide a standardized, pan-Canadian indicator of how supportive neighbourhood built environments are for physical activity and active transportation, enabling comparisons across places and over time. Can-ALE 1.0 produced measures for the 2006 and 2016 census years, but it did not include 2011 or 2021. As well, the data and processing steps were not packaged in a fully reproducible format, limiting longitudinal analyses and replication. In this study, the original measure was replicated and extended

Public health authorities recommend a range of nonchemical measures to control blacklegged ticks Ixodes scapularis Say, 1821 (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in residential yards. Here we enumerate these recommendations and assess their relationship to larval tick abundance in 143 yards in Dutchess County, New York, an area with high Lyme disease incidence. We examined the relationship between larval tick abundance and eight property features related to recommendations from public health agencies: presence or absence of outdoor cats, wood piles, trash, stone walls, wood chip barriers separating lawn from a

INTRODUCTION: Pedestrian safety has become a critical issue since walking is increasingly promoted as a sustainable transport mode. However, pedestrians are vulnerable to severe injury and mortality in road crashes. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that affect the safety of pedestrians. This paper investigates the impacts of street layout on the frequency of pedestrian crashes by examining the interactive pattern of built environment, crossing facilities, and road characteristics.
METHOD: A surrogate exposure variable of pedestrian crashes at the road-segment level is prop

Inter-national benchmarking of road safety, with the purpose of achieving continuous improvement by learning lessons from existing best practices, has currently been widely encouraged by most countries as an emerging management tool to improve the level of road safety. However, performing a successful road safety benchmarking practice is by no means easy. Challenges exist from ascertaining the benchmarking framework at the very beginning to making final policy decisions. In this study, based on the identification of leading road safety risk factors, a comprehensive set of hierarchically struct

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis persists throughout the human lifespan, yet declines in Alzheimer's disease and major depression, associated in part with reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. For rodents, environmental enrichment, dichotomised primarily as physical activity and spatial complexity, robustly promotes adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but no framework has translated these findings to human environments. This review is the first to synthesise evidence across the full translational pathway, arguing that spatial complexity and physically active navigation in neighbou

BACKGROUND: Jumping from a height is an uncommon but lethal means of suicide. Restricting access to means is an important universal or population-based approach to suicide prevention with clear evidence of its effectiveness. However, the evidence with respect to means restriction for the prevention of suicide by jumping is not well established.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to restrict the availability of, or access to, means of suicide by jumping. These include the use of physical barriers, fencing or safety nets at frequently-used jumping sites, or restriction o

OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage.
METHODS: Data from the Current Population Survey September 2019 Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement were linked to U.S. county-level data on (1) population-level exposure to CRZ and an index of 10 A

Pedestrians are considered the most vulnerable road users who are directly exposed to traffic crashes. With a view to addressing the growing concern of pedestrian safety, Federal and local governments aim at reducing pedestrian-involved crashes. Nevertheless, pedestrian volume data are rarely available even though they among the most important factors to identify pedestrian safety. Thus, this study aims at identifying surrogate measures for pedestrian exposure at intersections. A two-step process is implemented: the first step is the development of Tobit and generalized linear models for predi

BACKGROUND: Cycling is known to be beneficial for human health. Studies have suggested significant associations of physical activity with macroscale built environments and streetscapes. However, whether good streetscapes can amplify the benefits of a favorable built environment on physical activity remains unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether streetscape perceptions can modify the associations between accessibility, land use mix, and bike-sharing use.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 18,019,266 bike-sharing orders during weekends in Shanghai, China. A 500 × 500 m

The objective of this study was to develop crash modification factors (CMFs) for bicycle crashes for different roadway segment and intersection facility types in urban areas. The study used four years (2011-2014) of crash data from Florida to quantify the safety impacts of roadway and traffic characteristics, bicycle infrastructure, and bicycle activity data on bicycle crashes. A cross-sectional analysis using Generalized Linear Model (GLM) approach with Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZINB) distribution was adopted to develop the relevant regression models in this study. Hong Kong is a compact city with high activity and travel intensity. In the past decades, many footbridges and underpasses were installed to reduce the pedestrian-vehicle conflicts on urban roads. However, it is rare that the effects of configuration of pedestrian network on pedestrian crashes are investigated. In Hong Kong, many footbridges and underpasses are connected to major transport hubs and commercial building development and become parts of giant elevated and underground walkway systems. It is challenging to characterize such a complicated pedestrian network. In this study, a three-di

Characterized by early construction periods, as the concentration of low-income populations and a high level of aging, affordable housing communities face prominent challenges such as incongruence between age-friendly construction and the needs of the older adult population. It is urgent to provide pathways and tools for identifying age-friendly issues and optimizing the built environment. The systematic evaluation of age-friendly communities serves as the foundation for implementing intervention measures by developers. Therefore, the construction of a scientifically systematic evaluation syst

The association between built environment and physical activity has been recognized. However, how and to what extent microscale streetscapes are related to running activity remains underexplored, partly due to the lack of running data in large urban areas. Moreover, few studies have examined the interactive effects of macroscale built environment and microscale streetscapes. This study examines the main and interactive effects of the two-level environments on running intensity, using 9.73 million fitness tracker data from Keep in Shanghai, China. Results of spatial error model showed that: 1)

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to determine adult's trajectories of meeting 150 minutes per week of physical activity (PA) and assess associations between environmental features (and changes in these) with trajectory membership.
METHODS: We used data from the How Areas in Brisbane Influence HealTh and AcTivity (HABITAT) cohort study, Australia. Data on PA were assessed in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, and 2016 among individuals aged 45-60 years. At each survey, data on length of bike paths, area of parks, residential density, street connectivity, land use mix, and number of street lights were measured. PA

BACKGROUND: Built environment can influence physical conditions of older adults (e.g. osteoporosis). However, traditional methods using 2-dimensional circular buffer as a spatial structure to measure neighbourhood effect may create bias in health estimation, especially for the hilly and compact environment across low-income neighbourhoods (e.g. public housing estates).
METHODS: We evaluated the environmental influences on self-reported osteoporosis among "old residents" (age≥65) in Hong Kong (n = 2077). Twelve public housing estates across hilly neighbourhoods in Hong Kong were selected as st

Pedestrian injuries from falls are an understudied cause of morbidity. Here, we compare the burden of pedestrian injuries from falls occurring on streets and sidewalks with that from motor vehicle collisions. Data on injurious falls on streets and sidewalks, and pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions, to which Emergency Medical Services responded, along with pedestrian and incident characteristics, were identified in the 2019 National Emergency Medical Services Information System database. In total, 118,520 injurious pedestrian falls and 33,915 pedestrians-motor vehicle collisions were identified

Guardrails were designed to deter vehicle access to off-road areas and consequently prevent hitting rigid fixed objects alongside the road (e.g. trees, utility poles, traffic barriers, etc.). However, guardrails cause 10 % of deaths in vehicle-to-fixed-object crashes, which recently attracted attention in the highway safety community on the vehicle-based injury criteria used in regulations. The objectives of this study were to investigate both full-body and body-region driver injury probabilities using finite element (FE) simulations, to quantify the influence of pre-impact conditions on injur
