The molluscicidal activity of Crown of Christ (Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii) latex on snails acting as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium.

The present study describes the action of the latex of Euphorbia splendens var. hislopii (E. milli) on species of the genus Bulinus and on Biomphalaria pfeifferi, intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in Africa, and the Brazilian snails B. glabrata, B. tenagophila, and B. straminea, intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis in Brazil. The impact of the latex on the egg masses and embryos of B. glabrata was also evaluated. Using the standardized methodology of the World Health Organization for testing plant-derived molluscicides, we obtained a 90% lethal dose (LD90) ranging from 0.13 ppm for B. gla

Schistosomiasis around Siavonga, on the shores of Lake Kariba, Zambia.

A schistosomiasis prevalence survey was carried out at Lake Kariba, Zambia--only the second since the creation of the lake more than 30 years ago. In the 20 or so years since the first study the prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni has increased from 16% to 56% while that of S. haematobium has dropped from 69% to 17%. There was variability in the infectivity of contact sites (P < 0.001) and this had an impact on prevalence. In contrast, sex, age (within the range 5-19 years), residential area (distance from the lakeshore) and activity at the contact site had no significant effect on prevalence (P

Studies on schistosomiasis in Saudi Arabia.

During studies on schistosomiasis in Saudi Arabia, urine and stool samples from inhabitants of various areas (mostly rural) were examined, and 97 aquatic habitats in 46 localities were searched for snails. The results indicate the occurrence of both urinary and intestinal schistosomiasis in most parts of the country, with a patchy distribution and varying infection rates. The snail intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni was found to be Biomphalaria arabica. For S. haematobium three species of snails, namely, Bulinus truncatus and B. beccarii in the west and B. reticulatus wrighti in the nort

Prevalence and correlations of schistosomiasis mansoni and schistosomiasis haematobium among humans and intermediate snail hosts: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The control of schistosomiasis is particularly difficult in sub-Saharan Africa, which currently harbours 95% of this disease. The target population for preventive chemotherapy (PC) is expanded to all age group at risk of infection, thus increasing the demands of praziquantel (PZQ) tablets according to the new released guideline by World Health Organization. Due to the gap between available PZQ for PC and requirements, alternative approaches to assess endemicity of schistosomiasis in a community, are urgently needed for more quick and precise methods. We aimed to find out to which d

[Schistosomiasis endemic in Burkina Faso].

Burkina Faso, through the works of many teams of the OCCGE based in Bobo-Dioulasso, has signi-ficant data on several tropical endemics of which schistosomiasis. With the complementary works, it appears to be possible to establish a distribution of the schistosomiasis which reveals its importance. It will be the first stage of the planned national control program. The parasitologic data-gathering which covers the period of 1951 to 2000, used all the standard techniques. It is about Kato-Kartz and MIF for the intestinal schistosomiasis, centrifugation, filtration, serology reagent strips, macros

Predicting current habitat suitability for intermediate snail hosts of urogenital and intestinal schistosomiasis in the Lower Shire Valley floodplain of southern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Relating the geographical distribution of intermediate freshwater snail hosts (viz. vectors of schistosomes) to local environmental attributes offers value for understanding the epidemiological landscape of schistosomiasis transmission in a changing aquatic environment. Schistosomiasis-both urogenital and intestinal-causes significant human suffering, affecting approximately 240 million people globally and grouped within the neglected tropical disease (NTD) umbrella. This study addresses the following questions: 1. Where are the most suitable habitats for intermediate host snails i

Implications of Changing Temperatures on the Growth, Fecundity and Survival of Intermediate Host Snails of Schistosomiasis: A Systematic Review.

Climate change has been predicted to increase the global mean temperature and to alter the ecological interactions among organisms. These changes may play critical roles in influencing the life history traits of the intermediate hosts (IHs). This review focused on studies and disease models that evaluate the potential effect of temperature rise on the ecology of IH snails and the development of parasites within them. The main focus was on IH snails of schistosome parasites that cause schistosomiasis in humans. A literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, EBSCOhost and PubMed databases

Evaluation of environmental methods to control snails in an irrigation system in Central Morocco.

The Moroccan Ministry of Public Health has launched a programme to eliminate schistosomiasis. One of the components in this process is the control of Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host snail of Schistosoma haematobium. We evaluated three environmentally safe measures to control B. truncatus in siphon boxes, the main breeding sites for these snails in the Tessaout Amont irrigation system. The first method involved covering the siphon boxes to exclude light and reduce algal growth, the second consisted of increasing the frequency of emptying and cleaning the siphon boxes, and the third met

Preliminary schistosomiasis survey in the lower Volta River below Akosombo Dam, Ghana.

Snail surveys were carried out in Kpong Lake, in southern Ghana, and along the lower Volta River below the lake. Bulinus globosus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi were abundant in the Kpong Lake and B. truncatus and Biom . pfeifferi, especially the latter, were widespread below the lake. Urine surveys among primary school children at eight localities along the lower Volta showed Schistosoma haematobium prevalence rates of 38.8-96.2%. At Bator and Mepe , where records for an earlier survey were available for comparison, the present survey showed more than a doubling in prevalence rate in ten years: a

Biomphalaria pfeifferi infected with Schistosoma spp. in Kakamega and Bungoma counties, western Kenya confirms autochthonous transmission of intestinal schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Granular mapping conducted in Kakamega and Bungoma counties of western Kenya provided strong evidence of intestinal schistosomiasis among school-age children in this area. However, it was unclear whether the observed infections were due to active transmission. To address this gap, a follow-up malacology survey was conducted to determine the presence of snail vectors and ascertain active transmission. METHODS: Nineteen Wards with ≥10% prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni were selected from Kakamega and Bungoma counties. From these Wards, 42 primary schools with the highest prevalence

Foci of Schistosoma mansoni in Assiut province in middle Egypt.

Following detection of Schistosoma mansoni in a 12 years old boy who had both schistosomal polyposis and periportal fibrosis with hepatosplenomegaly, epidemiological studies to confirm local transmission were performed in his and 30 other villages in Assiut Governorate, Egypt. The index case's brother and 6 of 380 inhabitants of his village who provided stool specimens were infected with S. mansoni and a farmer with dysentery and hepatosplenomegaly had a positive rectal snip biopsy. All had hepatic abnormalities on ultrasound examination. Two of 221 schoolchildren in another village had mixed

Seasonal patterns in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium in Rhodesia, and its control by winter application of molluscicide.

Surveys of snails occurring at water contact points used by rural people in Rhodesia show that transmission of Schistosoma haematobium is very high during the spring and early summer seasons. Although infected snails are found in all seasons, fewest occur in winter and during the heavy rains. It is suggested that the bionomics of this parasite depends on pre-rain transmission because destruction of infected snails during winter reduces the reservoir of infection in the area and also the level of parasitaemia in local schoolchildren.

Studies on the biology of schistosomiasis with emphasis on the Senegal river basin.

The construction of the Diama dam on the Senegal river, the Manantali dam on the Bafing river, Mali and the ensuing ecological changes have led to a massive outbreak of Schistosoma mansoni in Northern Senegal, associated with high intensity of infections, due to intense transmission, and the creation of new foci of S. haematobium. Data on the vectorial capacity of Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Ndombo, near Richard Toll, Senegal are presented with sympatric and allopatric (Cameroon) S. mansoni. Comparisons are made on infectivity, cercarial production, chronobiology of cercarial emergence and lon

Epidemiological and genetic observations on human schistosomiasis in Kinshasa, Zaire.

A survey for Schistosoma intercalatum conducted in Kinshasa, Zaire, in September 1994 revealed a prevalence of 3.6% (n = 167). Three isolates of schistosomes were made by exposing Bulinus wrighti to miracidia hatched from eggs collected from 2 infected children. Characterization of the isolates by biochemical (isoenzymes of phosphoglucomutase), molecular (restriction fragment length polymorphism and randomly amplified polymorphic deoxyribonucleic acid analysis) and morphological (egg measurements) techniques confirmed the existence of an autochthonous transmission focus of S. intercalatum in K

Seasonal patterns in the transmission of Schistosoma haematobium, S. mattheei and S. mansoni in the highveld region of Zimbabwe.

The pattern of fluctuation in the population size of Bulinus globosus and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, in their infection rates with Schistosoma haematobium/S. mattheei and S. mansoni, respectively, and in the cercarial population size as monitored using hamster immersions, was elucidated in streams in the temperate highveld region of Zimbabwe over a 27-month period during 1982-1984. The results revealed that transmission of S. mansoni was erratic and unpredictable without a clearcut seasonal transmission pattern. In contrast, transmission of S. haematobium and S. mattheei exhibited a marked season

Urban transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

A cross sectional survey for Schistosoma haematobium infections was undertaken in 12 primary schools in the city of Dar es Salaam. The prevalence in the schools ranged from 5.3 to 55.1%, with an overall prevalence of 19.3%. More males (23.5%) than females (15.0%) were infected, and the highest prevalence was recorded in the 11-16 year age group. Intensity of infection was high, ranging from 12 to 96 eggs/10 ml urine in individual schools. 26% of the infected excreted more than 50 eggs/10 ml urine, and high rates of haematuria and proteinuria were observed in infected children. Introgression in Lake Malaŵi: increasing the threat of human urogenital schistosomiasis?

For the last 15 years, we have studied the relationships among cichlid snail-eating fishes, intermediate snail-host density, and the prevalence of human infection of Schistosoma haematobium in Lake Malaŵi and concluded that the increase of human infection is correlated with the decrease in snail-eating fishes in the shallow waters of the lake. We postulated that a strain of S. haematobium from other parts of Africa, which was introduced into the Cape Maclear region of Lake Malaŵi by tourists, was compatible with Bulinus nyassanus-which is a close relative of B. truncatus, and interbred with th
